Lady Bulldogs Steal Two Irish Victories

April 21, 2011

Lady Bulldog Kayla Turner pitches to a DeSales opponent during Saturday's softball double-header against the Irish in Walla Walla. The Dayton ladies defeated these tough rivals in both games and will go head to head with TOR this coming Saturday at 10 a.m. in Dayton.

WALLA WALLA - Winter continues to hold Southeast Washington in its grasp, with snow flurries and hail bombarding the Touchet Valley early this week, but the rain held off and the sun peeked through just enough over the weekend for local teams to hit the fields.

And a great weekend it was for the Lady Bulldogs, who took two wins from their DeSales rivals on their own home field in Walla Walla on Saturday.

In the opener, Dayton played in fits and starts, scoring two runs in the second inning. The Irish caught up and held a 2-point tie with Dayton all the way to the fifth inning, when the Lady Dawgs pulled away.

Dayton's Miwa Umeda, Nicole Lambert, Kayla Turner, Malia Frame and Jessica Tate brought the heat to this chilly, wind-swept game, making eight hits and scoring five more runs before the end of the game.

Though DeSales ran with zero errors, they couldn't keep up with the Lady Bulldogs and scored just two more runs during the first game. Dayton's defense, led by pitcher Turner and catcher Umeda, kept the Irish at bay. The final score was 7-4.

In game two, the Dayton ladies really hit their stride, quickly outpacing the Irish with three runs in the first inning to DeSales' one. After allowing a second run in the second inning, the Lady Bulldogs didn't allow DeSales any more points on the board.

Playing catcher again was Umeda. Sam Harting took the pitching mound.

On offense, Harting made one hit along with Rowene Huwe, Umeda and Shelby Smith. Turner scored hits twice.

"It was a successful day in that we got the two wins we needed," said Dayton assistant coach Desirae Jones. "It was a little rough at times, but considering our varsity had not played since March 31st, I think our girls did a great job. We will really be getting into a lot of games in the next few weeks, so we will have the opportunity to smooth out a few areas of our game."

Dayton softball played Mac-Hi JV Wednesday afternoon, with one varsity and one JV game.

They play their next league game in Dayton on Saturday against TOR at 10 a.m.
