  • D-W girls come from behind to nab second league victory

    Dave Schreindl, the Times|Jan 30, 2020

Early into the contest the Patriots rushed out to a 7-2 lead and one of the D-W's top two scorers, freshman forward Claudia Benavides, fell hard to floor two and half minutes into the game with an apparent twisted ankle. Without their offensive threat and defensive presence in the middle, Liberty Christian made it 19-10 midway through the second quarter. However, a healthy Benavides returned just before Head Coach Tamira Culley called a full time out, and that was the beginning of things...

  • Prescott Boys defeat Touchet, but lose to Oakesdale

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jan 30, 2020

PRESCOTT—Prescott played in back-to-back conference games over the weekend with mixed results. At home against Touchet they had a dominating performance with all five seniors (Omar Velazco, Victor Garcia, Jonathan Cardenas, Miguel Ayala and Andrew Patzkowski) scoring. #12 Jonathan Cardenas had an excellent all-around game making 12-15 of his shots from the field, good for twenty-seven points. On the defensive end he contributed eleven steals. The Oakesdale game was as bad as the Touchet game was good. Absolutely no shots seemed to fall for P...

  • Pettichord's buzzer beater wins it 43-40

    Dave Schreindl, the Times|Jan 30, 2020

POMEROY-Dayton-Waitsburg held a 20-point advantage at the intermission, with a score of 28-8, however a pesky Pirate team led by 6-foot-2 sophomore guard Trent Gwinn, battled all the way back to tie the score at 40 on his three-pointer following a Pomeroy timeout that left 5.5 seconds on the clock. With the game tied, junior Colton VanBlaricom inbounded the ball with a pass with five seconds left, to junior Sean Evans who then passed it up to a streaking Pettichord, who launched a prayer over...

  • Walla Walla girls down rival Richland, 61-41

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jan 30, 2020

WALLA WALLA-The Walla Walla girls varsity basketball team hosted rival Richland Bombers in a conference game Friday January 24th. The opening quarter had several lead changes. #22 Emmalyn Ogden hit an open jump shot in the early going to retake the lead for Walla Walla 7-6. Richland would answer on the very next play to take the lead 8-7. #23 Rian Clear would take it right back with a jump shot in the lane making the score 9-8. Richland was distributing the ball well as four different players...

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jan 30, 2020

  • Prescott Boys Team wins 5th straight over Colton, 65-51

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jan 23, 2020

PRESCOTT-Prescott High School boys basketball played Colton High School Friday the 17th in a home conference game. Coming into this game Prescott had won four straight games to start the New Year. Three of those four included conference wins over Oakesdale, Pomeroy and St. John. Normally the top four teams in the conference advance to the playoffs. If that is the case again this year, then Prescott is in excellent position to advance to the playoffs with six games left in the regular season....

  • Defense and heart lead to first D-W girls victory of season

    Dave Schreindl, the Times|Jan 23, 2020

Turnabout is fair play. It only seemed right Thursday night that the Dayton-Waitsburg girls basketball picked up its first victory of the season over visiting Walla Walla Valley Academy, 52-33, because last week in College Place, WWVA earned its first win of the season over visiting D-W, 47-34. After their last meeting and D-W’s last game, it was hard to gauge what the outcome might be. But after WWVA nabbed the opening tip and then promptly turned the ball over that’s when the first glimmer of hope at a first victory appeared. One of WWV...

  • Walla Walla boys cruise to easy win over Pasco, 78-43

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jan 23, 2020

WALLA WALLA-The Walla Walla boys varsity basketball team hosted the Pasco Bulldogs in a conference game Tuesday January 14th. Pasco opened the game with a very slow-paced offense that included lots of passing. For the first couple of minutes of the first quarter there was no score. The first play of note was a blocked shot by #10 Michael Cornia. He had at least four blocked shots in the game. #24 Jacob Coram opened the scoring for Wa-Hi with two three-pointers. A great pass from #12 Dillion...

  • Walla Walla girls come back to win over Pasco, 61-50

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jan 23, 2020

WALLA WALLA-The Walla Walla girls basketball team hosted the Pasco Bulldogs Tuesday January 14th in a conference game. They lost their previous matchup this season in Pasco on December 14th. Tuesday's game didn't begin well for Wa-Hi as they quickly went down 8-0. #34 Mia Huxoll scored the first points for Wa-Hi with a three-point play. Unfortunately, those would be Wa-Hi's only points in the first quarter. Pasco would answer with three of their own points ending the quarter at 11-3. The second...

  • Dayton-Waitsburg boys basketball game ends with a loss to White Swan

    Dave Schreindl, the Times|Jan 16, 2020

The Dayton-Waitsburg's boys basketball team took a step closer to picking up its first league win in a 51-37 loss that was a low scoring battle against the visiting White Swan boys on Saturday night. After a tough road loss on Tuesday, D-W worked harder and better as a team, as Head Coach Roy Ramirez was heard saying from the sideline," it was right there," referring to the just missed baskets. It was also evident that he saw the progress of the team as well and continued to encourage his...

  • A unified D-W girls team show determination in White Swan matchup

    Dave Schreindl, the Times|Jan 16, 2020

Saturday night felt like the Dayton-Waitsburg girls basketball team took a big leap forward despite a setback to the visiting White Swan Cougars 64-39. Oftentimes this season things have gotten away from D-W early, Saturday was different. The team stayed close for the entire first half after a 9-6 deficit after one quarter they were still in it at the intermission 20-15. One of the huge differences was the existence of a defined team unity. "Our team has come a long way and we will continue to...

  • Prescott boys basketball win over Wilson Creek, 45-20

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jan 16, 2020

LACROSSE-Prescott traveled to LaCrosse High School to host Wilson Creek January 7th in a non conference game. Wilson Creek and Mary Walker are two teams from the Spokane area Prescott plays in LaCrosse. LaCrosse acts as a midway point to reduce travel distances for both schools. Prescott dominated from the opening tip off and quickly built a big lead. #12 Jonathan Cardenas made a great pass to an open #3 Victor Garcia for a layup. Moments later #11 Antonio Hernandez completed the three-point...

  • D-W boys basketball lose to Walla Walla Valley Academy in league matchup

    Dave Schreindl, the Times|Jan 16, 2020

COLLEGE PLACE—The script of the Dayton-Waitsburg boys basketball team played out almost identically to their female counterparts against Walla Walla Valley Academy in a league loss last Tuesday 67-32, only there were more 3-pointers involved. In the Eastern Washington Athletic Conference contest D-W got off to a slow start with its first bucket coming from Junior guard Mason Finney three minutes into the contest. Finney would score five more of his team leading 13 points in the first quarter as the team finished only two points behind the Knigh...

  • Walla Walla boys basketball trounces Hermiston, 86-49

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jan 16, 2020

WALLA WALLA—The Walla Walla Boys Varsity basketball team hosted the Hermiston Bulldogs in a conference game Saturday January 10th. Hermiston opened up the game on fire making their first five shots in a row (which included 3 three-pointers) to take a 13-8 lead. The Bulldogs first two misses of any kind came at the free throw line, missing both free throws following the first shooting foul of the game. From that point on they came back to earth as the Walla Walla Blue Devils went on a 14-3 run for the remainder of the first quarter. The most i...

  • Walla Walla defeats Kamiakin, 63-53

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jan 9, 2020

WALLA WALLA-The Walla Walla Boys Varsity basketball team hosted the Kamiakin Braves in a conference game on Saturday January 4th. #2 Dylan Ashbeck opened the scoring for Walla Walla. A few possessions later, #10 Michael Cornia had a nice block in the paint on defense. Ashbeck was active on the boards and scoring from all over the floor with 10 points on hot shooting in the 1st quarter. Walla Walla led at the end of the quarter 16-12. In the 2nd quarter, Kamiakin would cut the lead to one point a...

  • Dayton-Waitsburg basketball boys lose to DeSales in league matchup

    Dave Schreindl, the Times|Jan 9, 2020

Dayton-Waitsburg's boys basketball team came out firing with two three-pointers and a quick lead but in the end D-W couldn't maintain the wild, fast, and physical play from DeSales in the league loss 63-40. Sophomore shooting guard Dylan Bledsoe, sporting a new haircut, scored D-W's first six points. He would finish with only eight for the game. Junior guard Mason Finney scored the teams other five points of the first quarter with a great shot off an inbounds pass and then with 45 seconds left...

  • Inside the matchup: Seahawks vs. Green Bay Packers

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jan 9, 2020

With the win this week over the Philadelphia Eagles, the Seahawks season continues. Minnesota's upset win over the New Orleans Saints also helped. Going into the playoffs, the top two seeds are the #1 seed 49ers and #2 seed Green Bay Packers. The Seahawks are the #5 seed and the Vikings are the #6 seed. Because the NFL reseeds teams after the first round, that means Seattle will be playing in Green Bay next weekend instead of San Francisco. Though it is not likely, it also sets up a possibility...

  • Prescott boys basketball win over Oakesdale, 43-37

    Eric Umphrey, the Times|Jan 9, 2020

PRESCOTT-Prescott hosted Oakesdale Saturday January 4th in an early afternoon conference game. The crowd size was smaller than usual, likely due to the holiday break and 4 p.m. start time. The first quarter belonged to #12 Jonathan Cardenas. He opened the scoring in the first quarter with a jump shot then put on a show hitting three pointers. His first was an open shot that barely moved the net. On his next three, he was well-guarded and the shot was contested by Oakesdale but it didn't matter....

  • Dayton-Waitsburg girls basketball lose to Stanfield

    Dave Schreindl, The Times|Jan 2, 2020

MILTON-FREEWATER-Dayton-Waitsburg's girls basketball team came so close to flipping on a switch and getting their first win of the season at the Mac-Hi Christmas tournament. Instead they dropped a 38-30 non-league contest to Stanfield. D-W played even with the Tigers for three quarters, it was the opening period's 14-7 and subsequently the seven-point deficit that they could never quite overcome. Dayton-Waitsburg was also bit by the turnover bug as they had 10 more turnovers than Stanfield...

  • Dayton-Waitsburg boys basketball lose close game to Stanfield at Christmas tournament

    Dave Schreindl, The Times|Jan 2, 2020

MILTON-FREEWATER-Oh so close. Junior Mason Finney's shot from the top of the arc bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded for a heart-breaking loss, 53-52, Saturday afternoon to Stanfield at the Mac-Hi Christmas Tournament. It hurt even more for the once again shorthanded squad because they held a 44-37 advantage with seven minutes to go in the game. They had a 50-49 lead with 1:35 left and it was tied up at 52 after two free throws by Junior Wyatt Costello with 19 seconds left after D-W had...

  • Inside the matchup: Seattle Seahawks vs. Philadelphia Eagles

    Eric Umphrey, The Times|Jan 2, 2020

Okay admit it, you’re still not quite sure what happened against San Francisco last week. The first half had you wondering how bad the final score would look. Then Marshawn Lynch dove into the end zone and you started to believe in the team again. In the final seconds it looked like Seattle was going to pull off an upset at home and win the division title. Instead, Seattle fans now have to navigate the NFL playoffs as a #5 seed. Yes, a #5 seed has won the Super Bowl before. It happened back in 2007 when the #5 seeded New York Giants beat an u...
