  • Zero-waste leads to contentment for former Mayor

    Tracy Thompson, the Times|Jan 23, 2020
    1

Markeeta Little Wolf's journey to a zero-waste lifestyle actually started with a million steps. The former Waitsburg Mayor and City Council member happened to read on Pinterest (her only social media vice, she claims) about the Million Step Challenge. The idea was to walk 10,000 steps in 100 days - for a total of one million steps, or 500 miles of walking (dancing, cooking, cleaning, etc.) However, even that challenge wasn't daunting enough for her, she decided to clock a million steps in just...

  • Still in the soup – just add bread!

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, the Times|Jan 23, 2020

It's still January and gloomy, so I'm still in soup mode. I continue to stare at my Instant Pot, while trying to muster up the courage to use it, but right now, I'm sticking to my stock pot. However, here's an interesting anecdote to my Instant Pot saga. When Daniel, (the chef), was here over the holidays, he used the Instant Pot to make tomato sauce. While it was venting, the steam coated the cabinet door. Being "clean as we cook" people, he rubbed down the cabinet with a kitchen towel, and...

  • Volunteers and donations from the community keep the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul alive in Dayton

    Michele Smith, the Times|Jan 23, 2020

DAYTON-If you are looking for gently used clothing, appliances, furniture, toys and games, jewelry, books, appliances, and much more, you don't have to look much further than the St. Vincent de Paul retail store on Dayton's Main Street. Store manager Bob Patras said the store has been open for about forty years, and thrives thanks to the many volunteers, monetary donations, and the donated items, which come from communities as far away as the Tri-Cities and Walla Walla. The store also benefits...

  • Combine Art Collective

    Brianna Wray, the Times|Jan 23, 2020

WALLA WALLA-When artists join forces, good things happen for everybody. An example of this idea at work is Walla Walla's Combine Art Collective (CAC), a collaborative effort to exhibit and sell fine art in an approachable way. Not only do fifteen artists benefit from the proximity of other creatives, their work can be exhibited and shared with a wider audience, increasing the likelihood of finding collectors, but the community gains a cultural hub and a lovely evening out. Their most recent...

  • Budget talk dominates Dayton school board meeting

    Dave Schreindl, the Times|Jan 23, 2020

The number one issue facing the school board continued to be the oversight of the monies collected from previous levies and how they are spent on various prioritized projects. And accordingly, how they are being held accountable to the public for the choices they make. At its January monthly meeting Superintendent Doug Johnson presented an update regarding the 2016 and 2018 capital project levies. He said over $1.5 million will have been collected by October 2020 in order to address various facilities issues. As of the end of 2019, the asphalt...

    Beka Compton, the Times|Jan 16, 2020

WAITSBURG- Lisa Morrow and Tracy Barron aren't afraid of anything. From horses to hunting, they both have active families that keep them on their toes. Last April they volunteered to take a group of local teenagers to Washington D.C, confirming that there is no task too daunting for the pair. They have spent the better part of a year helping students from Dayton and Waitsburg reach an overall fundraising goal of more than $100,000 to take a once in a lifetime trip to our Nation's Capital. Last...

  • Telepsychiatry now available at Blue Mountain Counseling

    Michele Smith, the Times|Jan 16, 2020

DAYTON-The ability to deliver quality behavioral health services to southeastern Washington communities just got a boost when Blue Mountain Counseling of Columbia County, added telepsychiatry to its treatment protocol. "This started because none of our counselors are credentialed high enough to prescribe medications if warranted. Adolescents under the age of thirteen aren't being served through some of the other services provided in the community, and we felt this was a good place to start,"...

  • Talk about Art

    Carolyn Henderson, the Times|Jan 16, 2020

Some people are observant, and others . . . not so much. For an artist, it helps to NOT be in the "not so much" category. "I have always loved detail," says Walla Walla acrylic painter Mary Soper. "My husband told me once that he really didn't notice things until he married me. I was constantly pointing out unusual or beautiful things to him that attracted my attention." Not only does Soper notice the world around her, she wonders about what she sees. On passing an old pickup truck, abandoned al...

  • Soups, stews and other gloomy day eats

    Vicki Sternfeld-Rossi, the Times|Jan 16, 2020

It's these gloomy, overcast days that put me in the mood to cook stews or make a big pot of soup, with homemade bread. It could be ten degrees below zero with three feet of snow on the ground, but if the sun is out, I'll eat a salad. Sun and salads go together, this is probably still Los Angeles' influence on me. We've had plenty of gray days lately, and I know there a more to come. Also, it's January, when many of us have pledged to lose weight, go to the gym, eat healthier and other "take...

  • Streaming Review: the Mandalorian

    Brianna Wray, the Times|Jan 16, 2020

If you grew up with a Boba Fett-ish like my husband, the futuristic space western, the Mandalorian, is the show to end all shows. It is to be expected that fans of the original Star Wars trilogy would be on board for another saga. Where the Mandalorian truly succeeds is that it is just as entertaining for someone new to the galaxy. The art direction team combines stark landscapes, impressive costumes and special effects with a howling flute that alludes to the winds of change in a meaningful...

  • Trash in the past

    Tracy Thompson, the Times|Jan 16, 2020

Burn it, bury it or dump it. Or let the pigs eat it. Those used to be the options for refuse disposal at the turn of the last century. It wasn’t until 1896 that New York City required residents to separate household waste, food waste in one tin, ash in another, and dry trash in a bag or bundle. Back then it was estimated that each American produced 80-100 pounds of food waste, 50-100 pounds of rubbish, and 300-12000 pounds of wood or coal ash. Small and medium sized towns built piggeries where swine were fed fresh or cooked garbage. One e...

  • More than a crown

    Beka Compton, the Times|Jan 16, 2020

If you've ever attended the Waitsburg Celebration Days parade, there's no doubt you've seen the young ladies donning crowns and waving atop their horse. While smiling and waving is at the top of the list, a rodeo queen's duties go far beyond the parade route. A rodeo queen's reign lasts for a year, give or take a month or so. They act as ambassadors for their event, their community, and the sport of rodeo in its entirety. When they aren't on horseback, they can be found speaking about their...

  • Celebration Days Queen coronation dinner takes place on January 25

The Waitsburg Celebration Days Queen's Coronation is quickly approaching, and will take place at Town Hall on January 25th. Lena's year began the first weekend in December, during Waitsburg's Hometown Christmas. After her coronation, she will travel from Asotin to Joseph, and Pendleton to Lewiston, promoting not only Waitsburg Celebration Days, but the...

  • Colorful winter break at the Cardinal's Nest

    Beka Compton, the Times|Jan 9, 2020

WAITSBURG-The last few days of winter break are their own kind of limbo. Kids are starting to wake up from the holiday-induced comas, parents are going back to work, and babysitters are seemingly hard to find. The Cardinal's Nest Art Program came up with a solution, though: two days of art projects at the elementary school. Kathy Schirm, who coordinates the art portion of the afterschool program, secured space and supplies, as well as ample treats, for the students last Thursday and Friday....

  • Waitsburg joins other cities facing limited recycling options

    Tracy Thompson, the Times|Jan 9, 2020

City sponsored recycling ended for Waitsburg in March of 2018. The service had been offered by Basin Disposal, Inc. the city's garbage service contractor, but due to a large price increase, the City Council opted to stop offering the service. Customers had grown reliant on the service, offered at the wastewater treatment plant, which accepted paper, cardboard and plastics, until changes in the Chinese marketplace drove the costs up. In 2017, Basin Recycling hauled 11.7 tons of recycling from...
