DAYTON — From Academy Award-winning writer and director Chloé Zhao, “Hamnet” is the story that inspired Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, “Hamlet”. In 16th-century England, Agnes and William Shakespeare grapple with grief after losing their son, Hamnet, to the plague.
A healer, Agnes must have strength to care for their surviving children as she grieves her devastating loss. Jessie Buckley won a Golden Globe for Actress in a Drama Motion Picture and is nominated for an Oscar. She is joined by Paul Mescal as William. It is rated PG-13 for thematic content, some strong sexuality, and partial nudity. Runtime is 125 minutes.
“Hamnet” has positive ratings from critics and the audience on Rotten Tomatoes. With a rating of 86%, the critics said, “Breaking hearts and mending them in one fell swoop, “Hamnet” speculates on the inspiration behind Shakespeare’s masterpiece with palpable emotional force thanks to Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal’s astonishing performances.” An audience member wrote, “Superb acting and cinematography. Engaging story. Memorable all around.” The audience rates “Hamnet” a strong 93%.
