    Feb 8, 2018

Ten Years Ago February 14, 2008 A desire to reconnect with Waitsburg, make a significant local investment in Waitsburg’s economic development and be close to family – no doubt – are what prompted Travis and Deb Larsen to become owners of the Whetstone Public House on Preston Avenue in Waitsburg. Former mayor and city councilman Marty Dunn was appointed to fill a vacant seat on the Waitsburg City Council. The seat was held by Jim Helm, who died in early December, 2007. Dunn has served as mayor and as a council man. He also served on the Plann...

What’s the deal with Grandma Mazur’s latest online para...

  • Cookie Monster's Cookie Dough

    Feb 8, 2018

This recipe comes from Big Birds Busy Book, which came out in the ‘70’s and the same time my 2 young sons watched Sesame Street. I have made this recipe numerous times and it’s my “go to” sugar cookie recipe. The dough is soft, rich, and sweet. Some sugar cookies are crisp, but not this one. I am currently making heart shaped cookies to freeze for Valentine’s Day. I am doubling the recipe so that I can make and send them to those same sons, a tradition not to be broken INGREDIENTS: ¾ cup margarine or butter—that’s a stick and half 1 cup sug...

    Feb 1, 2018

Ten Years Ago February 7, 2008 Administrations at Waitsburg and Prescott school districts will now delve into the “nuts and bolts, the nitty-gritty” of combining middle and high school athletics between the two schools following approval by the Waitsburg Schools Board of Directors last week. Prescott’s Board unanimously approved the idea on January 24. In the final game on Kison Court, Cardinals senior John Gertsch scorched the nets with seven treys and 25 points to lead the Waitsburg Cardinals to a 73-54 win over the Dayton Bulldogs. The w...

  • Strange But True

    Samantha Weaver, The Times|Feb 1, 2018

    * It was Italian novelist, philosopher and university professor Umberto Eco who made the following sage observation: “Fear prophets and those prepared to die for the truth, for as a rule they make many others die with them, often before them, at times instead of them.” * The average (presumably non-bearded) man will shave at least 20,000 times over the course of his lifetime. * Although it is a dog, the dhole, which is native to Asia, doesn’t bark; to communicate with other members of its pack, it whistles. Evidently, that high-pitched sound ca...

    The History Channel, The Times|Feb 1, 2018

    * On Feb. 7, 1914, the silent film “Kid Auto Races at Venice” premieres featuring the actor Charlie Chaplin in his first screen appearance as the “Little Tramp.” * On Feb. 9, 1942, the Normandie, the first major liner to cross the Atlantic in less than four days, burns and sinks in New York Harbor during its conversion to an Allied troop transport. A welder set fire to life preservers, and by early the next morning the ship lay smoking and capsized in the harbor. * On Feb. 6, 1952, King George VI of Great Britain and Northern Ireland dies. P...

  • TEENY MCMUNN: MY RECIPE BOX

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Feb 1, 2018

A Mediterranean salad made with chickpeas, black beans, lots of fresh herbs and lemon juice. I saw a piece of paper in the fax, and 99.9% of the time it is insurance advertisement or wonderful trips for unbelievable prices. I was surprised to see this recipe. I'm not sure if someone faxed it to me, because it came with no note, but I took it as a sign that it needed to go in this week. For several reasons. It is listed as a gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan side, salad, or dip option to serve at Super Bowl. The other reason is I didn't have...

  • Now Here's a Tip

    JoAnn Derson, The Times|Feb 1, 2018

    * If your dryer is taking a long time to run its cycle and the clothes STILL aren’t dry, check your lint trap. Follow the hose all the way to the end, and be sure to check the grate that is in place where the hose exits an exterior wall. Lint can build up here, making it hard for heat and steam to escape. It’s also a fire hazard. * “In our house, we use nail polish to distinguish whose plastic leftover containers are whose. My roommate and I both bought the same set (a good deal!), and we painted a little X on the bottom and on the top of the l...

    The Times|Jan 25, 2018

Ten Years Ago January 31, 2007 Breaking with a decades-long tradition, the Board of Directors of the Waitsburg Commercial Club voted unanimously to forgo sponsorship of a caucus for the 2008 City of Waitsburg at a special meeting on January 24. The caucus system was instituted by Commercial Club to put forth a slate of candidates in times of tepid interest among the citizenry. While Caris Cole, Shawny Ingle and Felicia Brown scored in the double figures to power the Lady Cardinals into contention against the Asotin Panthers, it was timely...

  • Strange But True

    Samantha Weaver, The Times|Jan 25, 2018

    * Those who make the finest wigs from human hair typically avoid buying hair from Americans. Evidently, hair grown in the United States is more likely to have damage caused by hairspray, hairdryers, dyes and pollutants. * You might be surprised to learn that the tiny nation of the Netherlands, located barely 1,000 miles from the Arctic Circle, is the world leader in yield for tomato production, producing 144,352 tons of tomatoes per square mile under cultivation. * In 1900, a prairie dog colony was found in Texas. That’s not surprising -- p...

  • TEENY MCMUNN: MY RECIPE BOX

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Jan 25, 2018

While putting away a recipe booklet, I noticed a recipe with sweet potatoes, pecans and blue cheese, and thought, 'what an interesting combination.' I had all the ingredients except the blue cheese so picked that up. I had yams instead of sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes will add a lot of color to your plate, unlike my picture. I thought the recipe might be complicated, but it isn't. First step, put the potatoes and onions in the oven, and while that is baking, sugar the pecans and cool, then put...

Ten Years Ago January 24, 2008 Following four think-on-your-feet interviews and a short executive session, three members of the Waitsburg City Council couldn’t agree on a replacement appointee for the Council seat made vacant by the death of Councilman Jim Helm. Candidates Marty Dunn, Mark Shively, Sarah Groffman and Karen Gregutt will have to tap dance their way through another audition on February 6. The congregation of the First Christian Church of Waitsburg substantially voted approval of a $131,000 sanctuary renovation project, Pastor M...

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Jan. 25, 1905, at the Premier Mine in South Africa, the largest diamond ever found is discovered. The 3,106-carat “Cullinan” weighed 1.33 pounds. Stonecutter Joseph Asscher studied the stone for six months before attempting the cut. Afterward, he fainted from nervous exhaustion. * On Jan. 24, 1935, canned beer makes its debut as the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company delivers 2,000 cans of its beer. • TEENY MCMUNN: MY RECIPE BOX

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Jan 18, 2018

Dorothy Dean---Does that name sound familiar? When I was somewhat newly-married and had a young family, the Spokesman Review featured recipes from Dorothy Dean. They sent out pages that used the alphabet as their organizer. Every letter had an index of recipes, organized as to which collection it was-Cookies, Candies, Salads, Meat, etc, with specials like Baby Shower recipes. So it would be A-1, A-2, etc. I don't think I have all but I'm sure I have 80% of them. I can't remember if there was a cost or simply a sign up to receive these pages,...

  • Strange But True

    Samantha Weaver|Jan 18, 2018

    * You’ve probably been to a restaurant with a dessert called Death by Chocolate, but the real-life event is less appetizing. After falling into a vat of boiling chocolate in New Jersey, a man died before his co-workers were able to pull him out. * It’s not known why there’s a New Jersey law banning the sale of cabbage on Sunday. * The first Band-Aid brand bandage didn’t exactly look like the Band-Aids we’re familiar with today. For instance, it was 3 inches wide and 18 inches long. A bit of overkill for a scraped elbow, I imagine. * At weddin...

    * January Sales Items: Get great deals on leftover holiday decorations and cards, appliances and furniture, as well as linens, towels and other “white sale” items. * Keep a few fabric-softener sheets in the linen closet. It will keep the towels smelling fresh. If you have lots of extra bedsheets, it keeps them fresh-smelling, too. * “Whenever I have a casserole pan that has baked-on, hard-to-remove bits left behind, I fill it with water, add a little dish soap and stick it back in the warm oven. I let it sit for several hours -- even overn...

Ten Years Ago January 17, 2008 Jack Cyr, Mr. Recycling around Waitsburg, will cease recycling newspaper and cardboard as of April 1, 2008, blaming high gas prices. Cyr informed The Times through a Letter to the Editor. “They say we’re going to have $4 gas by summertime,” Cyr said this week. The 82-year-old’s route is usually from Waitsburg, where he picks up cardboard at the blue box near the Waitsburg City Shop and other locations, through Dixie and to various stops along the way into Walla Walla. One of Waitsburg’s most notable landmarks...
