DAYTON - Columbia County Sheriff Walt Hessler told county commissioners last week that he will retire, effective June 30. Also an- nouncing her retirement in June is Carole Sleeman, who is administrative assistant and chief civil deputy in the Sheriff's Office. Hessler is currently serving his second term, which ends in 2014. He was origi- nally elected sheriff as a write-in candidate in 2006. He was re-elected in 2010. Hessler declined an interview request from The Times. In a written...

After the decision was already made to begin including a crossword puzzle in each issue of The Times (the first one appears this week on page 10), I did a little research and discovered that we’ve just begun the centennial anniversary year of the crossword puzzle. The first word puzzle in the form we know today as a crossword appeared in the New York World newspaper on December 21, 1913. So it’s about time we got on board. Believe it or not, crossword puzzles have endured their share of con...
DAYTON - The Dayton boys basketball team opened with a fight against Asotin Saturday night and kept the game close but ultimately couldn't stop the Panthers, falling 45-39. The Bulldogs opened strong, with Wyatt Frame posting the first points of the game. The Panthers couldn't find many openings and struggled to match Dayton's scores. The Bulldogs forced Asotin into a shot clock violation with 1:01 left in the first period. Both teams posted shots but the Bulldogs were able to slow the Panthers... Full story
PASCO - Waitsburg- Prescott nearly overcame a 16-point third quarter deficit to pull off a road win against league foe Tri-Cities Prep here Saturday. Sadly, the Cardinals run ran out of gas late, and the Jaguars escaped with a 60-50 victory. The two sides appeared evenly matched through the first four minutes. Owen Lanning's basket-and-free- throw at 4:02 gave the Cards the lead 8-6. It was the last lead the Cardinals would hold. Tri-Cities Prep reeled off 20 of the game's next 25 points to... Full story
PASCO - Waitsburg- Prescott's girls dominated the Tri-Cities Prep Jaguars in nearly all aspects of their game Saturday in Pasco-steals, rebounds, field goal attempts, and free throw tries. The one place it didn't-made free throws- proved costly, and proved the margin of defeat in the Cardinals 51-47 loss. In all, WP shot an astounding 41 times from the charity stripe, connecting on just 12. "Twenty-nine percent from the free throw line- that's just ridiculous," said a wryly amused WP coach J...
Last week I wrote about how Dayton’s kids— especially boys— aren’t turning out in numbers for sports compared to years past. I also noted that the lack of turnout had nothing to do with school size, which has remained fairly consistent over the years. Today I stop reminiscing and kvetching and get down to the big question: ‘Why?’ As I put together my original article on Dayton’s school board voting to let eighth- graders play up on the high school team four weeks ago, I asked several int...
DAYTON - The Dayton girls' basketball team wavered on tired legs briefly on Saturday, but got the adrenaline coursing to seal Asotin's fate, taking the Panthers down 60-56 in overtime. The first period was slow, with foul calls increasing to the point of seeming constant and interrupting the flow of the game. The lady Bulldogs moved slower than normal, tired from playing two nights in a row. But they didn't let it keep them from shooting. The Bulldogs and Panthers kept the score close and en... Full story

Himmelberger was al- ready more familiar with the hospital than most,...

I have a cousin who lives in a big city. There, she tells me, finals are heavily- standardized tests that take place outside the classroom and are so brain-draining that days are given off from school for the purpose of the post-finals mental recupera- tion of the student body. Here in Waitsburg of course, finals are simply unusually long tests given on the last two days of each semester. (A few super-orga- nized teachers do a quarterly final as well.) And far from being stan- dardized exams, Wa...
WAITSBURG - For Waitsburg High School senior Seth Deal, shoes are essential; so hearing that a billion children live in poverty and many don't have shoes was a shock. Deal is a runner, and his passion for running drove him to focus on running shoes for the research portion of his senior project. When he thought about a charity to work with for his project, he thought a shoe drive would be a good cause to dedicate his time to. Deal said when he learned about Soles4Souls, it seemed like a perfect...

The great sages tell us that all things seek balance. "Seeking balance" implies at least some swinging back and forth across some "perfect" point, tracing a sinuous line as momentum rises and falls. With a little contemplation, the natural movement of the market becomes "intuitively obvious", as Professor Pyle, my old statistics instructor often said. It sure is easy to see a trend when one is looking backward in time. Thus a problem is created for us human beings, as we are all hard-wired to quickly identify patterns in things. The end...
Driving along Old County Highway, Walla Walla, you'll enter the community of "Frenchtown," where several original wineries reside that helped catapult Washington State's wine movement, including Cougar Crest Estate Winery. A well-received winery of the Inland Northwest, Cougar Crest's Frenchtown tasting room sits off the highway, up against a stunning backdrop of the rocky red cliffs prominent to this appellation. Cougar Crest owner/operators, David and Deborah Han- sen came to Walla Walla in 1995, first raising grapes and eventually taking on...
