Cougars have been seen more often in recent years in Columbia County. Just two weeks ago, Dayton resident Derek Katsel found one roaming through his backyard before it was taken down by a Fish & Wildlife official.

High School students from Dayton, DeSales in Walla Walla and Waitsburg competed in Tuesday's Knowledge Bowl at the WHS auditorium.

Former Seattle Supersonic Shawn Kemp signs autographs for fans at Ski Bluewood on Saturday during the resort's first Snow Hoops event aimed at promoting 3BA and exploring the possibility of starting a youth basketball camp on the mountain.

While Basketball shooters pumped in the baskets, rope jumpers on the gym balcony, including staff member Pam Conover, were doing their part to raise funds for the American Heart Association.

March 4, 1976

[Photo Caption] Outstanding Rebounder Kirk Huwe goes up high in the air for one of his final high school grabs as the time was running out for the Cards in this first tournament game at Pullman. Kirk scored 25 points in the effort against the Pomeroy Pirates who ultimately fell to the perennial Bulldog tournament winners.

March 9, 1951

Fred Rankin and Bob Collins have won the honors as valedictorian and salutatorian respectively of the 1951 graduating class of Waitsburg High School.

Vaughn Hubbard, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Will Hubbard of Dayton, is the new law partner of Attorney L.A. Dyar.

At a one-o'clock ceremony on Sunday afternoon, Mrs. Gladys Williamson and Glen Howard were united in marriage at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. A. M. Jensen, in Walla Walla.

In a soft glow of candlelight and amid a setting of spring flowers, Miss Melvine (Betty) Weir became the bride of Paul H. Broeckel on March 3.

March 12, 1926

Life is a grindstone and whether it grinds a person down or polishes him up depends entirely upon the stuff he's made of.

J.E. Foster of this locality, won first prize in an old fiddlers contest which was held in Lewiston, Idaho last Saturday evening.

Harvey Mills is building a garage. Looks as though he might be thinking of baiting it with some nice oil and gasoline in an effort to catch himself a car of some kind.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

March 15, 1901

The fifteen acres just south of this city formerly known as the driving park, is being plowed this week. The ground will be sown to grass and several hundred shade trees will be planted. It will be but a few years now until this city may boast of a handsome park.

George Sims and Robert Denney had a desperate encounter with a yearling bull the other day. It threw George violently to the ground, trampled on him and snorted in his face. Robert made his escape by scaling a nearby fence.
