WAITSBURG - A room full of more than a dozen three-to-five-year-olds can be daunting, even when you don't have a camera. Last week when a photographer showed up, almost all of the kids at the Waitsburg Parent Cooperative preschool let it be known that they were thrilled to have their pic- tures taken. When teacher Cara Watts suggested they break out the blocks, the exuberant tower builders got busy, and then stood proudly next to their works of art. "My kids aren't shy," she said. The preschool...

This week I come to you on an inside page, as I wish to talk brief- ly about Waitsburg and its schools. A couple of weeks ago, I visited Dr. Carol Clarke in her office at Waitsburg el- ementary school to talk with her about a talk she gave at the Commercial Club dinner in Waitsburg last month. Clarke is the superintendent of schools and also serves as principal for the elementary school. Toward the end of our conversation, we got off onto the subject of cookie dough, and how a group of...

The WHS student body took its annual ski trip last Thursday. I am told that they had quite the time. I didn't go with them. I am officially bored of the bunny hill, but the chairlifts scare me half to death. (I'm not afraid of heights, but heights without a seatbelt is another matter entirely.) So I, along with 32 other students, stayed behind at the school. We didn't even bother with normal classes. Instead, at the start of school, we were all called to the auditorium. A head count was conducted. (It didn't take too long, needless to say.)...
WAITSBURG - At 18 years old, Thibault Marti- nelle is already a seasoned traveler, having visited most of Europe, including France, England, Ireland, Turkey, Italy and Spain, as well as U.S. visits to Florida and Connecticut. Still, leav- ing his home in Waterloo, Belgium to spend the school year in Waitsburg as an ex- change student has been a "one-of-a-kind" experience. Waterloo, with a popula- tion roughly that of Walla Walla, is not a particu- larly large city, but sizeable enough that...
"A lways make ethi- cal decisions", was the main focus of the presentation delivered by two representa- tives of the Better Business Bureau February 7 at the Farm Forum in Spokane. Nineteen Waitsburg FFA members boarded a bus ear- ly in the morning and headed to the Agricultural Expo- sition, a three-day event held at the Spokane Convention Center. Thursday was "FFA Day, which meant numer- ous chapters from all over Eastern Washington came together to listen to speakers and learn about...
I magine leaving the larg- est city in the world and journeying halfway around the globe to live in a rural town of 1,200. That's precisely what Chao Lei Dai experienced when she left Shanghai, China (pop. 23 million), to spend the school year as a foreign exchange student in Waitsburg. I was delighted to spend some time talking with the charming Chao Lei, who uses Cherry as her American moniker, about life in our country. The desire to experience the American lifestyle goes back a generation...

None are exempt from experiencing hardship. As Helen Keller so aptly stated, "All the world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming." In my experience, "overcoming" happens most quickly when we realize that we are not alone. Assuring people that they are loved, cared for and most of all not alone, is what the Waitsburg Prayer Shawl Ministry is all about. Initiated by Joan Helm and sponsored by the First Christian Church, the Prayer Shawl Ministry began in the fall of 2009. Helm, a...

The boys, half from Day- ton and half from Waits- burg, meet weekly to gain knowledge in a variety of merit badge categories and practice leadership, teamwork and survival skills. WAITSBURG - While many cities scramble to keep up with ever-tightening Department of Ecology standards, Waitsburgers can rest easy knowing city offi- cials are proactively seeking out grant money to improve the efficiency of the city's wastewater treatment plant. Waitsburg city admin- istrator Randy Hinchliffe presented the Community Development Block Grant application for discussion at the Waitsburg City Council meeting Jan.16. I have a cousin who lives in a big city. There, she tells me, finals are heavily- standardized tests that take place outside the classroom and are so brain-draining that days are given off from school for the purpose of the post-finals mental recupera- tion of the student body. Here in Waitsburg of course, finals are simply unusually long tests given on the last two days of each semester. (A few super-orga- nized teachers do a quarterly final as well.) And far from being stan- dardized exams, Wa...
WAITSBURG - For Waitsburg High School senior Seth Deal, shoes are essential; so hearing that a billion children live in poverty and many don't have shoes was a shock. Deal is a runner, and his passion for running drove him to focus on running shoes for the research portion of his senior project. When he thought about a charity to work with for his project, he thought a shoe drive would be a good cause to dedicate his time to. Deal said when he learned about Soles4Souls, it seemed like a perfect...
