  • Teeny McMunn: My Recipe Box

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Jan 10, 2019

I really like gingerbread, molasses cookies, gingerbread cookies cut like little people, and my newest addition, which I can't believe I've reached my age and never had it before, cornbread with molasses. What a treat; but if you haven't bought molasses for a while, be prepared for a sticker shock. I'm out of molasses so I didn't get this made, but will soon. For me, it doesn't need any frosting or Cool Whip. This is a recipe I often go to when I want to make gingerbread. I am looking for any Super Bowl recipes that are especially brought out...

Accepting the donations were Waitsburg Food Bank representatives Betty Branson, Anita Baker, and Dona Jean Smith. Photo caption: Racing at Schweitzer recently were these members of the...

  • Teeny McMunn: My Recipe Box

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Jan 3, 2019

By the time the paper comes out, we will have started our new year. Do you do a traditional New Year’s Day food, like black eyed peas for good luck? Do you make a list of resolutions to follow? Start a new diet? There is a reason why magazines and newspapers advertise exercise equipment, gym memberships, energy drinks, etc. in January. I was going thru the Costco Connection, a Costco monthly magazine, and yes, all of the above was in there. I saw this healthy salad in the magazine and thought it was a good way to start the year. I like s...

  • Ribbon Jello & Cinnamon Pullaparts

    Dec 27, 2018

Ribbon Jello This recipe was shared with me by Myra Mann. This is a fun dessert or side dish. I had it at our church coffee hour and it makes you smile and feel like a kid again. I'd like to make it for when I see my grandkids again. It's simple enough, but as Myra will tell you, it's an all-day project. Not that it occupies you the whole day, but you have to wait for the Jello to set up eight times. I remember my mom once saying that a friend of hers couldn't get Jello to set up and Mom said, "how can you not make Jello." For those who have...

  • Pioneer Portraits - Dec. 20, 2018

    Dec 20, 2018

Ten Years Ago-December 25 2008 Heavy snow deposited by several consecutive weather systems that have marched across Washington State in the past week and a half caused the collapse of the Thomas Building at the corner of Coppei and Preston avenues at about 6 pm last Sunday evening. The structure, originally the location of a Potlatch Lumber Co, lumber and coal yard, was Scott Lumber Yard for years in the 1950’s, 1960’s and early 1970’s, then was home to a succession of auto parts stores and other enterprises. It appears that at that the east...

  • Sweet Potatoes with Apples

    Dec 20, 2018

I thought about reposting the Scalloped Potatoes and Ham dish I did in 2016, but thought maybe some would think I was getting lazy Everyone has their traditional Christmas dinner, usually ham or prime rib. I can't say "usually" because it only pertains to my circle of friends and family. This year I will be doing the Scalloped Potato dish because it was requested and we had a whole ham in the freezer to use. I'm sure I will need to make my dinner rolls and the green bean casserole. I was trying to think what side dish would go with whatever t...

  • Pioneer Portraits Week 41

    Teeny McMunn, the Times|Dec 13, 2018

Ten Years Ago-December 18, 2008 The recently renovated vaulted ceiling in the First Christian Church of Waitsburg was exposed or the first time in some 70 years last Saturday when congregation volunteers labored to dismantle scaffolding that permitted restoration work on the ceiling over the past six weeks. An appreciative crowd crunched through packed snow and couldn’t have agreed more with the Waitsburg School bands and choirs that, “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” The Waitsburg Schools’ Christmas...

  • Good Reads Weller Public Library Update

    the Times|Dec 13, 2018

Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield On a dark midwinter's night in an ancient inn on the river Thames, an extraordinary event takes place. The regulars are telling stories to while away the dark hours, when the door bursts open on a grievously wounded stranger. In his arms is the lifeless body of a small child. Hours later, the girl stirs, takes a breath and returns to life. Is it a miracle? Is it magic? Or can science provide an explanation? These questions have many answers, some of them...

  • M&M Monster Cookies

    Teeny McMunn, the Times|Dec 13, 2018

I am using this recipe this week in honor of someone who passed away, Rosemary Newman. This recipe was handed out at the gathering after the funeral. It touched me because I have kept and used recipes that were passed on from family members who are no longer here. I think it is a compliment to have someone remembered for what they used to make, the tradition of the favorite food you could count on when you visited. When my boys' great grandmother was in her last days, she asked me what I would l...
