First, a report on the Banana Breakfast Cookies. They are a winner. I used quick oats, instead of rolled oats, which I chose over old fashioned oats, but next time, I will buy the rolled oats. I added a tablespoon of peanut butter, (I could have added more!), and chopped almonds. My first batch I didn’t use parchment paper. They stuck a little bit as there is no oil in the batter. So use the parchment paper. I also added a half teaspoon of baking powder and a little bit of sugar (perhaps a f...

Ten Years Ago March 4, 2010 Retired state patrol sergeant Walt Gobel has declared his candidacy for mayor of Waitsburg, saying he is running with a slate of candidates nominated by the new “Truth and Trust” caucus. The caucus, which is roughly 40 members, also named Karl Newell, Kevin House, Orville Branson, Scott Nettles and Marty Dunn as nominees for City Council. A marina in the dead of winter isn’t the kind of place you’d expect to see a lot of life. But on a late February weekday morning, Lyons Ferry definitely has a pulse. Some boaters...
I didn't get a chance to make these this weekend. I have bananas, but they are not ripe yet. I think one could make these every time you have ripe bananas on hand, if you don't want to make banana bread, or don't have time. For those who don't eat much breakfast, or want to have a grab and go, these sound perfect. The reviews are all positive, saying what a great banana flavor they have. Many added a half teaspoon of salt and baking powder but said it was good either way. One said she added a ta...

Ten Years Ago February 25, 2010 For the first time in six years, the Cardinals have won a berth in the 2B state tournament in Spokane after beating Gar-Pal 53-46 in a hard-fought battle at Whitman College Monday night. Since Waitsburg and Prescott teams are now combined, it’s the first time in 78 years since any player from Prescott has gone to state. In this case, the Tigers are represented by Guillermo Hernandez. Repeating her theme of stability and progress, Waitsburg Mayor Markeeta Little Wolf said the “one of a kind” city is in bette...
I was really wanting to try this cake and what better time than when it is my turn for coffee hour at church. But it was not without drama!! This is a layered cake, caramel, flan, and chocolate. As with most recipes, this has several versions. This one comes from All Recipes.com. Let me tell you all that I did wrong so you don't make the same mistakes. First, my Bundt pan was too small. I think the older ones were larger so that created its own drama. Second, I substituted Smucker's caramel,...

Several days later, Alison’s body is found in a remote spot on a nearby cay, and two local men—employees at the resort—are arrested. But the evidenc...

Ten Years Ago February 18, 2010 A ski hill on Valentine’s Day is an unnatural setting for sorrow, particularly when it comes from a gathering of college students far too young to be mourning the loss of a close friend. But the intimate memorial service on Ski Bluewood’s Huckleberry run was a fitting tribute to the 19-year-old member of the Whitman College Ski Club who died Saturday in the mountain’s second fatal accident. He was the first to die from his injuries on Bluewood before rescuers had a chance to transport him to a medical facil...
I seem to be on a dinner idea kick, but I do have a yummy cake I'm going to try and share. This recipe was shared by a friend, Sofia, who brought it for a potluck. If you do not like shrimp, or don't eat it, then another meat can be substituted. It did comment to not use fresh cooked rice, but to use leftover rice, or cook the day before. Otherwise, it will get mushy (I did not know that.) Sofia said she does not cook the eggs, then put it in, but beats the egg and stirs it in to be cooked....
The soul of Eulalie Hopkins Schreck was carried away by angels when she peacefully passed away on January 25, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. Eulalie was born in Dayton, Washington on May 12, 1921 to Harold and Della Hopkins. She grew up on the Highlands and attended Highland School (skipping 3rd grade) until she went to high school in Dayton. She graduated high school in 1938 and then enrolled at Washington State College for 2 ½ years. She then moved to Walla Walla and was employed at Sherwood and Roberts. She was later employed at Prest...
Ten Years Ago February 11, 2010 Waitsburg city council members Jeff Broom and Kathleen Powers said this week they won’t seek another one-year term in this spring’s elections. The development, which opens two seats on the five-member body, may prompt several new candidates to sign up for the ballot. Laurie Richardson joked that it came down to a simple choice. She and her husband Les were either going to invest in wind and solar power or be doomed to eat cat food for the rest of their ret...

This recipe was recommended to me by Chuck Reeves, a twist on the tomato aspic, and is found on Cooks.com. Tomato aspic is an old fashioned recipe that was at most potlucks or gatherings as well as lime Jello with cottage cheese and pineapple. Potlucks are great to share and taste those dishes one doesn't often make at home. History: Aspics are made of gelatin, most often served in the shape of a fancy mold. They date back to the middle ages, with a detailed recipe of aspic being written in 1375...
WORLD WIDE WEB-It seems like everyone is on social media. These days there are several newer or emerging social media platforms, but Facebook, the classic, is still maintaining its foothold with 2.37 billion active users. In recent years, Facebook has worked to create transparency in its user base. They've chosen to focus on verified first and last names as opposed to Instagram handles, for instance. Funkyjazzguy88 is now John Smith. Doing away with creative usernames makes their...

Members of the Waitsburg Lions Club issued a collective sigh of relief late last week when club funds were returned by the family of Don Johnson, the former treasurer who has reportedly admitted embezzling them. Shaken by the episode, the club wisely made...

Reader Tracy Daniel submitted this photo of the Waitsburg 2nd/3rd grade youth basketball team, coached by Gabe Kiefel. Here they react to an early basket the team scored last Saturday at the Walla Walla YMCA. Daniel said, "They don't keep score but it seemed that we sank more buckets than the other team."...
Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano Twelve-year old Edward and his family board a plane headed to Los Angeles. The plane crashes and Edward is the sole survivor. We follow Edward as he copes with the aftermath of losing his entire family and deals with the fame of being the only survivor of the 184 passengers aboard the plane. Alternately, the details of the plane and the stories of the other passengers reveal what happened on that day. This is a wonderful story of human resilience after tragedy....
I'm still on the comfort food kick. Most of the time a recipe will come to my email, mostly All Recipes.com. I either delete it, make it, and/or share it. This one reminded me of when I was back home and we would get a pot of goulash. I remember thinking it was so good. As I mentioned, I don't think mom did much more than hamburger, macaroni, and tomatoes, with of course salt and pepper. There are several versions of goulash, probably depending on where you grew up. Some like it with a green...
Ten Years Ago January 28, 2010 The local horse racing industry has been dancing on the edge of decline for some time. But a shortage in state funding for smaller tracks could force organizers to cancel spring races altogether. “We thought we had 2010 racing events covered,” said Melissa Hansen, who oversees the Dayton Days horse races scheduled for May, “now we’re all up in the air. It’s a scary space to be in because we just don’t know what’s going to happen.” Waitsburg has a new fire chief, wh...

Following Vicki's article last week about comfort foods and warm soups, I remembered this one. I had put it in the recipe column awhile ago and I got quite a few positive feedbacks on it. One lady mentioned to me that she thought it was way too much spinach and used only about half the amount. I read some of the reviews. Many said they used hot Italian sausage, doubled the amount of barley and used 3 carrots instead of one. A few added canned tomatoes. Some used more garlic. Some more...
