Washington winter wheat crop is good, but in need of moisture. The winter wheat crop prospects in Washington are good to excellent. Production forecast is 117.3 million bushels, up 21 percent from last year. Production at this level would place Washington third nationally behind Oklahoma at 155.8 million bushels and Kansas at 404.8 million bushels. Harvested acreage is estimated at 1.75 million acres, an increase of 5% from last year. Yield is estimated at 67 bushels per acre, 9 bushels more than last year's yield of 58 bushels per acre. Record yield for winter wheat was 70 bushels per acre in 1996. "Recent rains have helped the crop, but additional precipitation will be needed. Heading has begun, which is ahead of both last year and the 5-year average. About 90 percent of the crop is rated as being good or excellent condition," said Doug Hasslen, State Statistician.

Grain Sale Cancellations. The USSR has cancelled an order for 200,000 tons of U.S. corn because of quality problems on shipments already received, and exporters will reportedly supply about 3 million bushels of U.S. wheat after July 1 and quantities of corn from other export markets by September 30 in place of the cancelled business. So far, there has been little progress on the settlement of the 12 million bushel US-Turkey wheat agreement which the Turks want to cancel to avoid paying higher prices under their contract than currently exist in the export market.
