My two favorite things about summer are enjoying home-grown produce and that time of day when the sun sets, and the temperatures finally start to cool down. The back porch is my favorite setting for dining al fresco, where I can watch swallows zip across the yard as the sky erupts into electric golds and pinks. This pasta, full of my favorite summer vegetables, is creamy without being heavy, and perfect for elegant backyard entertaining. Ingredients: 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more 1 small...
Three blokes became five. Sergeant Kevan Maas and Deputy Sheriff Aaron Stites checked in with local businesses on Main Street in Waitsburg on Tuesday. Building and business owners were happy to have a chance to discuss local policing issues and opportunities to work with the WWSO on outreach and community programs....
The garden is really picking up pace with the hot temperatures and full sun. We took a quick trip to the coast over the holiday weekend and came back to not so much a garden as a jungle. Weeds are a constant battle, and I spent a cathartic few hours pulling them as fast as I could before they could go to seed and cause 10x more weeds next year. The garlic, onion, and shallot beds were close to harvest and woefully full of sow thistle, so I opted to dive in and harvest everything. If you're...
Touring through wine country or some of our region's wonderful microbreweries might leave the impression that the production of adult beverages should be left to the experts. With kegs, tanks, and other fermentation equipment larger than many cars, one might reasonably conclude that a small-scale homebrew operation is costly and infeasible. Not the case. Homebrewing is relatively inexpensive, straightforward, and leaves ample room to experiment with flavors grown right in your backyard. As any...
DAYTON-The Wenaha Gallery's upcoming Art Event features Denise Wagner of Kennewick, specializing in Japanese wrapped stones. This art form involves using Japanese knot and basketry techniques to wrap smooth stones with natural cane ribbonry. Wagner, a licensed home healthcare provider, was working at a retirement facility when she saw a gentleman wrapping stones. He noticed her interest and invited her to join him, and he would teach her the technique. "We became fast friends, and we got...
A former soldier turned high school teacher, Dan Forester just wanted to watch a soccer game after receiving less-than-pleasant news in the year 2022. With his young daughter, Muri, snuggled closely, Dan is shocked as he watches armed soldiers appear out of a wormhole, onto the field. "We are you, thirty years in the future. We are fighting a war, our enemy is not human, and we are losing in eleven months time." Global leaders initiate the first-ever worldwide draft, sending civilians into the f...
In keeping with my love of old movies, I was recently reminded of: It Happened in Naples. I admit with no hesitancy that I am no Sophia Loren. But sometimes things happen at the Weinhard that are reminiscent of an old movie, and it doesn’t hurt to dream for a minute that I could be a little like one of the most beautiful women in the world. But face it, as lovely as Dayton and Waitsburg are, they’re not Naples. This past Saturday night, a lovely couple came to the restaurant for dinner. As we...
Ten Years Ago July 14, 2011 When you hear Bobbi and Barney Chambers talk about Sophie, Cleo, Denny, Lone Star and Superdude, you'd think they're talking about a circus family of seven that's not getting enough quality time together. "We don't see them enough," Bobbi Jo Chambers says about her loved ones. "We're putting on too many of these shows." But the couple from Cottonwood, Idaho, a town about two and half hours from Dayton, is actually pining after more time with their show mules, some of...
For a brief moment, my mother worried that I was a future sociopath...at the age of four. The discovery of a notebook full of drawings featuring a giant knife wielding woman in pearls would alarm any parent. Thankfully, before seeking out a pediatric psychologist my mother caught me in front of the TV, doodling while attentively watching the great Julia Child. Before I knew how to write, drawing was my way of documenting the recipes and techniques. Realizing my PBS viewing went beyond Mr....

If you've been craving the sand and surf, this article may or may not be for you. On June 22, I woke my three-year-old traveling companion, Gracie, at 3:00 a.m. We said goodbye to my husband for the next eight days and began a twenty-hour journey that landed us in paradise. In Kihei, Hawaii, to be exact, just in time to beat the hottest week I have ever heard of in my more than 20 years of living in Waitsburg. After boarding the early-morning flight out of Walla Walla, Gracie and I had a...
I am an old movie fan, and lately, the classic flick, The Three Faces of Eve starring Joanne Woodward, has been on my mind. Probably because, in a small way, I feel like my life is emulating that story. I know I only have one personality, but I have three "careers" happening at once, on overlapping days and two "start of the week" days. It can all make me a little crazy. Monday morning is the start of my Monday through Friday job as a Los Angeles insurance broker. I field questions from clients...
While swimming in Hawaii, I overheard a woman talking to her grandson about the protests on Kaho'olawe, the island that seemed just a stone’s throw away from where I was standing. “I was there, you know,” she told him, catching my attention in full. The day before, at the Maui Ocean Center, I read newspaper article after article about the island, the bombings, and the destruction of a sacred place. The woman was kind enough to include me in her lesson, but after a quick internet search, I knew...
Few bands making music today have as impeccable a discography as the Brooklyn-based quartet, Big Thief. Starting with their 2016 debut, Masterpiece, they have pumped out a total of four studio records in the past five years, all met with near-universal acclaim. Their music is pure rock and roll, a refreshingly raw mix of the basics: wailing guitars, energetic drums, and a vocalist that gives every song her all. The ingredients are all familiar, but Big Thief is a master chef of rock music,...
Ten Years Ago July 7, 2011 When they bought their Keystone Montana 5th wheel in September, Lynn and Paul Mantz-Powers knew it would be months before they'd retire. But they were so excited about the prospect of hitting the road and adopting a new nomadic lifestyle this summer that they practically moved out of their adjacent family home on Bolles Road and into their 400-square-foot travel trailer. One's a cowgirl. One's a mother of two. One's a chef. One's a graduate winemaker. One's a...
As a child in Los Angeles, I often spent weekends with my father who lived a block from Echo Park Lake, many years before it became the gentrified hipster neighborhood of today. We would walk around the park people watching, feeding the ducks, while searching for the perfect bench to sit and draw. As a future foodie, these visits to the park were full of gastronomic discoveries. On top of the omnipresent taco trucks parked around the perimeter, there was always an array of food carts to choose f...
In the late 2000's, when these photos were taken, no one expected the building that once housed the Farmer's Cafe to become an espresso coffee shop, with a counter made out of the original cafe's sign. No one expected Nothing New Antiques to be converted into a busy salon and spa. The Plaza Beauty Salon was a Main Street mainstay, even after moving locations. However, retirement called and owner Peggy Jones closed her shop a few years ago. Main Street has been home to many businesses. The...
Aloha from Maui! The waves were perfect on June 23, for perfect boarding at Beach Big, Makena State Park. The beach is nearly 1.5 miles long, making it one of the most popular beaches on the island. The Times reporter, Beka Compton, and family found a cool place to get out of the Pacific Northwest heatwave....
The family of Greg Davis would like to sincerely thank our many relatives and friends for the cards, food, flowers, phone calls, messages, comfort, and kindness shown to us during this difficult time of loss. Your support was very much appreciated and of great comfort to all of the family. Vicki, Sheila, Shelli, Jake, Darla, & Debbie...
The dog days are close at hand, and with a record heatwave happening as we speak, what better way to beat the heat than to head down to your favorite swimming hole with "Rover" in tow. Few things are as rewarding as a romp in the river or pond with your pup, particularly the variety that enjoy a good fetch and retrieve. My setters are shy on the game of fetch, but a good swim is a home run when the temperatures soar into the 90s and beyond. One of their favorite spots is right in Waitsburg,...
I am now officially and happily the Ice Queen. Just in time for the brutal heat wave that struck this week, we finally have a functioning ice machine. Sometimes, the small pleasures in life (albeit this time an expensive one) provide much-needed satisfaction and relief. Relief that I don't have to stop to buy and then carry 40-50 pounds of ice into the restaurant daily. More importantly, I can generously fill our patrons' glasses with ice water, lemonade, or iced tea. This new modern machine...
Walla Walla – The July exhibit at Combine Art Collective will feature work by Sheilia Coe and Dianna Woolley. After retiring, Shelia Coe, pursued her other interests, including becoming a Master Garder. Fortunately, she took an interest in sculpture after taking instruction from sculptor, Penny Michel. Coe works in clay, creating pieces inspired by nature and animals. Her childhood was one full of art, thanks to a mother who encouraged her daughter to become an artist. It just took a while. P...
Groovy Session One of Walla Walla Rock Camp is in the history books. As I write this, Session Two is in progress. I've been aware of Rock Camp for years through the involvement of friends in the Touchet Valley, but this is the first year I've participated. The organizers recruited me as a keyboard and vocal coach. Rock Camp is an annual intensive music program for youth ages 12-18. They receive instruction from experienced musicians on everything from guitar, piano, and voice to songwriting,...
Ten Years Ago June 30, 2011 Waitsburg residents and visitors noticed several weeks ago how each of the entrances to town – eastbound Highway 124, northbound Highway 12 and westbound Highway 12 – got new welcoming banners with the words “Waitsburg A-Waits You,” a phrase coined by Mayor Walt Gobel to invite travelers to the downtown area one block off Highway 12. In addition to the six new banners at city entrances, the city also put up 10 new downtown banners on the streetlights to complement the existing 11, and mounted 44 hanging baskets...
