    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Sep 15, 2011

DAYTON - Tucked away behind a barn and a race track at the Columbia County Fairgrounds, whiskers, floppy ears and cold noses were making kids and judges smile. Kittens meowed loudly from their cages, not wanting to be at the fair at all, while dogs rolled in the grass, sniffed other dogs and left "presents" for their owners to clean up. Dayton's 121st fair that ran Friday through Sunday incorporated traditional elements like 4-H and FFA kids showing sheep, cows and hogs, a long line at noon Satu...

The fire fueled by brisk southwest winds, moved to Rocky Point-Jasper Mountain, across Whiskey Creek and was headed for the Bundy Hollow area. While rescuers dug in perilous rubble 2,700 miles away, worshippers attending the service on the lawn of the Bruce House dug into their pockets and gave $1,350 for the victims of the terrorist attack on New York. Last night, looking out over the front pines, I noticed the most unusual moon; a pie shape cut directly in half with rippling blue vines like a half wheel of gorgonzola cheese! I took my glass of wine out to the patio table and sat for what might be the last time for the season; have you noticed -- it's getting a little chilly in the evenings. Wine of the week: Cougar Crest '08 Viognier, created by Winemaker, Deborah Hansen. This estate bottle is considered a dry white but I find it to be soaked in oodles of semisweet properties; lush floral...

Buffalo for the Fall Festival didn't always come as rolled roasts. Lion's members once made the trek to Montana to bring home the animals. The plan worked well until one decided he didn't like Whoop em Up Hollow and went over the hill to a...

  • Waitsburg’s All In The Family

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Sep 8, 2011

WAITSBURG - I've been in town now about 20 days. You may have noticed a young woman walking down the sidewalk on Main Street, smiling ear to ear. For many, it's a shock that a 25-year-old would want to move to the tiny town of Waitsburg. The truth is, the moment I stepped foot on Main Street last May, I wanted to live here. And about three months later, here I am. I am blessed to have family in Walla Walla, but I also have many family members to be living right here in Waitsburg. The Henze famil...

This past Saturday, I attended the opening of the long awaited Mace Mead Works in downtown Dayton. Upon entering the facility, you'll pass the glassed-in cellar room, racked in oak wine barrels. At first, I thought this was mead wine, but later found owner Reggie Mace' sucking up barrel tasting from his maiden red wine collection, listed on the brochure from his second label; The Mortal Vintner. This collection includes three rich reds, all 100 percent pure andunique,winesnamedcrazy-young,justlikeownerandwinemaker ReggieMace...

The state is not providing as much money as in past years to the program and the figures are calculated based on how much real estate tax is collected in the county, said Columbia County Treasurer Audrey McLean. The county will receive about $150,000 less than expected, and Dayton will receive $9,600 less than anticipated. McLean said the money benefits the c...

  • “One Of The Best Years”

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Aug 18, 2011

WAITSBURG - Despite losing four combines to accidental fires in the past week, despite dealing with lodged grain and some rust, and despite the prospect of losing some hired help from students and teachers going back to school soon, grain growers in the Touchet Valley aren't complaining about this year's harvest.
