Ten Years Ago July 21, 2011 2011 Harvest Issue: Better late than never Delayed by a cold, wet spring, growers look forward to good yields from wheat, peas, and garbanzo harvests. [Photo caption] Fear factor: Susan Hosticka of Dayton is covered by honeybees during a beekeepers’ field day at Washington State University. This “bee beard” didn’t cause her a single sting. Dayton’s Liberty Theater is bringing Buck, an award-winning documentary, to its screen this Friday. The film follows real life “horse whisperer” Buck Brannanman on his life jour...
I have shared this before. Always I get compliments to say it is the best-baked beans they’ve ever had. There are a lot of great baked bean recipes. This one is unusual as it has pineapple, onion, apple, and molasses along with the usual beans. It makes a lot and is perfect for those get-togethers for this upcoming July 4th weekend. I am also sharing the actual recipe card. Many of us remember the old typewriter. This recipe was a collection from a garden club in Spokane. Gram Yonkie l...
I needed to get out of town for a while last Saturday morning, so pointed my old RAV4 northward, with no particular place to go (thank you, Chuck Berry). My friend Leslie Cain called it "noodling," which is what I now call what Renny Russell (of On The Loose fame, Google it)) and Bill Wayne taught me to call "ramblin'" when I hung out with them during Spring Break in Penasco, New Mexico in 1969. Either way, noodling or ramblin' around the gravel roads surrounding Waitsburg never gets old for me,...
This week we lost a true friend who loved Waitsburg. Denise Edwards was described as a wonderful lady and a scooter riding, defender of all animals and children. We will miss seeing Denise at the Waitsburg Grocery in the mornings and later in the evenings chatting and laughing with her friends in front of the hardware store. Friends are planning a celebration of Denise's life to be held at Preston Park. Date and time to be announced....

LEWISTON, Ida.-In our family, saying 'Idaho is a world of its own' is a long-running joke. My sister moved to Lewiston almost four years ago and last weekend she got married at Hell's Gate State Park. We never knew how much of its own world Idaho was in until we visited the state during a pandemic. Washington has been in a four-phase reopening plan since the end of May with many counties still heavily restricted, Walla Walla County included. Idaho implemented a four-stage reopening plan, called...
Oops! Happy belated Father’s Day. I apologize, I missed the date. (Senioritus?). The title of this column was probably a fourth-grade assignment, one that I was happy to complete because my Dad was the best! I miss him and Mom, every day. He was adamant that my brother, sister and I stayed in touch with one another. Thanks to Zoom, FaceTime and Houseparty, we see each more often than when we lived in the same state. One of the COVID benefits, we can see and visit with one another without b...
In my daily work as a wine reviewer, I pay particularly close attention to the scents of a wine and the finish of the wine. The better the heads and tails, front and back if you will, the better the wine. And I’ve noticed that there’s an analogy in the dog world. The nose of the dog, and the tail of the dog, gather and relay essential information about the mind of the dog. We’ll look at the tail in a future chronicle. The nose, for most dogs (and I feel really bad for short-nosed pups like...
Any adventurer will, at one point or another in their career, find themselves turning to philosophy. On some precarious mountain peak or vast barren plane or beat-up dorm mattress, the great mysteries of the human experience beset such people like roving predators. “Why,” fretted our own intrepid adventurer, “did the airline reschedule our flight to last for fifteen hours, including two four-hour layovers? And that with an hour’s drive after we land! One would have thought that the scarcit...
I didn't add "Awesome" but it was in the title. It also had a 5-star rating. I didn't make it yet. In the comments, it mentions you could use light mayonnaise, light sour cream and turkey ham if you were watching calories. or for some who don't eat pork. The Fourth of July weekend is coming up and I think this would be a great salad for a get-together. Next week I will put in my baked bean recipe that always gets rave reviews. It makes quite a bit, using different beans, pineapple, apple, molasses, etc. But first, I need to share a disaster, mo...

Ten Years Ago July 7, 2011 [Photo caption] Alex the Clown rides atop the elephants during Thursday evening’s show of the Carson & Barnes circus on the outskirts of Dayton. When Imbert Matthee bought the Times in fall of 2009, the Dutch immigrant was as excited about owning two Main Street buildings as he was about having his own newspaper after a long career as a daily news reporter, editor and columnist. Coffee and an occasional French-syle pastry being his favorite and only breakfast, Matthee said he can’t wait for Coppei Coffee’s door to op...
I bought some local strawberries and have really been smitten by the fresh, fruity, and sweet taste. We cut them up, add a bit of sugar, and put them on whatever we can find. I recently made the rhubarb upside down cake which is even better with fresh strawberries. I think I have posted a recipe for strawberry spinach salad before but I believe this dressing is different. You could add chicken or cheese for some protein to the salad. I have poppy seeds but not sesame seeds to make this. That is...

Ten Years Ago June 30, 2011 Farmers in the Touchet Valley are predicting their harvest this year will be at least a week later than usual with fields in the Prescott and Waitsburg areas ready by the third week of July and in Dayton by early August. I'm on a roll with these old recipe cards. One of my hometown friends, Audrey, shared this one with me. She said her mom used to make it for dessert for the family. Looks like she kept the card or looks to be a cut out. I looked it up also because the card was a little hard to read. I'm putting in the new one. It differs a bit, but seems to have the same idea. If you can't read the card, and want to use those dimensions, let me know. I didn't get a chance to make this but everyone gave it great...

How have I lived this long and never heard of Ranger cookies? The Cookie Monster has nothing on me when it comes to cookies. While on one of my recent walks, I chatted with Claudia (socially distant) and the subject went to hand written recipe cards, which lead to this recipe as one of the family's favorite cookie recipes. She shared that her mom added dates, walnuts and used corn flakes instead of rice krispies. For those who have been in this area for a while, Claudia shared her mom, Hazel Pen...

Thank you for those who give me feedback on my recipes. Katheryn sent me a note on the Pecan Sandies and said she eliminated the nuts and used all butter instead of part oil and part butter and they turned out delicious. (This was in the original post. Let me know if you want that cookie recipe.) In this one I did all sorts of wrong but it still turned out great. I read the ingredients for the topping and put it together as if I didn't need the directions. Then I started putting the ingredients...
