  • Lady Dogs Win Valley Rivalry In 3

    The Times|Oct 24, 2013

DAYTON - After a week of losses, the Dayton Bulldogs prevailed over their cross-valley rivals, the WP Cardinals in 3, but the Waitburg Prescott team had to go without two of its starters. The Bulldogs won 25-9, 25-8 and 25-17 in a victory head coach Shannon Turner attributed to "better passes, communication, teamwork" and fewer unforced errors which all "gave us another win. Effort was made by all." WP head coach Angie Potts said freshmen Jade Alleman and Taylor Hayes "filled in at middle b...

    Dena Wood, The Times|Oct 24, 2013

WAITSBURG - The Lady Cards bid farewell to their final chance to qualify for post season play with two losses last week. Tuesday's loss against the Bulldogs in Dayton was followed by a loss Thursday in an away game against Asotin. " Both matches have been tough," said Coach Angie Potts. The Asotin Panthers downed the Cardinals in a three set match on the Panther court with scores of 25-11, 25-15, and 25-10. Paige Wood dished out seven kills while making six digs and one block. Enedina Fu...

    Ken Graham, The Times|Oct 24, 2013

MABTON - The WP Cardinals extended their record to 4-1 with a dominating victory over Mabton Friday night on the road. The Cards built up a 26-6 halftime lead before cruising to a 46-8 final score. Quarterback Owen Lanning had a big night, scoring four rushing touchdowns and throwing for a fifth. Running back Chance Leroue had two touchdowns and rushed for a tot...

  • “Gutbuster” a Learning Experience for WP Cross Country

    Dena Wood, The Times|Oct 17, 2013

MILTON FREEWATER - The WP Men's cross-country team placed eighth out of eight teams in the aptly named 5,000 Meter Gutbuster meet at the Milton Freewater Golf Course on Friday. Runners raced through the golf course and around the track before tackling the "gutbuster" of a hill behind the golf course, descending, and heading for the finish. "It was a very tough course, with a big hill with rough footing in many place," said Coach Joanna Lanning. On the women's side, Emily Adams placed 7th ou...

  • Tigers Can’t Stop St. George

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 17, 2013

PRESCOTT - If Friday's game against the St. George Dragons is any indication of the Tigers' playoff chances, the team has made improvements. But the 2-0 loss against the powerful opponent from Spokane also means WP isn't quite there yet. "They were the better team Friday," assistant coach Jay Potts said. "But we have more talent and need to get better results. We played really well." Potts said the Tigers, playing at home, controlled the game for most of its duration. At the half, the game was a scoreless standoff. "It was a back and forth...

  • Jaguars Bounce Lady Cards

    Dena Wood, The Times|Oct 17, 2013

WAITSBURG - Time is running out for the Lady Cards to qualify for the November 2 league tournament, which makes Thursday night's loss to Tri Cities Prep all the more disappointing. "Only four teams qualify for the league tournament," said WP Coach Angie Potts. "We either need to win two and DeSales doesn't win another match, or we need to beat DeSales and force a tie breaker match." The Jaguars took a strong lead in set one of Thursday's match, maintaining it to win the set 25-12. "In the f...

  • Losses Slow Lady Bulldogs

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 17, 2013

DAYTON - The Lady Bulldogs' winning streak came to an end last week with losses against number one Tri Cities Prep and second-place rival Asotin. "This was a tough week for us," head coach Shannon Turner said. "We went five games with both of these teams earlier in the season and only lost by two points in the fifth game. We just didn't go out and play as a team this (past) week." By contrast, Dayton lost to TCP in four sets last Tuesday - 5-25, 21-16 (for Dayton), 10-25 and 21-25, and in three...

  • Cardinals Crunch Bulldogs

    Ken Graham, The Times|Oct 17, 2013

WAITSBURG - Waitsburg Prescott running back Chance Leroue averaged more than 10 yards per carry and scored two touchdowns Friday, as he led the hometown Cardinals to a lopsided 41-7 win over Dayton. Besides gaining 135 yards on 13 rushes, Leroue also caught one pass for 11 yards. WP quarterback Owen Lanning added 62 yards on five keepers and scored two TDs of his own. Taking advantage of multiple Bulldog turnovers, the Cardinals racked up five touchdowns in the first half, going to the...

  • Bulldogs Runners Push Limits

    Dena Wood, The Times|Oct 10, 2013

DAYTON -Coach Dan Nechedom says he tends to avoid setting early expectations for his Bulldog cross- country team since his is such a small and ever-changing team. Unsure of just who was going to turn out until the season actually began, Nechedom is pleased with his team of five: three girls and two boys. "I have a fun group of tough-minded runners," said Nechedom, noting that abilities vary widely when it comes to speed and endurance. "With most of the team fairly new to racing, they co...

  • WP X-C Looks to Dist. and State

    Dena Wood, The Times|Oct 10, 2013

WAITSBURG - Coach Joanna Lanning admits that her initial expectations for the WP boys' cross-country team where relatively low, especially as compared to last years' successful season. Of the five runners -- the bare minimum required to qualify as a team -- only E.J. Meserve was a seasoned runner, and he had yet to run to his potential. Meserve is joined by junior Tyler Shafer, who has never before competed in X-C and three freshmen: Kyle Gradwohl, Jared Farley and Skylar Wood. "Out of t...

  • Bulldogs Take Lumps From St. Johns

    The Times|Oct 10, 2013

SPOKANE - Dayton came up against a state- championship quality team in St. George in Spokane Saturday. The bulldogs put up a good fight, but fell 9-0. "St. George jumped out to a couple of early scores but our team settled in and played much stronger in the middle of the game," Dayton Coach DJ Frame said. "What was encouraging as a coach, was to see our team stick to the game plan, work hard and improve over the course of the game." Frame said he asked the team to play hard to the end. "They did that without question," he said. "I was very...

  • WP defeates Dayton 8-0

    Oct 10, 2013

  • Tigers Improve v. Boardman

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 10, 2013

BOARDMAN - Sometimes, a loss can be the next best thing to a win, particularly if it's a better loss than the last time. The WP Tigers could not prevail in their second matchup against Riverside in Boardman, but they performed much better than earlier in the season faced with the best team they'll play all season, assistant coach Jay Potts said about Friday's 3-1 loss against the Pirates. "It was a fun game to watch and be a part of," Potts said. "Riverside is the best team we'll see all year. We held our own." The Pirates scored first in the...

  • Lady Cards Fall to DeSales in Five Sets

    Dena Wood, The Times|Oct 10, 2013

WAITSBURG - The abundance of school spirit on display at Thursday night's volleyball match at home against DeSales wasn't quite enough to push the Lady Cards on to a win, though they came close. WP lost to the Irish in a well- fought five-set match. The outlook was promising in set one, with WP taking the lead early on and maintaining it to win by eight, with a score of 25-17. DeSales took advantage of missed serves from WP in set two, winning with a score of 25-22. In set three it was D...

  • Lady Bulldogs on a Roll

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 10, 2013

DAYTON - It was a good week for the Dayton Bulldogs volleyball team. The girls beat Walla Walla Valley Academy on Thursday, after cruising to victory over the DeSales Irish last Tuesday. "Everyone has been contributing, which has paid off for us with wins," head volleyball coach Shannon Turner said. "These girls have really stepped the last three matches which has made a big difference." Dayton won at home against DeSales in straight sets, 25-21, 25-20 and 25- 12. Madison Mings had 13 k...

  • Cardinals Rock DeSales

    Ken Graham, The Times|Oct 10, 2013

WALLA WALLA - The Waitsburg-Prescott Cardinals invaded Irish country Friday night and racked up six touchdowns on the way to a 42-20 victory over DeSales. Three rushing TDs by Chance Leroue, two keepers by quarterback Owen Lanning and a James Thompkins reception late in the game paced the cards to their dominating win. "The big play was the TD right before the half to go up 29-6," said Bartlow. "That made a huge difference, and scoring before half has proven to be a huge factor in win...

  • Smith has Big Game in Loss

    Ken Graham, The Times|Oct 3, 2013

WALLAWALLA-Behind a phenomenal performance by running back Lowden Smith, the Dayton Bulldogs held their own against DeSales Friday night, losing 35-13 on the road. Smith piled up 300 yards rushing on 43 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also had two pass receptions for 18 additional yards and, to top it off, kicked an extra point. Smith also played the whole game on defense at middle linebacker. "He played every single down," on offense and defense," Coach Dean Bickelhaupt said of Smith....

  • Bulldogs split with Trout Lake

    Ken Graham, The Times|Oct 3, 2013

DAYTON - Dayton's standout forward Ian Smay scored four goals Saturday as the Bulldogs won the second of a pair of weekend matches against Trout Lake in Dayton. The Mustangs broke out to a 2-0 lead before the Bulldogs made their comeback. "It was rewarding to see the team continue to play hard throughout the game and come back from a deficit," said coach DJ Frame. "They are believing in themselves. We were able to keep a fast paced game due to our subs." Forward Roy Han had one goal and an...

  • Dayton Soccer Makes Big Strides

    Ken Graham, The Times|Oct 3, 2013

DAYTON - Now in his seventh year as Dayton's first soccer coach, DJ Frame is beginning to reap some rewards for his efforts. "Our players are learning to control the ball better," Frame said. So far this year, much of Dayton's offense has come from forwards Ian Smay and Roy Han. Smay and Han each scored hat tricks (three goals in one game) in the Bulldogs' victory over Northport in September. Smay had four more goals in a 5-2 victory over Trout Lake on Saturday in Dayton. Han, an exchange stude...

  • Tigers Can’t Get Past St. George

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Oct 3, 2013

SPOKANE - A team might win some games and lose some games, but as long as there's progress underneath it all, there's always a reason to be optimistic. That's the conclusion Jay Potts, assistant coach of the Waitsburg Prescott Tigers, drew after this past week's three games that put the soccer team's record about where it was last year at this time. On Thursday, the Tigers beat the Irigon, Ore., Knights 4-1 on that team's home turf. They lost in a tough game against St. George in Spokane 6-2 Saturday and roared back with a 6-0 win over Moses...

Also making PRs at the Dayton Meet were: Skylar Wood 20:37.05, Jared Farley 20:38.68 and Tyler Shafer 21:02.33. Emily Adams finished third among 3...

    Dena Wood, The Times|Oct 3, 2013

WAITSBURG - The Dayton Bulldogs and the WP Cardinals battled it out on Waitsburg's court Thursday evening with the Dogs taking a win in three straight sets. Both teams were recovering from losses on the 24th, the Bulldogs losing two five set games to Asotin and the Cardinals losing to Tri Cities Prep. "It was good to win in three after two league losses in five games, by two points!" said Bulldog coach Shannon Turner. WP's freshman-dominated team struggled against the added challenge of pla...

  • Bringing It All Together

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 26, 2013

PRESCOTT - Some coaches worry about having enough players to field a team for the season. But that's not Mark Grimm's challenge. He could field two if he had to. The WP Tigers' head soccer coach starts the season with 26 athletes on the roster, including six freshmen and some seven talented forwards/ strikers, giving him plenty of firepower up front. What he doesn't have yet is a solid shield in the back, or a team that has brought together its diverse playing styles into a cohesive syst...

  • WP Gridders Succumb to Maniacs

    Ken Graham, The Times|Sep 26, 2013

OROFIO, Ida. - "First of all, this was a quality team we played," WP football coach Jeff Bartlow said of the Orofino Maniacs, after his Cardinals suffered a tough 50-20 loss Friday night on the road in Idaho. Bartlow said the coaching staff tried to prepare their team by showing film of the Orofino squad. "Our kids realized it, but did not maybe believe it until the game started and they saw how athletic they were," Bartlow said. "They flew around on defense and made plays." After the Maniacs...

  • Panthers Bite Bulldogs 40-0

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 26, 2013

ASOTIN - For a while, it all went as well as it could for the 15-man Dayton Bulldogs squad against a tough opponent playing on home turf near the west bank of the Snake River. "It was back and forth," head coach Dean Bickelhaupt said about his team's game against the Asotin Panthers Friday. "We were shutting them down (offensively)." But with a little more than 4 minutes on the clock before the end of the first half, the Panthers broke out of their cage and went on a rampage, clawing up 20 points and leaving the Bulldogs feeling shr...
