Bulldogs Lose Fight With DeSales Irish On Saturday

April 21, 2011

Dayton junior Joey Schlachter dashes off to first base after connecting with the ball during Saturday's opener against DeSales in Walla Walla.

WALLA WALLA - If Dayton's success last week against Tri-Cities Prep represented the perfect baseball games, Saturday's double- header defeat at the hands of the Irish in Walla Walla was a mirror opposite.

"I told the kids going in - if we don't make any mistakes, we can beat these guys," said Dayton head coach Sal Benavides.

But in game one, the Bulldogs committed five errors, costing them big.

"We had one sequence with three errors," Benavides said. "I had to go out there and tell them, 'You guys are so much better than you're showing.'"

The young men started out on even ground, keeping the scores tied into the fourth inning. Then the errors began, and DeSales took a big lead in the fifth inning, finally taking the game one victory at 8-3.

"Colton (Bickelhaupt) pitched a heck of a game," Benavides said. Joey Schlachter was Bickelhaupt's counterpart behind home plate.

At bat, the successful hitters were Wyatt Frame, Lowden Smith, Schlachter and Logan Hays.

"Freshman Logan Hays knocked in two of our three runs, and he's the last batter in the line-up," Benavides said, expressing pride in this newcomer to the game.

In the second match, De- Sales was on fire and took a 12-1 victory over the Bulldogs.

"We just didn't recover after the first game," Benavides said.

This time freshman Lowden Smith pitched with Schlachter continuing as catcher. The two hits in the second game were courtesy of Smith and Garret Turner.

The Bulldogs are now 2-2 in the league. They play their next league game Saturday in Dayton with a double-header against TOR starting at 2 p.m. after the softball games finish.
