  • Pesce all'Acqua Pazza (Fish in Crazy Water)

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Apr 16, 2026

We make several trips to the southern Washington coast throughout the year. From the lazy sunny days of summer to the dramatic storms of winter, there is something special about each season. My favorite time to visit is September through October, when the weather is still lovely and the post-Labor Day tourist crowds are much smaller. Last week, we were able to sneak off for a quick weekend get-away where we were met with perfect weather and a chance to satisfy our built-up seafood cravings. At t...

  • For the love of type at The Pressroom

    Sheila Hagar, The Times|Apr 2, 2026

WAITSBURG - What a dream-my grandies and their mom were arriving from Portland for a weekend visit that included Valentine's Day and a 14th birthday. They love being at our Milton-Freewater farm-ranch, officially called "The Franch." The donkeys entertain, the cows embody bovine contentment, and Grandpa gives the youngsters driving lessons on the ATV and tractor. There's plenty of room to spread out, play games, and cook meals together. But a visit over four days with two celebrations calls for...

  • Palouse Outdoors: A Timely Turkey Hunt

    Brad Trumbo, The Times|Apr 2, 2026

4:30 a.m. – I awake to the sound of crickets. "Thank God!" The classic iPhone alarm releases me from a fitful night of what felt like daggers being twisted in my lumbar spine. "Par for the course," I think, groaning as I stretch; my lower back straps begrudgingly limbering up. The concrete floor is cold beneath my feet as I shuffle toward the bathroom, flicking on the coffee pot, which Jack had thoughtfully prepped last night. 4:35 a.m. – I shuffle back to the futon and rummage through an ove...

  • Hollandaise Sauce and a Spring Eggs Benedict

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Apr 2, 2026

With the warmer days and the first flowers blooming, my mind has turned to planning some springtime entertaining. A decadent weekend brunch with friends, full of lively conversation, and hopefully a mimosa or two, is a favorite daytime option. Here, my recipe for a classic hollandaise sauce is poured over a seasonal variation of eggs benedict, featuring cured salmon and fresh asparagus in place of the Canadian bacon. Ingredients: For the Hollandaise: 4 egg yolks 1 tablespoon fresh squeezed...

  • Spring Spaghetti with Shrimp

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Mar 26, 2026

After six years of living in the Inland Northwest, there are still a few things about the other side of the state that I miss terribly. At the top of this list is access to fresh, local seafood, something I might have taken for granted at the time. Thankfully, there are many wonderful options for local and sustainable seafood that can be found flash-frozen in area grocery stores. Domestic, wild-caught shrimp, frozen raw, have become a staple in our freezer, perfect for quick weeknight dinners....

  • Palouse Outdoors: Sporting Life Vernacular

    Brad Trumbo, The Times|Mar 5, 2026

When I was a boy living in a linear neighborhood between beef cattle and silage corn fields, my best friend Sarah and I often hid among the branches of a sweeping eastern hemlock. The stately evergreen reached toward the sky with its conical shape, its low branches sprawling over the ground. Sarah and I would sit on the branches, laugh at each other's jokes, and invent silly childhood games, like creating our own language. Describing my and Sarah's unique language as nonsensical is an adult...
