August 31, 2000

Elizabeth Abbey's Uncle Dave Hansen was recently diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a debilitating disease which is commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. To help, Abbey and her friend Katy Pearson rode 80 miles in the ALS Ride 4 Life, held Aug. 18 and 19 in the Skagit Valley and sponsored by the ALS Association Evergreen Chapter. The pair, helped by fundraising efforts of Dave's wife Fran Hansen, raised around $12,000 which helped boost the event's total to $45,766. Abbey's total was also the most raised by an individual and won her a new bicycle. There were 70 riders.

September 4, 1975

The 85th Annual Columbia County Fair opens Friday, September 5th, and will conclude Sunday, September 7th. Fair Hostesses Roseanne Delp, Val Howard, Vicki Jackson and Lazelle Russell Jr. welcome all the three days of fun and excitement. Friday's first day events begin with a free breakfast served by the Columbia County Cattlemen Association followed by Home Economics, 4-H and FFA judging. Department Superintendents promise an interesting display of produce, flowers, canning exhibits, crafts and handwork. The Columbia County Homemakers will display their year's most popular projects with instructions in preparation of their many and varied crafts. At 7:00 p.m. Friday evening there will be a 4-H Horse Show.

September 8, 1950

The Presbyterian Church school will hold a picnic at the city park Sunday.

Enrollment at Waitsburg High School on the opening day was 90, compared to 98 last year. At the grade school, the enrollment totaled 202 students.

The lovely garden of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Leid in Walla Walla was the scene for the wedding on September 2 of Miss Patricia Woodworth and "Mickey" Richard Leid.

Miss Mary Ann Shaffer and Miss Muriel Roberts left Monday by train for Nevada, Mo., where they will attend Cottey Junior College for Girls.

One Hundred Years Ago

September 11, 1925

The Willing Workers of the Methodist Church gave their annual reception for the teachers Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Adams. Mrs. J. W. Morgan served the ices and Miss Gladys Eaton the cake. They were assisted by Misses Ruth Eaton, Naomi Pollard and Isla Hales.

Henry Conover, Dwight Howell, Will Keve and John Barnes returned home Monday night from a couple of days fishing trip over on the Little Joe in the Umatilla Forest reserve.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

September 14, 1900

Miss Johnson, of Portland, arrived in this city this week to accept a position as head trimmer in Mrs. F. M. Scott's millinery parlors. Miss Johnson is said to be exceptionally apt in her line of work.

E. Burnam offers to sell his fine driving team for $200, the purchaser to pay nothing if Bryan is elected. Thus far the offer has not been accepted.

Mrs. H. G. Shuham entertained a large number of friends at an "at home" last Friday afternoon. The ladies report Mrs. Shuham and daughter Florence exceptionally clever entertainers and hope they may be "at home" after.
