DAYTON — It’s showtime as “A Christmas Carol” opens this weekend. This year’s production is a true family affair with 15 sets of family members participating as cast, crew, directors, and musicians. There are husbands and wives, parents and kids, cousins. Two families are complete with both parents and all their children on stage. This adds to the story in “A Christmas Carol,” which shows how a family can persevere through struggle and hardship to come together in the ultimate gift of love.
This year’s Liberty Theater presentation of “A Christmas Carol” combines two beloved stories: one of the same title, published by Charles Dickens in 1843, and the short story “The Gift of the Magi,” published by O. Henry in 1905. Woven together, these two beautiful stories become one tale, in which the hard-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge is confronted with the choice between a self-imposed hell and a redeeming, selfless love. The strength of charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence is the focus of this reimagined stage play written by Mike Ferrians and Brenda Henderson, who also collaborated to create new music and lyrics. During Christmas Kickoff, The Liberty Theater will show “ELF” on Friday, November 28 at 3 p.m. This fun Christmas movie will be shown free to the public. A human baby raised as an elf. A city where no one remembers the true meaning of Christmas. Will Ferrell (Old School) stars as Buddy, a baby raised in the North Pole by one of Santa’s elves. Rated PG for some mild rude humor and language and has a runtime of 97 minutes.
