Benevides at State Golf
Waitsburg High School senior Blake Benevides shot a 110 in the first round at the WIAA 1B/2B Boys High School State Golf Championships at MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake May 20-21.
Coach Caris Lynch said that Benevides missed the cut-off at 95 to proceed to the second round.
Kenney to State Track
Senior Teegan Kenney from Waitsburg High School will compete in all four of his track events at the WIAA 1b/2b/1A State Championships at Eisenhower High School, May 28-30. Kenny qualified for State at the 1B District 6 Championships at Valley Christian School, May 20-22. Athletes had to place in the top five for boys and top six for girls to advance to State.
Kenney placed 5th in the 100 meters with a time of 12.02. Next, he finished 2nd in the 300-meter hurdles with a personal best of 44.77. He was fifth in the long jump with a jump of 19’ 5”, and in the triple jump, his jump of 40’ 1.5” earned him a fourth-place finish.
“Every athlete did a good job of being prepared. There were a few emotional moments when things didn’t happen as planned, but our Cardinals represented their school and community with grace and pride,” said Coach Dan Nechodom.
Following Waitsburg’s achievements, Dayton athletes also had success at Districts.
Rosemary Yutzy placed 2nd in the 100-meter, 2nd in the 400-meter, 1st in the 300-meter hurdles, and ran a leg on the 4x100 relay, which placed first.
Rilee Steinhoff placed 5th in the 100-meter, 6th in the long jump, 3rd in the triple jump, and was on the 4x100 relay with Yutzy, Ellie Sabin, and McKenna McCowen.
