November 2 is Election Day, and candidates vying for seats on the Waitsburg City Council and Mayor positions are participating in the city's first county-run election. Ballots were mailed out on October 13. This year, citizens interested in serving on the city council had to specify which seat they were running for when they declared candidacy. In the past, the city's elections were held annually and the top five vote earning candidates were elected to the city council. This year's election...
Ten Years Ago October 13, 2011 It has been 25 years since Markeeta Little Wolf has belted out songs with her powerful voice to an audience. Little Wolf performed on TV, in club acts and even on the theater stage in musicals from age 12 to 28, when she gave it all up to sell real estate and have a different kind of life. Little Wolf realized about one yar ago that she still has one more show in her, she said. And she's been working since on songs, lighting, and costumes to give her friends in...
Autumn, with its crisp sunny days and frosty nights, such as we have had this past week, is my favorite time of year. Watching the leaves change color, donning cozy sweaters, and tending bubbling pots of soup, are how I celebrate this season. Of all the ingredients used in the fall kitchen, winter squash is probably the most versatile. Sweet or savory, there are countless ways to enjoy the many shapes and colors of the squash family. Here the squash is roasted before being pureed into a silky...
The early golden hour bathed the landscape in a peachy hue as the setters and I stood by the truck. It was somewhere around day number 200 that I had set foot on the grasslands between Waitsburg and Minnesota since 2011. This day, we would embark on the Sheyenne National Grasslands in North Dakota. Sharp-tailed grouse were beginning to stir somewhere in the expanse before us. We were north of the Sheyenne River in an area where it was safe to hunt sharp-tails. Endangered Species Act-protected...

And the seasons all have their beginnings and endings. The season for driving through the Walla Walla Valley with my top down, the wind blowing in my face, is ending. According to my weather app, it looks like tomorrow will be the end of convertible weather, which coincides with my final push for tomatoes ripening on the vine. Sadly, I am watching my plants shrivel and wither away, as the days grow colder and shorter. I am glad that we at least did have a successful crop of cucumbers, peppers an...
Staff at The Times office in Waitsburg got a freindly visit from Ralph Jones. This long time subscriber is proud to be from the Waistburg class of 1955. He was visiting from Texas and shared some travel stories that reminded us what a small world it is....
We've been lucky so far and have dodged any potential early frosts. On the first of September, it got down to 34 degrees at our house. Yes, you read that right. We managed to squeak by and have since had only one other night in the thirties. I've been dutifully harvesting the tomatoes that have all finally started to ripen. Better late than never! Since mostly giving up on the garden for the year (I know, shame on me), I'm not super worried about prolonging the season. I'll glean the tomatoes,...
Ten Years Ago October 6, 2011 Dayton had its moment in the sun on Saturday as it displayed the best it has to offer including historic homes, flourishing businesses, and plenty of local art for its event Dayton on Tour. Visitors had a chance to pick up a guidebook and walk into historical homes in town that had recently been renovated. Jennie Dickinson, a volunteer for the Dayton Historic Depot, said the home tours are her favorite part of Dayton on Tour, especially the Broughton Mansion this ye...
This past summer, with its long dry heatwave, was difficult on several plants in our kitchen garden. I had lost all hope for our row of basil plants in August, as they looked quite sad and limp. Now, after a month of less severe temperatures, the garden has rebounded and we have a giant crop of perfectly fragrant basil, just in time to coincide with the abundance of late season ripe tomatoes that have piled up. Though summer is technically over, the season has been extended in our house with all...

Last week, I took a trip to British Columbia to visit friends, see some art, go to the season opening of the Symphony and eat. Seems like ages since I stayed in downtown Vancouver and was curious to see how it has fared over the pandemic. First I had to get into the country. At the time of my trip, U.S. citizens were allowed to cross the border by car or flight. I used the ArriveCAN app to make sure I had the current travel information. I chose to drive, allowing me to take too many clothes,...
WAITSBURG-Waitsburg has attracted another fine artist to town. Fred Betz was born in California and raised on the East Coast. He studied art at the University of California Santa Cruz and Columbia University in New York. Betz is an oil painter who uses his location as inspiration for much of his work. Needless to say, he loves to travel. He recently spent five months in Cortona, Italy, living in a house that was owned by famous Renaissance artist Luca Signorelli. During his stay, Betz said that...
DAYTON-Musicals, movies, and puppeteer shows are just a few of the performances coming up at the Liberty Theater, nestled on Main Street in Dayton. In June, the Touchet Valley Arts Council announced that they had selected Debbie Ayerst as the Liberty theater's manager. She had been working at the theater for roughly three years before taking the helm herself. "I had never seen a live play until I came here, started working here, and saw one on our stage," Ayerst said. "I have never been a movie...
Ten Years Ago September 29, 2011 The Waitsburg City Council last Wednesday night voted 4-1 in favor of enacting a new ordinance that will give the city the ability to shut off city utilities to citizens who don’t pay bills or violate the nuisance codes. This new way to handle violators should help the city enforce its rules better, said Randy Hinchliffe, the city’s clerk-treasurer. In the past, the city would give citizens a ticket if they didn’t follow the rules, but the Sheriff’s Office...
The season for sweaters and comfort food has arrived, and I couldn't be happier. While autumn is my favorite season for many reasons, fall cooking is at the top of that list. Few vegetables are more comforting than the humble and versatile potato. Baked, mashed, roasted, or fried, I am always experimenting with ways to elevate the much-loved starchy tuber. One recipe that I have come back to time and time again, is Julia Child's Gratin Dauphinois. Thinly sliced potatoes scalloped with milk,...
My mother drilled certain behavioral lessons into our psyche, starting when we were very young. One that has stuck with me is, “Don’t blow your own horn!” No bragging, boasting, or puffing of the chest. Not only is it bad manners, but you may be setting yourself up for embarrassment or humiliation at some future point. Sorry Mom, but a little brag, I have good intuition and instincts about people. A trait I probably inherited from my mother. During my insurance career, I’ve hired several...

It's no secret that I have a family full of foodies. We plan entire trips around eateries with raving reviews, but since traveling hasn't been an option lately, we've had to put our trips on hold. We recently learned about Goldbelly, an online restaurant marketplace, from a friend who often travels for work. From Lahaina to Juneau, New Orleans, all the way up to Chicago, Goldbelly offers online ordering from well known and not so well known eateries across the country. Macadamia nut tarts, lobst...
Recently, I connected with friends that I hadn’t had contact with for several years. Our “catch-up” conversation was not the usual, as we all have had significant life changes to share. Without any prompting, they acknowledged mine were more dramatic than theirs. When I told them of my move to Waitsburg, their first reaction was, “where?” I gave them the geographical high points and explained that I am not on the “wet” side of the Cascade mountains but in the country of wheat and wine. Next ca...
