  • Feds Seek To Indict First Pot Suspect

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 22, 2011

DAYTON - Federal authorities have asked a grand jury to indict the first of three suspected marijuana growers arrested earlier this summer in the Umatilla National Forest, according to the Columbia County Prosecutor's Office. If successful, the grand jury request would take the case against Mexican national Santiago Orozco Contreras out of the state court system and place it on a federal docket, possibly leading to a much longer sentence for the suspect arrested during a raid on federal land in...

  • Waitsburg School District To Restrict Cell Phone Use

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 22, 2011

WAITSBURG - Sometime during the past school year, a student approached Dr. Carol Clarke about an offensive text message the girl received on her cell phone. Clarke asked if the student recognized the number. She did not, so Clarke asked her permission to try the number and when she did, another student answered his phone in class and the mystery was solved. Clarke called in the caller's parents, informed them about the incident and the parents took the phone away. If the Waitsburg School Board adopts a proposed new policy regarding the use of...

  • Lady Cards Fall To Asotin

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Sep 22, 2011

ASOTIN -- The WP Lady Cardinals lost a league match in three games to the towering Asotin Panthers last Thursday night. The Cardinals started off on the right foot scoring first but the Panthers 5'11" senior JaLisa Jose answered with a screaming kill and didn't stop all night. A missed attack attempt from the Cardinals and an Asotin serving ace gave the Panthers a 3-1 lead. But the Panthers would miss its next serve and WP's Dionna Baker and Rhiannon Chapman would contribute back-toback kills for a 5-4 WP lead. The first game continued to be a...

  • Cardinals Dominate Huskies In 50-28 Win

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Sep 22, 2011

ELGIN -- It took a while for the WP Cardinals to shake off that mountain breeze and warm up last Friday night, but they pulled it together and took home another "W" against the Elgin Huskies to improve their record to 3-0 with a 50-28 victory. Cardinals kicked off deep into Husky territory to begin the first half. On the second down of the game, Elgin's Dylan Crouch broke away for a 40-yard run and was looking to score, but Zach Bartlow caught him on the 10-yard line. WP's defense held them to fourth and one, but Crouch pushed through the line...

  • Fullerton Won’t Play Vs. TCP

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 22, 2011

DAYTON - Conventional wisdom holds that nonleague football games don't matter. But they do matter when an official penalizes a key starter so he has to sit out the next game, and that next game is a league game. That's what happened to starting Bulldogs running back/wide receiver Hayden Fullerton during Thursday's game against the Weston- McEwen Tigerscots. In a highly controversial ruling that first went in favor of the Bulldogs, only to be reversed to go against the Dayton team after the head...

  • Dayton Spikes Patriots

    Tracy Daniel, The Times|Sep 22, 2011

DAYTON-The Dayton Lady Bulldogs improved its league record to 3-1 Tuesday night with a victory over the Liberty Christian Patriots. The Bulldogs cruised to a 25-9 victory over the Patriots in game one and was given a run for its money in game two. The Patriots were first to score, but the Bulldogs jumped to a 9-4 lead with a serving ace from Chelsea Wooldridge and failed attack attempts from the Patriots. The Bulldogs unfortunately got too comfortable in their shoes, letting balls drop and missi...

  • Hard Act To Follow

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 22, 2011

DAYTON -- It was a historic week for the two Touchet Valley high school soccer teams. WP had its first tie against a league team since becoming an official program last year. St. George tied the Tigers 2-2 in Spokane on Saturday. The same day, Dayton won a doubleheader against Northport, winning for the first time in its five-year history against another varsity team. The Bulldogs only beat St. George's junior varsity team last year. Dayton beat Northport 2-1 in the first game, then 5-2 in the s...

  • What A Deal: WP’s Season Off To Solid Start

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 22, 2011

WAITSBURG - The first few weeks of WP's cross country running season have gone well for the Cardinals, particularly for Waitsburg High School junior Seth Deal. Deal won the Seaport Invite hosted by Clarkston High School at Beachview Park this weekend, finishing the 5,000-meter course in 15:43. That's an improvement over last year, when he placed second with a time of 16:29. "Seth took a commanding lead in the first part of the race and never looked back," head cross country running coach Joanna...

  • New Pet Shine Has Its Work Cut Out

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 22, 2011

DAYTON - Erin Gibson got her start as a pet groomer when she worked as a receptionist at a veterinarian clinic in a suburb of Portland. She'd always been an animal lover, growing up in a household that bred Labradors, so she couldn't resist sneaking to the back of the clinic where the kennels were. "I fell into it by chance," said Gibson, 28. "I started by helping out giving them baths, clipping their nails, drying them." After about a year, she was busy as a full-fledged groomer at the store...

  • Moving And Crossing Mountains

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 22, 2011

WAITSBURG - Getting tourists and travelers to the state, then across the mountains to eastern Washington will be one of the main goals for the state's new privatesector tourism alliance, its newly appointed director said Friday. "This corner of the world (and state) is a diamond in the rough," said Suzanne Fletcher, who was appointed earlier this summer as the head of the Washington Tourism Alliance. The state Legislature axed the last remaining funding for the government-run state tourism...

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Sep 22, 2011

DAYTON - The Columbia County Health System is asking residents, employees and patients for feedback so it can better serve the community, said Charlie Button, the district's CEO. "We really want to know what they're thinking," Button said. "We want to hear from them and we want to do a better job." The survey, proposed and executed by the district's promotions committee, will run for about three more weeks. • Wine & Country Living

    Judith Henderson, The Times|Sep 22, 2011

Arriving home from a weekend away isn't always so happy. I found my neighbor had lost her beloved "Pearl," The Coon Cat. As the week progressed, I'd hear Sally outside calling randomly for her kitty, her best friend, and it became unnerving, bringing back memories of when my kitty, Shoes The Creek Kitty, disappeared. In the country, you have to realize there are all sorts of predators out and about, and it just might be that the Barn Owl's coo isn't as friendly as we thought! People who don't have pets or know what it is like to lose your best...

The North Coppei Fire started on the North Coppei and burned in a northeasterly direction down into and up out of Wilson Creek, Whiskey Creek, Bundy Hollow and others. Relay For Life was held this weekend for the fifth time in Columbia County, said Cheri Stoker, a staff member and community relations manager lead. • We’ll Miss You, Bill

    Sep 22, 2011

Here are just some of the many stories Waitsburgers shared with us about Bill Thompson: He and my husband were very good friends. He and his first wife moved to town and lived across the street from me. We got very well acquainted. Bill has been part of the family. He was involved in the Masonic Lodge, First Christian Church, was parade marshal in 2004, was Lions Club president in 1977, Lion of the Year in 2000, Commercial Club president in 1982, won the service award in 1988 and was part of the historical society and ambulance board. • Waitsburg Not The Same Without “Buffalo” Bill

The Burg, Guest Column Tom Baker|Sep 22, 2011

Bill Thompson was a good friend. I share that distinction with scores of folks in this community and extending the population to the Palouse. "BillyT" was his vanity plate, but his formal moniker was "Buffalo Bill," because it was largely through his efforts that the annual Lions Buffalo Feed was instituted. He was really tickled when the front page of The Times had the replica of a buffalo nickel with the motto "E Pluribus Thompson." I share some Waitsburg history with him as we both came into...

  • Rain Stays Away From Fall Fest

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Sep 22, 2011

WAITSBURG - It was a day of Victorian fashion, museum tours, buffalo, corn on the cob and Butlers at Waitsburg's Fall Festival on Sunday. The attendance was anything but sparse. The community filled benches and wooden chairs on the front lawn of the Bruce Memorial Museum for a church service. Pastor Mike Ferrians, dressed as though he were from the old west in a long black coat and hat, led the congregants in singing traditional hymns and spoke about an old-fashioned farm tool he had found....
