WAITSBURG – The Waitsburg-Prescott boys' basketball team is heating up as the season draws to a close. With their fourth and fifth straight wins over the weekend, the Cardinals are now 4-4 and tied for third in the Southeast 2B standings with Asotin and second-place Tri-Cities Prep. Their overall record is 10-6.

On Friday, the Cardinals hosted Asotin and cruised to a win over the Panthers, 67-48. The high-scoring contest featured big games from Owen Lanning, who scored 18 points, and Kaimen Suffia, who had 12. Jacob Dunn finished with eight, including two treys.

Lanning, Suffia, Dunn and Devin Acevedo each pulled down five rebounds. Acevedo also had five assists.

The Cardinals took a 30-23 lead into halftime, and led by 20 after three quarters, 54-34.

"We were up by about 30 at one point against Asotin," said WP coach Tavis Crittenden. "We were able to get all of our players in the game for awhile towards the end, and that's a good thing."

On Saturday, the Tri-Cities Prep Jaguars came to Waitsburg tied for the league lead, with a 5-1 record. The Cardinals stymied TCP, beating them 52-41.

WP started slowly and trailed 10-6 after a quarter of play, but easily outscored the Jaguars in each of the remaining quarters.

For the game, Suffia led the Cardinals with 20 points, including going 8-11 from the free-throw line. Lanning had 13 points, including a three-pointer. Dunn led WP in rebounds, with eight. Devin Acevedo had six assists.

Crittenden praised the play of Suffia. "He elevates and finishes around the net, and draws a lot of fouls," he said. "He's way fast, and he really attacks the basket." Crittenden also complimented Acevedo's team play. "Devin had at least five assists both nights," he said. "That gives us a big boost."

This weekend, the Cardinals travel to DeSales on Friday and then finish out the regular season Saturday by hosting Dayton.
