  • Best Christmas tree(s) ever

    Lane Gwinn, The Times|Dec 10, 2020

Growing up, my family loved to find ways to make our Christmas trees unique. Not always successfully or safely. In the sixties, my mother turned one tree into Pop Art bordering on Psychedelic Art. Brightly colored giant paper flowers in orange, pink, and lime green, love beads, and loads of lights covered the tree. It was so mod, reminding us of the 'Joke Wall' on T.V.'s Laugh-In (look it up). We were so excited to plug in the lights and enjoy its grooviness. It took less than four minutes for...

  • Holiday memories

    Michele Smith, The Times|Dec 10, 2020

I am an eastern Oregon gal and my most precious holiday memories are the times spent at my grandparents’ homes in the farming community of Keating, east of Baker City. In the 1960s, we didn’t have many real toys to play with. What was lacking in material wealth was made up for by using our imagination. Playing “store” with my brother, Jim, in my grandmother’s country store on Hwy. 86, and looking for Easter eggs my uncle hid in a haystack on Easter Sunday, are two of my favorite memories....

  • Tree of Memories

    Mike Ferrians, The Times|Dec 10, 2020

Like many Christmas trees, ours is a time-measuring tree. We have so many ornaments now, there are too many for one tree to hold! We have a couple of small table trees that help out, but when you choose which ornaments will be hung, you’re choosing which will not. Some of our ornaments have been gifts from many friends over time. One is the cup of hot chocolate, knitted by our friend Joan Helm. Some we have given to ourselves during the years. We have one cut from wood that says, “Peace on Ear...

  • Ringing in Christmas with a bang

    Brianna Wray, The Times|Dec 10, 2020

My most memorable holiday happens to be a Christmas when I was just old enough to sleep on the top bunk. Being the youngest, I wasn’t alive during the fabled Christmas when my older brothers peeked, found presents hidden, and my parents returned everything to the North Pole to prove a point! I don’t mean to imply that I was a good kid by any means, but the idea to go snooping for hidden presents would never even have occurred to me. Nonetheless, I was a party to the wisdom gained from that yea...

  • Lacking labels, but not laughter

    Beka Compton|Dec 10, 2020

Christmas has changed a lot since I was a kid. Our gatherings have gotten smaller, our menus have changed drastically, and our gifting has gotten more strategic. One thing, however, has remained constant: My mom has yet to find a way to label her magazine-worthy wrapped gifts so she can remember who gets what, and it has become one of the most looked-forward-to parts of the holiday. It’s not for a lack of trying: She’s tried using color-coded wrapping paper, which works wonderfully if you stick...

  • PIONEER PORTRAITS

    The Times|Dec 10, 2020

Ten Years Ago December 9, 2010 No one seems to know exactly how tall the Northwest Grain Growers elevator in Dixie is, but even those who work there say it’s no higher than 130 feet. Inland Cellular is set to build a 180-foot cell phone tower at 9970 East Highway 12 near the elevator this spring and is seeking public comment on its proposal under the National Preservation Act of 1966. Waitsburg first responders helped a middle-aged Walla Walla man into an ambulance after he crashed his car into the guideline of a utility pole near the Laht N...

  • Teeny McMunn: My Recipe Box

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Dec 10, 2020

Sigh! This is what I do instead of dusting.  This caught my eye because I had plenty of cranberries from the sweet potato recipe, plenty of walnuts, and a half-gallon of orange juice. The only thing I didn’t have was fresh orange zest so I used dried orange zest. I wish I had gone to the store to get oranges because in my opinion, fresh orange zest would have brought out the orange flavor more. This recipe made 4 loaves. I made 3 in the aluminum loaf pans with lids, ready for gift-giving, and...

  • Habits-making & breaking

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Dec 10, 2020

4 is finally coming to an end, and we have endured. I know I hope for a great new year to enjoy with abandon. Maybe that’s why I’m a bit more forward-looking than usual. Not that I am planning to make a list of New Year’s resolutions. I know myself, the first time I break one, I will break them all. Maybe it’s just semantics; but, no resolutions; instead, it’s break bad habits and add good ones. First, I will pay my taxes on time this year and avoid the penalty I just paid for last year. Some...

Her parents, Benjamin Magill and Anna Hatfield Magill, were also born in Dayton, WA. Nadine attended Star Country School and graduated from Dayton HS, class of 1944, during WWII. • Pa'tridge in a Fir Tree

    Brad Trumbo, The Times|Dec 3, 2020

With the holidays upon us, the sights and sounds of Christmas surround the Waitsburg community. From glittering street decorations to themed music taking over our favorite radio stations, the magic of December can be neither escaped nor denied. Of the many celebratory songs, I am willing to place a wager on literally everyone knowing the "Twelve Days of Christmas." It's a timeless standard. And, love it or hate it, it shall be heard again this year. And what do we all expect on the first of the...

  • Teach like a pirate: Erin Murphy

    Mike Ferrians, The Times|Dec 3, 2020

I've known Waitsburgian Erin Murphy and her husband Nathanial for many years. It occurred to me recently: these people are always in school, always taking classes, always working toward another degree. I sat down with her recently to ask about her commitment to learning. Last year she earned her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Educational Studies and began teaching music at Starbuck school as a paraprofessional. It was the realization of a childhood dream, but other degrees came first-along with...

  • The cost of insomnia

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Dec 3, 2020

I don’t usually believe in karma, probably because I just don’t want to experience the wrath of someone imposing a karma curse on me. Lately, though, I am beginning to feel my sister may be getting me back with some sleep karma. I’ve recently experienced insomnia, which is not something I’ve ever had. Until recently, I was the best sleeper ever. My mother used to say that I could sleep anytime, anywhere, and on anything; a bed, floor, bed of nails, in a car, plane, tent, it didn’t matter. I...

  • GIFT GUIDE

    Beka Compton, The Times|Dec 3, 2020

A great thing about small towns is knowing the shop owners. They are our neighbors, our family, and friends. 2020 has been hard for everyone, and many small shops and businesses feel the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically. If Waitsburg, Prescott, and Dayton are lucky to have one thing, it's a long list of great businesses. This year, The Times team encourages locals to check out their hometown shops before browsing sites like Amazon for stocking stuffers, care packages, and unique...

  • Teeny McMunn: My Recipe Box

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Dec 3, 2020

A recipe from England This recipe is shared by Susan Jensen. In our delightful conversation, it turned to recipes. I asked her if she had any to share. She shared several, which will be fun to try. She sent this one for shortbread and it reminded me I used to make it around Christmas. There are many shapes one can do. Susan said it is called Petticoat Tails as it baked in the round with the ends looking like petticoats. The recipe is in grams so I looked up the conversion. I like watching...

  • Tech Talk: Digital gift-giving

    Brianna Wray, The Times|Dec 3, 2020

Remember when holiday greeting cards were simple? Down the stationery aisle, one could find a box that had the card, matching envelopes, and, with a book of stamps in hand, you're all set. Yeah, well, that ship sailed, and these days my mailbox is filled to the brim with beaming smiles from custom printed photo postcards. And since we haven't been allowed within six feet of extended family and friends for much of the year, this may be the perfect time to join the photo postcard trend. Get the...

  • It's Thanksgiving

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Nov 26, 2020

This year our family Thanksgiving will be a virtual party, sadly, but then it does save me driving two hours each way to my sister’s house, just to sit in a corner and read or knit with a big glass of wine while she overcooks the turkey and focuses on her grandchildren. The guys sit glued to the TV, watching football, not moving or helping, because they can’t take a chance they might miss a throw, sack, or touchdown. Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday; there are no mandatory gif...

  • The Cookie Chronicles I Chapter 23-Tricks and treats

    Paul Gregutt, The Times|Nov 26, 2020

Not long after Cookie had settled in, and I’d become infatuated with the idea of dog ownership, Mrs. G presented me with a slim volume entitled “101 Dog Tricks: Step by Step Activities to Engage, Challenge, and Bond with Your Dog” by Kyra Sundance and Chalcy. “Wow,” I thought, “this is just what we need!” If the title hadn’t already hooked me, the cover photo of a lovely chocolate brown Weimaraner with a newspaper in his mouth and a look that said, “Here’s your paper – anything else I can b...

  • Drawing on my iPad

    Lane Gwinn, The Times|Nov 26, 2020

I was one of those early nerds who couldn’t wait to get my hands on the first Apple iPad. I had been using my iPhone to draw using an app called Brushes. One of my art heroes, David Hockney, had been doing daily drawings on his iPhone and sending them to friends. I was intrigued by the images. The phone was too small for me, and I embraced the larger iPad immediately. I took it traveling and found I could have full color to work with. Because the app allows for layers and transparency, it was m...

  • PIONEER PORTRAITS

    The Times|Nov 26, 2020

Ten Years Ago November 25, 2010 This week’s early snow indicates the beginning of a cold season that could be a great year for Ski Bluewood, but disastrous for a Touchet Valley vulnerable to flooding from the Touchet and Coppei rivers. Daniel Huwe has just about exhausted his options. The 31-year-old man was found guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree assault by jury trial in Dayton in 2007. He was sentenced to 468 months, or 39 years, in prison and has repeatedly appealed. About 425 people attended the year’s Turkey Bingo at the Day...

  • Teeny McMunn: My Recipe Box

    Teeny McMunn, The Times|Nov 26, 2020

If this sounds familiar, it is. I used this recipe last year (and the year before) about this time. It’s worth repeating. I used to make this after Thanksgiving when I had a family and trying to stretch all the leftovers I could. It’s very good and would be handy if there is still “leftover” company. Review received on Sausage Stuffed Acorn Squash-Zenoby sent a message saying she made the recipe but used what she had handy, changing the bread crumbs to rice, no celery and Parmesan, but added yellow raisins and sharp cheddar cheese. She said it...

  • Stream these

    Brianna Wray, The Times|Nov 26, 2020

For longtime fans of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the Amazon original Truth Seekers (2020) is a welcome reunion with a whole new story. There’s more than meets the eye with cable installer Gus Roberts (Frost); he’s also a part-time paranormal investigator with a YouTube channel. Odd encounters grow more frequent until Roberts and his apprehensive partner, Elton John, begin to uncover a conspiracy that could bring about Armageddon for the entire human race. In the meantime, network signal str...

  • "Backroad to Dayton," 2019

    The Times|Nov 19, 2020

There are four ways to get to Dayton, WA from Waitsburg: Highway 12, the Rose Gulch detour, the Hogeye route, and this one via Weinhard Road. Each route has its own unique picturesque sections. Wish I'd been there when those two poplar trees in the distance were still gold with their fall foliage-it would have been a perfect highlight and splash of color. Next time....
