    Imbert Matthee, The Times|May 5, 2011

WALLA WALLA - When Duane Wollmuth travels to Anaheim, Calif., later this month, it won't be to get a break from Southeast Washington's cold and rainy spring. Wollmuth and two other members of a new partnership will go down there to sell businesses from around the country on a different weather feature prevalent in this corner of the state, or at least the industry that takes advantage of its energy: wind. Attending the American Wind Energy Association 2011 Wind Expo is one for the first...

Ten Years Ago May 3, 2000 Farewell to a good and faithful servant-a photo essay tribute to the elevator at the Waits Mill. Built in the 1870s, a final record of the structure before it meets the wrecking ball, for the part it played in our town's history was not trivial and is worth being remembered. Waitsburg's American Legion Post No. 38 hosted the 12th District Spring Celebration at Ye Towne Hall. Nichole and Rhonda Eastwood proudly display the medals they won in the 2001 Special Olympics Regional Finals held in Spokane. The girls are the da...

In high school, Shannon played volleyball in Waitsburg, couldn't get enough of softball, and she was a cheerleader. Her friends enjoyed her carefree, loving personality and huge smile. This week I visited my old friend and associate Chef/ Organic Activist Jesse Cool. Back in the early '90s, Jesse asked me to take her place as Executive Chef at her popular Flea Street Café in Menlo Park, California, while she wrote her first cookbook titled, "Tomatoes." Today, with five cookbooks and three restaurants to her credit, she invites me to dinner and picks my brain for cutesy titles for future recipes. This time however, I can't spit any off-the-cuff ideas to her because I have a cookbook on a publisher's table, and rules state it's...

Longtime elementary teacher Margie Douglas, together with her late husband Dee, came up with an idea - chess and checkers tournaments. "Thus giving the students an alternative to going out in the cold weather," Douglas said. "They have so much fun. Every year...

Once again the wineries of our region are preparing for May 6, spring release weekend. To ready myself for this year's downtown party, I went to the wineries a little early to quench my fascination for food-friendly red wine, and ended up at Walla Walla's Morrison Lane Winery, tasting and visiting with winemaker Dan Morrison. Yes, Dan makes many styles of good red and white wines, but my favorite, the Morrison Lane '04 Nebbiolo, is a fantastic red wine suited for foods drenched in tomato or brown -sugared barbecue sauce. It's true, no one...
