  • Which Mariners are likely to be traded before July 31?

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jul 18, 2019

With the All-Star break behind us and the trade deadline just a couple weeks away, which Mariners are most likely to be traded? Most fans would like to see Félix Hernández or Kyle Seager moved but both have high salaries, have dealt with injuries this season and have produced well below expectations. These two aren't going anywhere. The Mariners do have a couple of players left that have had good seasons, low salaries and are currently healthy. Domingo Santana's outfield defense is the one blemi...

  • How are recently-traded Mariners doing?

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jul 11, 2019

Since we are at the All-Star break, it's a good time to take a look at some of the players the Mariners traded away this year. Fans are usually very critical of trading away their favorite players and are often surprised to learn how things are going with their new team. Let's start with Robinson Cano. Cano is having his worst season thus far in his major league career. His triple slash line of .240/.287/.360 (batting average/on-base percentage/slugging) are all career lows. With only four home...

  • Daniel Vogelbach is Mariners All Star representative

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jul 4, 2019

Daniel Vogelbach will be going to the baseball All Star Game for the Mariners this year. He was picked up in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on July 20, 2016 with Paul Blackburn for Jordan Pries and Mike Montgomery. This turned out to be a great trade for the Mariners as Pries never made it out of the minors and stopped pitching after the 2016 season. Montgomery currently has an ERA of 6.08 with the Cubs this year. I think it is safe to say the Mariners won a trade! Vogelbach is currently hitting...

  • A look at some Mariner prospects close to the majors

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jun 27, 2019

Since the season has gone off the rails and more trades are likely on the way, I thought it would be a good time to look at some prospects that are close to major league ready in the farm system. Justin Dunn, an AA pitcher at Arkansas, has a 5-3 record with a 3.46 ERA in 13 starts. He is averaging 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings at double AA while his walks are down to 2.8 per nine innings. Justin was part of last year's trade with the Mets and he could move up the system quickly. Evan White,...

  • Edwin Encarnación traded to Yankees for Juan Then

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jun 20, 2019

Another Mariner player was traded over the weekend. This time it was the current American League home run leader Edwin Encarnación. He was sent to the New York Yankees for minor league pitcher Juan Then. If that name sounds familiar it is because the Mariners originally drafted Juan and traded him in November of 2017 for Yankees AAA relief pitcher Nick Rumbelow. Juan, now 19 years old, has yet to pitch this season as the rookie ball league he was assigned to hasn't started yet. Apparently, his...

  • Mariners criticized over pitcher-heavy early draft

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jun 13, 2019

The Mariners took pitchers in nine of their first 11 picks in this past weeks baseball player’s draft. Overall, out of their 41 picks they took 23 pitchers. That works out to 56% of all picks in this year’s draft. The average team takes about 54% pitchers to 46% position players. If you were listening to the local sports station you may have heard them criticize taking so many pitchers so early in the draft. With the Mariners pitching staff currently giving up over six runs per game, pitching is definitely a need. Pitchers drafted, make the...

  • What to expect from the Mariners the rest of the way

    Eric Umphrey, THE TIMES|Jun 6, 2019

SEATTLE—It was fun while it lasted. After getting off to a 13-2 start to the season, the Seattle Mariners have hit a wall. They are now in last place in the American League West division after finishing May with a 7-21 record. The offense continues to hit home runs and average five runs per game. However, the pitching staff is giving up six runs per game. The starting pitching ranks 24th out of 30 teams and the bullpen ranks 28th. Expect a lot of trades from now until the July 31st trade d...
