Fifteen Years Ago

Mandy Kiefel places flowers by the grave of Raymond Leroue, a Vietnam War Veteran who passed away this past year. Leroue was a first cousin of Kiefel's mother, Linda Zavala, here with her nieces, Marisa and Mikele Zavala and Kiefel's daughter Olivia in the stroller.

Scholarship recipient David Brock, a Prescott High School senior, helps out at the Christian Aid Center in Walla Wala with fellow Cardinals Joe Purdin and T. J. Hofer.

Vietnam Veteran Doug Kennedy from Walla Walla was among 200 people who gathered at the Waitsburg Cemetery to observe Memorial Day. Chuck Reeves, Jack McCaw (World War II Veteran), Randy Pearson and Bob Patton lead the crowd in "God Bless America" during Monday's Memorial Day ceremonies.

Josh Wood and Clint Reser won hottest chili cooks for a second year in a row in the Third Annual Waitsburg "One of a Kind" Chili Cook-Off. Second place winner was Two Bobs Chili by Bob Patton and Bob Danforth. Third place was Bolles Junction "Stop a Freight Train" chili by Bob Lee, Dave McConnell and Jack McCaw, and Honorable mention went to Charlie Burrington and Jake Long.

Waitsburg Firemen's Association is giving a sincere 'Thank You' to everyone who supported their scholarship fund project. The generosity is sincerely appreciated and has enabled us to give two scholarships through the Firemen's Memorial Fund.

Fifty Years Ago

June 3, 1976

[Photo Caption] Steve Pierson shows his excellent running form as he performed in the mile relay team at the district meet in Moscow, Idaho, two weeks ago. Steve brought home the first first-place state final medal ever for the Cardinals as he took the event last Saturday in Yakima with a time of 50.7.

The Fenwickian National Guard assembled on stage last week to capture the United States with bows and arrows. Led by David Webber as Bascombe, the warriors were Wes McKenzie, Cecil Largent, Glen Eastwood, Mike Peterson, Walter Miller, and Kevin Davis. The play was well received by an appreciative audience.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

June 8, 1951

To Hollis Conover, 92, the dedication ceremonies at Palouse Falls on June 3 were of unusual significance. Probably the only survivor of the crew that made the original survey of the site in 1876, he stated that there was no appreciable change in the appearance of the magnificent cataract.

One Hundred Years Ago

June 11, 1926

Waitsburg made local history this week when on Tuesday the first car of early cabbage ever shipped from this city moved out over the Northern Pacific R. R.

Vernon Ogden and Henry Roberts of this city were among several boys who left last week for Seattle to take the boat for Alaska. They expect to spend the summer there.

The Anselm (Polk) Highley barn was destroyed by fire Sunday night. The cause of the fire is not known, but the barn had just recently been filled with hay, which was not thoroughly dry, and it is thought that the hay heating probably started the combustion.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

June 14, 1901

John Leinberger arrived home last Friday after an absence of about six months visiting old friends around Albany and Medford, Ore. John gained several pounds in weight while he was away and says he had an excellent trip.
