For the first time since the dissolution of the Dayton-Waitsburg football combine, the Bulldogs got their first win over the Cardinals.
"Cody Chapman is a good coach, and he has a solid team. Nonetheless, the game Friday did not reflect the team I think Waitsburg has. We are a young team. We have a level of natural talent. However, our difficulty is consistency and discipline. We had a great week of practice, working on and reinforcing the discipline we can have. Once we figure out how to stay disciplined even under pressure and when bad things happen, we will show what kind of team we really are," said coach Gabe Kiefel.
It was senior night for the two Cardinal Seniors: JJ Gleason and Landen Henry. Gleason passed well, completing 18 out of 29 passes for 354 yards and four touchdowns. Henry caught three passes for eighteen yards and one conversion.
Dayton took the lead in the first quarter as the Cardinals struggled to stop the Bulldogs and finished with a 66-28 win.
Offensively, Uriah York caught 13 passes for 305 yards and scored four touchdowns. Liam Kiefel rounded out the receptions with two catches for 31 yards.
On defense, the Cardinals had some decent defensive performances, though they ultimately gave up too much. Camdyn Vories had 12 tackles, three tackles for loss (TFL), and one sack. York had 11 tackles and one TFL. Alex Zuniga finished with eight tackles, three TFLs, including one sack. Jake Lynch had ten tackles and two TFL.
The Cardinals next game will be at St. John-Endicott on October 16. Kickoff at 7 p.m.
