Ten Years Ago May 18, 2001 In this issue, the community is reminded to turn back the clock on one page, while on another page a rare photo of the fire of 1911, which consumed Mosgrove's general store and the barber shop next door marks past events. On the print the Peririne-Jonas Hardware building, now the home of Waitsburg Hardware and Mercantile, the J.W. Morgan building and others along the west side of the block can be seen. Here comes fall and the promise of change. Today I watched the leaves from my maple tree fall to the ground while "Gary Cooper," the gentleman kitty, stopped skittering around the yard just long enough to say, "welcome to my world," bat the catnip and lavender into oblivion and chase a squirrel into the pines! At our local wineries, Fall Release is nearing: November 4-6. But I am not waiting for the crowds, it's my cookbook editor's birthday, so I drove out to Pepper Bridge Winery, Walla Walla for a gift of wine. Winemaker, Jean Francois is...
Ten Years Ago October 18, 2001 A sizable crowd was treated to a thank-you dinner last Saturday at Ye Town Hall, where the American Legion Auxiliary surprised its guests with a few generous donations. The Department of Natural Resources compensated the auxiliary for their efforts making sack lunches at the Lions Cookshack. Gary Berndt, one of the first-incident commanders to arrive in Waitsburg on Sept. 18-stopped by Karen Mohneys to ask if he could "borrow" her pasture, and oh, by the way (did she) know anyone who can whip up 400 lunches by sun...

"I thought it would really change my life," Nobili said. "A different country could open my mind." Nobili is from Magliano Sabina, Italy. He is stoic, quiet and reserved with a little nervous l...

WAITSBURG - For the first time, Dayton and Waitsburg high schools are in a paper war. Both schools are raising money for the American Cancer Society and constructing paper links into long chains to represent each dollar they have raised. The big revealing of the chains is at halftime at the Waitsburg-Dayton football game on Oct. 7 at Waitsburg. Whoever's chain is the longest will win bragging rights for one year. "This has raised school spirit and pride and both schools are earning money for a good cause," said Shannon Turner, the ASB adviser...
DAYTON - Despite great weather, the Columbia County Fair held Sept. 9-11 in Dayton didn't bring in the amount of visitors that organizers had hoped. Overall, ticket sales were about the same as last year, not reaching the 5,000 person goal Laib had described before the fair. Laib said the fair sold more single day passes than season passes and the fair will look at changing the cost structure next year to get...

Driving along Lower Waitsburg road today, I managed to miss a deer, something "Killer," my truck, knows about all too well. "Killer "hasn't gotten the nickname because she's a mild mannered station wagon gone to pick the kids-up from soccer. No, Killer is a bonafide menace to unsuspecting wild life; poor little things. Killer can also be cruel to food. I had a bag of crab apples on the front seat and swerving to avoid the soft eyed Doe, the whole bag of apples flopped onto the floor and rolled out of sight, under the front seat. However, the...

Ten Years Ago October 11, 2001 Long-time Waitsburg Historical Society member Jan Zuger was honored with a bouquet of roses last Monday from the board. Board member Andy Winnett presented the roses to Jan who recently retired from the board. She was a charter member when the group first formed in the 1973 and began restoration of the Bruce Memorial Museum. It seems to be a time of conflicting rights. Letters to the editor refer to the fact that a hunting license is not a license to trespass. Landowners ask that hunters observe property...
