I t's raining again, so what's new? Okay, it's good for the garden and the farmers and the wild things that fly and creep, but sometimes you just want to feel free of an umbrella. Am I the only person in the Touchet Valley who wants spring to be here now!? Funny I ask that. My cousin Betty called. She's getting a divorce. What does that have to do with spring? Nothing, but after that call, instead of moping about spring, I began to feel utterly sorry for the Betty and Bart calamity. Bart called me right after Betty; to say neither he nor Betty...

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Apr 7, 2011

DAYTON - It's a bird! It's a plane! Nohellip;it's "the world's first destination eco-food processing park." That's how Port of Columbia Manager Jennie Dickinson and consultants Dennis Miller and Gary White describe the project. But what does that really mean? The Kennewick men came up with the idea for the Blue Mountain Station in 2007, and they continue to attend national and organic food processing trade shows around the country trying to drum up enthusiasm among developers who might want to...

We want to give a BIG thank you to the tree-cutting crew who came through town to trim trees for the power company. Their representative alerted us that they were coming, spent a lot of time discussing which branches were the problem and followed up on the day of the work. They made good on all promises, cut what needed to be cut, did not just whack away and take an entire branch. All in all, a very professional job, very well done. Paul & Karen Gregutt Waitsburg...

On Saturday, I headed out to Wally World; I had an appointment with two Walla Walla Sweet Onion growers. When I arrived, we walked the land. I asked questions and they answered them. It was all simpatico, until an unexpected gust of wind blew our hats off our heads. I ran after my leather fedora and the guys after their baseball caps. As we ran and jumped between rows of baby Sweet Onions, I lost a boot, sucked right off my foot by an angry furrow. One farmer held me up while the other fought to put my boot back on. I know we looked ridiculous...

He's pleased some members of his new team bring many years of law enforcement experience they can use to offer in-house training to his deputies. I went grocery shopping today. I unloaded the four canvas bags, took off my shoes and sat down to balance my check book. Though I'd heard the cashier say the number, as I wrote the check it really hurt to see $77 missing from my checkbook register for just a couple of chickens, two steaks for Wine Guy, some vegetables, bread, bacon, cheese and eggs. Sunday morning, CNN news said we'd be seeing a 14 percent hike in food costs this summer. The reason for higher prices could be weather conditions and transportation, but a lot has to do with...

WAITS- BURG - Bette Burgoyne's idea of doing a drawing 11 inches wide and 10 feet long had several sources of inspiration. There was M.C. Escher's "Metamorphosis," the mindbending left-to-right journey of a crossword like text that changes into blocks, lizards, a beehive, fish, a flock of birds, a mountain town, a chess game and finally back to a text. There were the Chinese landscape paintings that unroll from top to bottom and are so long they could only be displayed in a very high stairwell....
