  • Plum Torte

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Oct 13, 2022

Each growing season we experiment with different fruits and vegetables in the garden. While some happily flourish, others just seem to fizzle and disappoint. Through it all, the most reliable producer, year after year, has been our purple plum tree. Easy to take care of, and quick growing, the branches of this tree are always heavy with fruit by the start of fall. From pies, cakes, chutneys, and jams, this time of year is always marked by the flavor of sweet, backyard stone fruit. These dark...

  • Palouse Outdoors: Women on the Wing hosts pre-season upland hunt

    Brad Trumbo, The Times|Oct 6, 2022

Smoke hung like a heavy fog in the Palouse River canyon, making for a simultaneously mesmerizing yet apocalyptic scene. The sun appeared ablaze, blood-orange behind the smoke as it climbed above the dark basalt bluffs. Ahead, the moon was falling behind the horizon over Connell as if retreating from the sun. It was massive and glowing orange but confirmed that the smoke was less intense over the miles ahead. Good news for the Blue Mountain Pheasant Forever's first-ever Women on the Wing upland...

  • King Estate 2021 Sauvignon Blanc

    Paul Gregutt, The Times|Oct 6, 2022

King Estate is best known for being Oregon's leading producer for Pinot Gris. But the winery portfolio has expanded to include a lineup covering almost every fine wine style made in our neighboring state. This tart and refreshing white wine is sourced from nine different vineyards; the blend includes 4% Semillon. It's stylish, fleshy and firm, with a deft mix of citrus rind, fresh verbena, crisp green apple and a hint of cucumber. There's a suggestion of residual sugar, just enough to cut the...

  • PIONEER PORTRAITS

    The Times|Oct 6, 2022

Ten Years Ago October 4, 2012 After 40 years of working at the Waitsburg Grocery Store on Main Street, Beryl Witt is retiring. Witt, 74, also known lovingly in the store as "Beryl-ie Buns" and "Beryl-ie Bird" was showered with hugs, praise and memoires last Friday at the store. Grocery store patrons enjoyed cake and told Witt the store would be a different place without her. "The Waitsburg Grocery is not going to be the same," co-owner Trina Cole said. Witt said she moved to Waitsburg in 1948....

  • Pollo en Mole Verde

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Oct 6, 2022

This past week, Waitsburg has been graced with gorgeous sunny fall days, and crisp cool nights. The kind of weather that nudges me back into the kitchen, inspired by early fall produce, and cravings for slow-cooked comfort food. While researching recipes, I came across this gorgeous green mole made from pulverized pumpkin seeds, fresh cilantro, and green chiles. Much different than the rich, dark black mole most people are familiar with, this is just one of the many colorful varieties of mole...

  • Amplifying Voices

    Mike Ferrians, The Times|Sep 29, 2022

The last three months have seen a great deal of musical activity with Walla Walla Music Organization, the music training youth advocacy program I joined mid-pandemic, teaming up with founder Rodney Outlaw and serving as a program coordinator. We continue to function as an independent organization, licensed with the State of Washington, and partner with other agencies to connect our musical passions with the growth and development of students. We were hired by the 21st Century Learning Centers pr...

  • Apple and Wild Huckleberry Pie

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Sep 29, 2022

Happy Autumn. With these warm sunny days, and crisp cool nights, the weather this week has been perfect. After an unusual summer in the garden, the sight of our pear and apple trees loaded with fruit has been a welcomed delight. One that has also inspired a new season of kitchen experiments. The warm pleasure of spiced apples encased in buttery, flakey crust is a cherished American classic that needs little adjusting. However, with a bag of foraged wild huckleberries sitting on the counter, I...

  • Around the Valley: with Karen Huwe

    Karen Huwe, The Times|Sep 29, 2022

The fall season is a great time to take a day trip to ride the Eagle Cap Excursion Train. The train leaves Elgin, Oregon, and travels along the Grande Ronde and Wallowa Rivers on a section of the historic Joseph Branch rail line. I have taken the train twice; both were "train robbery" adventures. The first time the robbers took our jewels and the last time they took our money. The event is kid friendly, and the fake jewels and money are provided. You're riding along enjoying the scenery when...

  • Hells Gate State Park

    Karen Huwe, The Times|Sep 22, 2022

Hells Gate State Park, located in Lewiston, Idaho, was once the site of a Nez Perce village. Today, one can enjoy an abundance of activities. Located along the Snake River, park visitors appreciate the outdoors as they enjoy swimming at the long stretch of day-use beach, boating, fishing, and kayaking. Another adventure is stopping at the marina to schedule a day trip up Hells Canyon on a jet boat. Out of the water, you can play disc golf, take a walk, or ride your bicycle on the trails around...

  • Dog Walking and Other Dangerous Sports

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, The Times|Sep 22, 2022

It is a well-known fact that I am a klutz. Added to my determination to exercise, it’s become a dangerous lifestyle. Recently, I took Mugsy (all thirteen pounds of him) for a late-night walk along with two friends and their dogs. It was dark; Mugsy pulled, I didn’t see the curb, tripped, fell onto the sidewalk, and hit another curb with full force onto my right wrist. With a high pain tolerance and hope it was just a sprain, I filled zip lock bags with ice, took Advil, and tried to sleep. It...

  • The Miscreant Project 2020 GobSMack'd GSM

    Paul Gregutt, The Times|Sep 22, 2022

The casual label reader might easily miss the layers of puns and jokester references scattered on the wine labels and throughout this winery's highly entertaining website. Here the name puts the letters GSM in caps, which tips off the blend: 47% Syrah, 27% Grenache and 27% Mourvèdre. Another sensational value from TruthTeller's Miscreant Project, this layered and textured wine mixes light red fruits, sandalwood, almond butter, smooth almost silky tannins and a finishing hint of buttered...

  • Pesce all'Acqua Pazza (Fish in Crazy Water)

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Sep 22, 2022

We make several trips to the southern Washington coast throughout the year. From the lazy sunny days of summer to the dramatic storms of winter, there is something special about each season. My favorite time to visit is September through October, when the weather is still lovely and the post-Labor Day tourist crowds are much smaller. Last week, we were able to sneak off for a quick weekend get-away where we were met with perfect weather and a chance to satisfy our built-up seafood cravings. At t...

  • The Ballad of Little Popo

    Popo Ott, The Times|Sep 15, 2022

I call this series "Just Vignettes" because that's what they are, just short snapshots of things that have happened to me or have been told to me. I can vouch the stories you read here are mostly true. On a warm Ford Island evening in Pearl Harbor, a maintenance man using a firehose cleaned the beams over the exterior passageways. Little Popo was carried by the force of the water from her nursery, falling to the teak deck below. Someone found her in a puddle and picked her up, naked and wet but...

  • Kayaking the Snake

    Karen Huwe, The Times|Sep 15, 2022

There is still time to enjoy great weather conditions to kayak this September on the Snake River. It might be a little hazy and smoky at times, but with no wind, kayaking downriver is a pleasant way to spend three hours. And it is a good workout. Along with three of my sisters, a cousin, and a friend from Lewiston who knows the area, we traveled to Asotin to launch our kayaks. It was a tad cool when we started at 10 am, but the sun soon warmed us up. We traveled about 11 miles downriver to...

Ten Years Ago September 13, 2012 Erma Lee Smith will be honored this Sunday as Pioneer of the Year because her family history in Waitsburg is extensive – she hails from the Hales who date back to 1890 in the Waitsburg area. “I’m Pioneer of the Year and turning 80,” Smith said last week. “I’m flying high.” She learned last spring via a letter from the Waitsburg Historical Society that she would be receiving the award this year at the Pioneer Fall Festival. Smith will be honored on Sunday follow...

  • My Favorite Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Buttercream

    Luke Chavez, The Times|Sep 15, 2022

Perhaps because of my approaching birthday, or a simple craving for the mood-enhancing properties of cocoa, I have recently been dreaming of a perfect chocolate cake. Balancing sweetness with the deep, complex flavors of cocoa is a culinary science unto itself. This much-loved recipe results in a moist, silky textured cake with a rich and comforting flavor. Finished with a luscious vanilla buttercream frosting, this cake makes a memorable centerpiece to any celebration, big or small. Ingredients...

  • Fair Season

    The Times|Sep 8, 2022

It is fair season, and Walla Walla Fair and Frontier Days kicked of the fun from August 31 to September 4. Swine, horses, cattle, goats, but no poultry this year. To make sure poultry exhibitors could still participate despite the bird flu, entries consisted of photos and stuffed chicken stand-ins. Next week is Columbia County Fair from September 9 to 11....

  • New show at the Creative Mill on Main

    Lane Gwinn, The Times|Sep 8, 2022

. WAITSBURG-Artist Dez'Mon Omega Fair described his new installation in Waitsburg as "bright and inspired, an immersive draped and piled display of the artist's newest work: large wall-size drop clothes depict orbs on orbs on orbs, organs of reproduction and gestation, the eyes of indecipherable Earth and alien creatures, planets form and eggs dissolve." Much of the artwork was created over two months in the large auditorium of The Liberty Theater in Walla Walla. Fair created an organic and symb...

  • Cheers: Fearless musician

    Lane Gwinn, The Times|Sep 8, 2022

WAITSBURG—On Sunday night at American 35, Dominic Fazzari was drawn to the vintage upright piano. Diners were given a mini concert by the talented 13 year old from Walla Walla. The young muscian commanded attention with his first song, Bohemian Rhasody by Queen. He said he started playing five years ago and takes piano lessons from Ilene Tyler. His teacher has encouraged his journey, allowing him to investigate his taste in music. Asked how he chose the music he plays, he credited a youtube c...
