Ten Years Ago November 27, 2001 As we observe Thanksgiving Day, Waitsburg's turkeys are featured in a Say Cheese profile. They have their favorite haunts around town, traveling in a flock that is well-known as a traffic-stopper. Highlights of the Dayton Holiday Kickoff this weekend include: winter fireworks and the first live performance in the newly restored Liberty Theater. Live performances of "The Music Man" will be held throughout the weekend. Waitsburg's greeting the holiday season will be held on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001. Owners Mike and...

CITY LEAF BIN AVAILABLE TO CITIZENS WAITSBURG - The City of Waitsburg has a leaf bin available for citizens to put their leaves in down at the City Shop. It's available Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The city asks that people not push their leaves out into the street as it makes sweeping more time consuming for our public works crew. The city also notes that the railroad is going to be doing work on the crossing on Mill Race road, adjacent to the old mill site on Wednesday, Nov. 16, and the road will be closed that day. • LETTER

    Nov 17, 2011

To the Editor, Not surprisingly, the bond to fund the Coppei Creek levy improvements failed. You might wonder why with my being an owner of two properties in the designated flood zone of Waitsburg, I would vote against it. In short, because it was not a part of a comprehensive flood plan. I was one of only five community members who attended the meeting that the Army Corps of Engineers held to inform Waitsburg residents about the proposed Coppei levy improvements. The information I gleaned from this meeting was that while we could spend, with m...

  • Fletcher, Hudson Win Top Award

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Nov 10, 2011

DAYTON - Dayton's Betty Ann Fletcher and Elaine Hudson were nearly speechless last Thursday night when they were announced as the 2011 Citizens of the Year by the Dayton Chamber of Commerce. The women could barely squeak out that they were honored after being hugged and cheered on by their family and friends in the community who had attended the chamber's 65th banquet at the Columbia County Fairgrounds. Roslyn Edwards, whose husband Steve won the award last year, presented on his behalf and...

  • AMO Art Show Features Discarded Materials

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Nov 10, 2011

WAITSBURG -- Call them the bone yards of the industrial age: old factories, warehouses, stock yards, substations, fabrication shops, foundries. You can find them everywhere, including in our towns right here in the Touchet Valley. Just think about Wait's Mill after it burned or the apple packing plant near the railroad tracks. These structures of the past aren't just empty buildings, hangars or basements. They have an economic biography and a body of work in the form of the products, tools,...

  • Wine & Country Living

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Nov 10, 2011

This weekend, the wineries in our region and around the entire United States, opened their doors, treating folks to wines recently readied by nature for our fall and winter pleasure. It was wonderful to see people bellied-up, eyes trans-fixed, trying to identify the flavor profiles with each swirl and sip. For the wineries, the sight of happy customers walking away, elongated paper wine bags held under their arms, could only mean one thing -- a job well done. Flying Aprons Catering, fortunate to cater Saturday evening's Harvest Luminary at...

  • Crothers In Business 30 Years

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Nov 10, 2011

DAYTON - For Bette Lou Crothers, who as a child moved every year, Dayton is her real hometown. Crothers attended Dayton High School her junior and senior years, married a local boy out of college and has been selling insurance on Main Street for 30 years. Crothers said her family moved often because her parents worked building dams along the Snake River. She attended Central Washington University and always thought she would be an accountant. Instead, she got a job working as an insurance agent...

Broadway in Waitsburg? Yes, and an art colony thrives! I was fortunate to have a front-row seat in the historical Waitsburg Plaza Theatre Saturday night for the Markeeta Little Wolf concert, "The Bitch is Back!" The house was sold-out and what a show it was. Markeeta, the former mayor of Waitsburg, gave all who attended, a musical review to be remembered. I walked away thinking Markeeta's job will never be done in Waitsburg. This woman has such community spirit and has now successfully opened the door to all who only dream of hitting the...

  • Notes From Waitsburg City Hall

    Nov 3, 2011

GARBAGE RATE INFORMATION We are hearing that there has been some confusion about the new garbage rates. Some people think that the $19.70 fee to remove a can is what it costs to have a second can dumped. This is not the case. The $19.70 fee is the fee to terminate service and have BDI physically take away the garbage can and take it back to their building in Pasco. It is not a fee to dump the can. If a customer has one or more cans, they get charged their monthly fee whether they have one can, no can, or multiple cans out. The rate is based on...

  • Waitsburg Gets Ballot-Drop Off Box

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Oct 27, 2011

WAITSBURG - Waitsburg has a new ballot dropoff box by City Hall so voters can save a stamp. Karen Martin, the Walla Walla County auditor, said at last week's council meeting the county would install a secure drop box in time for next month's general election. Eighteen days prior to the election, voters can fill out their ballot and drop it into the box for pickup, saving them the stamp it would take if it was dropped in the mail. The box was installed Friday afternoon. Martin said the drop box is a new alternative to staffing a poll site in...

  • City Looks At Sales Tax For Roads

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Oct 27, 2011

WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg City Council is starting to get documents prepared for the process of taking the idea of a transportation benefit district to the ballot. City Clerk Randy Hinchliffe said there is less and less money for roads and a transportation benefi t district, if approved by the voters, would give the council the ability to collect a small percentage of sales tax to raise money for street improvements. The other option would be for the council to pass a $20 car tab fee, but the council members did not support that idea. If...

  • Monroe Play Offers Insight Into Actress’ Tragic Tale

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 20, 2011

WALLA WALLA -- The set never changes throughout the play. We're always just a breath away from Marilyn Monroe in her sanctum: in her bedroom, in her dressing room, at her makeup table, eavesdropping on her telephone conversations and listening to her innermost thoughts about fame, relationships, sex and acting. From a seat in the Powerhouse Theater balcony watching "Marilyn: Forever Blonde" is like being a fly on the wall in the "sex goddess'" home, while her life flashes before our eyes from...

I was in Berkeley, Calif., this weekend tasting wine in an unusual bottle shop; inside the Berkeley Municipal Utilities Pump House. Today, owner Peter Eastlake operates his, "Vintage Berkeley," inside the historical building. Vintage is a unique emporium, tacked with wines from around the world, all under $25 a bottle. The day I arrived at Vintage, Bay Area wine professional Eric Sothern of Breakaway Wine Company was giving visitors a taste of a Spanish Tempranillo. For the moment, anything imported goes against everything I stand for in the...

  • Fall Cleanup Starts Earlier In Dayton

    Oct 13, 2011

DAYTON - Fall cleanup in Dayton will begin a week sooner than usual, according to Public Works Director Jim Costello. Pickup from the alleys will get underway Nov. 7, starting on the north end of town and work south. All materials must be compostable with garden waste, vines, shrubs and tree and shrub trimmings no larger than 2.5 inches across at the largest end (about the diameter of a pop can). Grass clippings, sod with dirt, rocks, bricks, garbage, roofing, metal, etc. are not acceptable. "If we come by and your items are not out, we will...
