Ten Years Ago May 26, 2011 Amidst concerns over the spread of a highly contagious equine virus in the region, Dayton Days organizers Tuesday night decided to cancel two days of Pro West rodeo this weekend. The Dayton Days parade, though horseless, will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, as will the Queen’s Coronation dinner on Friday and the Queen’s luncheon after the parade. It’s not every day Chandra Richardson and Caitlin Riley get to beat up their principal. But Andy Maheras actually welcomes their screams, kicks and punches because it’s...
Doesn't that sound yummy? OMG. There is also a recipe for just rhubarb butter and one that is similar that takes only rhubarb, strawberry, honey and chia seeds, mixed and put into the refrigerator. This would be good on pancakes, toast, those bran muffins, or ice cream. I'd pass on the ice cream but some like fruit on theirs. INGREDIENTS: 3-4 c. strawberries, remove stems 2 stalks of rhubarb (about 2 cups) 2 apples, cored and cut into chunks 1/3 c. honey 2 tsp vanilla ¼ - ½ tsp cin...

The following pictures of the recipe sent to me represent many things. First one of my best friends in Cheney shared this with me. Robyn and I got acquainted when we were both in the hospital having our second child, so that was 41 years ago. Since then we have been close friends, the kind that one may not talk with for a month, then have a long conversation as if no time had passed. The kind of friend who you can complain to, laugh, cry, share successes and vice versa. These recipe cards...

I made this a few days ago because I had some asparagus to use up, plus I had all the ingredients, except half and half, but used milk. I even had an unbaked (bought) pie crust in the freezer that needed to be used. It is quick and easy. The listed amount says it is for two pie crusts but the milk and eggs, I found, fit nicely in a large pie pan. I didn't measure or weigh the asparagus, just used what I had, which was about right. I didn't use 10 slices of bacon for this one pie, but cut a third...

Ten Years Ago May 5, 2011 It isn’t every night that the lights are on at two in the morning in Joan Helm’s home on Fourth Street. Or that her table is laden with four different kinds of scones, egg dishes and tea. Or that champagne (well, actually, sparkling cider) is chilling in the fridge for a special toast. First before I start on my recipe, I realized that I seem to be on a bread kick. I had been thinking about cinnamon rolls and had not made any for a long time. In fact, I had not used my rolling pin for a long time. It truly is a day project with making the dough, raising it, rolling it out, rerolling it with the filling, then raising it again, and finally baking it. Whew. There went Saturday, and yet another day of not cleaning, Second, when we were growing up, if Dad was not coming home for...

Ten Years Ago April 21, 2011 [Headline] Dayton Cut & Wrap expands business. Dayton business owners Jim and Connie Westergreen have big news for small ranchers in Columbia and Walla Walla counties. The couple will soon expand their meat processing operations to include a USDA-inspected butchering facility in Dayton and a second retail shop in Walla Walla. I thought with less events and gatherings for me to go to and/or volunteer, I'd get so much done around the house. Not so. I sigh and say "tomorrow." I find I can wear the same comfy clothes three days in a row, until Monday when I will once again have to put jeans on. I learned I can not blackmail, bribe, or sweet talk my hairdresser into breaking the rules-And so it goes! Making bread, for me, helps the day go by. Since it's in steps, I can start it, and while letting it rise, go do my...
