Dr. Carol Clarke, the district's superintendent, said she is...

Here we gather and talk, share photos, listen to old takes, play and sing for each before moving the party to Liverpool Lil's restaurant and Bar, for more cocktails, appetizers and a fresh seafood dinner. This year it's a Cajun blackened Thanksgiving turkey dinner and although I know there are some people who wouldn't eat another green bean casserole, it's my job to give back this piece of American, to guests topped in homemade roasted onion rings. As far as I can remember, once a year my parents loaded us kids into the station wagon and we'd rive into Napa Valley to purchase two cases of wine. Both wines from the original Charles Krug winery; a pink Rose and a case of blonde Chablis. As I recall, these wines were chilled and served to...

The council did not vote on the budget last Wednesday, but it may approve it at the next meeting on Dec. 14. WAITSBURG - A phone call from Waitsburg resident Laura Jean Hevel's distant relative put responsibility in her hands that she never thought she would have. That phone call was from Hevel's grandmother's first cousin twice removed, Gail Parsons of Elma. Parsons had been the keeper of the family history, including letters from a very significant ancestor. And Parsons wanted Hevel to have some of her artifacts. Now, she is the keeper of letters and artifacts from her ancestors and has collected...
Each year, I make my own door wreath of recycled materials collected throughout the year on treks across the Great Northwest. For instance, this year's wreath is to be composed of old grape vines clipped in spring from Pepper Ridge Winery. The twine from a visit to a Napa Cheese Maker. The grapes and leaves are from a discarded wine display found while attending last year's Aspen Winter Food Fest, and the satin ribbon, something I bought at a Dayton community yard sale. "Now, where's my scissors?" Over the weekend I sampled a new Bordeaux of...

CITY LEAF BIN AVAILABLE TO CITIZENS WAITSBURG - The City of Waitsburg has a leaf bin available for citizens to put their leaves in down at the City Shop. It's available Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The city asks that people not push their leaves out into the street as it makes sweeping more time consuming for our public works crew. The city also notes that the railroad is going to be doing work on the crossing on Mill Race road, adjacent to the old mill site on Wednesday, Nov. 16, and the road will be closed that day. MEMORIAL...
To the Editor, Not surprisingly, the bond to fund the Coppei Creek levy improvements failed. You might wonder why with my being an owner of two properties in the designated flood zone of Waitsburg, I would vote against it. In short, because it was not a part of a comprehensive flood plan. I was one of only five community members who attended the meeting that the Army Corps of Engineers held to inform Waitsburg residents about the proposed Coppei levy improvements. The information I gleaned from this meeting was that while we could spend, with m...
DAYTON - Dayton's Betty Ann Fletcher and Elaine Hudson were nearly speechless last Thursday night when they were announced as the 2011 Citizens of the Year by the Dayton Chamber of Commerce. The women could barely squeak out that they were honored after being hugged and cheered on by their family and friends in the community who had attended the chamber's 65th banquet at the Columbia County Fairgrounds. Roslyn Edwards, whose husband Steve won the award last year, presented on his behalf and...
