WAITSBURG - Safety Always Matters is a fire and life safety program developed by the City of Walla Walla Fire Department to teach elementary school students how to respond to emergencies. Presentations are in collaboration with local fire departments and school districts.
On September 23, members of the College Place and Walla Walla Fire Departments, and Walla Walla Fire District #4 presented the S.A.M. program to the Waitsburg Elementary School.
"Not only do the kids love interacting with the firefighters, but they are learning invaluable skills that could help save their lives or the lives of their family members during a fire emergency. We have actual success stories of kids that have been through the S.A.M. program that have used the skills they learned to save themselves and others," said Jason Strang. Strang is an inspector/fire plans reviewer with the City of Walla Walla, Fire Department, Station 2.
Kindergarteners learn how to stop, drop, and roll, crawl under smoke, and the dangers of playing with lighters or matches. They learn to recognize home smoke detector alarms, recite their addresses, and how to dial 911 on cell phones.
First graders continue skill training by identifying emergencies and when to call 911. Students practice evacuating a house after hearing a smoke alarm in the E.D.I.T.H. trailer.
Second graders build on previous years' lessons by creating exit plans for their homes, ensuring every room has at least two exits. They practice this skill in the E.D.I.T.H. trailer.
Third graders learn to be home fire inspectors by looking for things that could cause a fire in their own homes.
Fourth graders are instructed in the use of fire extinguishers, the meaning of the fire triangle, and how to differentiate types of fires.
Fifth graders review previous training and add emergency preparedness for both natural and man-made disasters. This includes finding suitable shelter, access to clean water, food, and maintaining infection control.
