At the Liberty:"The Brink of War"

DAYTON — In “The Brink of War.” President Ronald Reagan (Jeff Daniels) races to salvage a deal with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev (Jarod Harris) that could dismantle nuclear arsenals. With pressure mounting on all sides, every word spoken brings the world closer to peace or destruction. Rated PG for language, thematic elements, and smoking, with a runtime of 120 minutes.

A RottenTomatoes.com critic wrote, “‘The Brink of War,’ writer-director Michael Russell Gunn chronicles the Reykjavík Summit, offering fascinating historical and political perspectives into the talks, their ultimate collapse, and the shaky trust that grew between the two leaders.” The audience gave a rating of 89% and said, “a subtle, intriguing, breathtaking film with top-tier acting.”

Tickets are now on sale for “The Last Picture Shows” screening on Thursday, September 10 at 7 p.m.

Filmmaker Rustin Thompson journeys into the American West on a search for traces of what was once a center of small-town life: the movie theater. “The Last Picture Shows” is not only a timely portrait of an industry in crisis, one facing the headwinds of consolidation, streaming, and the diminishing theatrical experience, but it also reminds viewers that even in vast cinema deserts, there are oases of community and gathering that remain, where the movie house continues to be a place of wonder, contemplation, and connection. The Liberty Theater and the Milton Freewater Drive-In are included in the film. Tickets are $10 for general admission at libertytheater.org or at the Box Office Tuesday and Friday from 2-5.

“Manhattan Short Film Festival” is bringing 10 films from 10 different countries. On September 25-29, 2026, the Liberty will be one of four theaters in Washington State to show the film festival, when over 100,000 film lovers worldwide, in over 500 cities on six continents, will view and vote on the finalists’ films. All 10 finalists’ films will be shown each night during regular movie times and at regular movie prices. More details to come.
