  • “A Party, Indeed”

    Dena Wood, The Times|Jun 20, 2013

PRESCOTT - An au- dience filled with Mylar balloons, colorful floral bouquets and excited chatter made for a party-like atmo- sphere in Prescott High's gymnasium Thursday night as smiling seniors leaned over the mezzanine, scan- ning the crowd of friends and family below. Prescott High's 2013 graduation cer- emony was most definitely going to be a celebration. Prescott High's 22 gradu- ating seniors entered by twos, taking measured steps to the traditional strains of "Pomp and Circumstance."...

[Editor's Note: Besides teaching English at Touchet High School and being a contributing writer for The Times, Shauna Fletcher is an accomplished actress and stars this summer in WWCC Foundation's production of "The Music Man" at the Fort Walla Walla Amphithe- ater.] "Y ou're not listen- ing, Marian!" Harold Hill whispers to me, "Look!" Only we both know I'm listening intently. Because in actuality, I'm waiting for my cue to move to center stage; and Harold Hill is really actor and director...

  • Dena Wood: Out & About

    Jun 20, 2013

DAYTON - As I drove my boys up to do some volunteer work at Camp Touchet last week, I realized that many locals may be unaware of this gem right in our very own Touchet Valley. Camp Touchet is a wooded retreat just ten minutes south of Dayton, on the road to Ski Bluewood. Covered in mountain pine and fir, with the North Fork of the Touchet River running through it, this 80 acre oasis has all the amenities necessary for a peaceful retreat, without truly roughing it, unless you want to, of... Full story

    The Times|Jun 20, 2013

DAYTON - Approximately 390 cars registered this year for All Wheels Weekend in Downtown Dayton. Committee chair Bette Lou Crothers called the show a “blowout success.” Perfect mid-80s weather greeted the thousands of visitors who watched cruising cars and the band LeadFoot that played on Second Street on Friday night and at the Show-‘n’-Shine on Saturday. The only blemish on this year’s show, according to Crothers, was an abbreviated fireworks show on Friday night. She said the cost of the spe...

  • Third Ryder Cup

    Dan Groom, The Times|Jun 20, 2013

DAYTON - The Ryder Cup. A golf tradition unlike any other. Who could forget the Battle at Brookline in 1999, where the Americans rallied from four matches down on the final day to win? Or the equally impressive Miracle at Medinah in 2012, where Europe overcame a 10-4 deficit at the halfway point to win by a full match? And Dayton's amazing Take- down at Touchet Valley in 2011? Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the Ryder Cup is back-the local version. And instead of pitting teams of professional golfers from the United States and Europe, this Ryder Cup... Full story

  • Judith Henderson’s Wine & Country Living

    Jun 20, 2013

I moved to eastern Washington twelve years ago. At first I was doubtful I would be able to raise citrus in "Zone 4," but I gave it a try and was surprised to find that, with a little effort, I now harvest twenty pounds of citrus fruits each year from my patio plants. I raise citrus on the patio where presumably the juice flows from fruit to kitchen. I have been successful raising chubby lemons and tight kaffir limes for Thai dishes in roll-a-way pots. In my earth-to-table style of cooking, citrus is an important food where a bit of tangy... Full story

  • CROPS

    Gary Hofer, The Times|Jun 20, 2013

New four-week low prices printed at all three major wheat futures exchanges Monday, but there was little pressure to follow through. Tuesday allowed a little bounce back up with no major news influence to account for it. The wheat market shadow is moving across the landscape slowly, as the combine crews are about to set up camp in Kansas fields, with Oklahoma running about 20% completed. Initial yields reported from Texas and Oklahoma are average. Weekly export sales for wheat were reported Monday in line with expectations. White wheat markets...

  • The Tomidget Saga

    Jun 20, 2013

When I started two tomatoes from seed who-knows- how-many weeks ago, both seeds sprouted and grew into healthy plants. The only difference was that one plant grew very quickly - its stem stretching proudly towards the sky - and the other plant, while very green and vi- brant, stayedhellip;well, small. I kept the two in pots in- side for two months. When the time came to transplant them, the tall plant was push- ing four inches. The smaller plant was two centimeters high, max. I'm serious - that... Full story

  • Building a 21st-Century VA

    Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers|Jun 20, 2013

I t is no secret that veterans are facing difficult times. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) claims backlog has been a problem that has risen to national attention and prompted outrage, concerns and questions. And for good reason. As Americans, we must do everything we can to en- sure that programs and benefits administered by the VA are being done as efficiently and effectively as possible. This includes addressing the growing size of the backlog claims for disability benefits. While President Obama and VA Secretary Eric Shinse- ki...

    Jun 20, 2013

WAITSBUG - They say that, "Behind every good man is a good woman." That statement certainly holds true for the group of women behind Waitsburg's American Legion Post #35. They strive to live out the club motto, "Service, not self." The Auxiliary consists of mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, granddaughters and great-granddaughters of veterans...
