WP's Owen Lanning shows great form in the 110 meter hurdles at Dayton's District 9 league meet on April 1.

MILTON-FREEWATER, Ore. – The WP boys track team took third place Friday at the giant Carnival of Speed track at Shockman Field here. The meet featured schools of all sizes and, among at least 25 participating, WP's point total was surpassed only by the two largest, Wa-Hi and Pendleton.

WP got three individual wins at the meet: Owen Lanning in the 300 meter hurdles, Travis Crockett in the 200 meters and Emily Adams in the girls' 800 meters.

According to WP Coach Jeff Bartlow, Lanning, a senior, had the top point total for all athletes at the meet, with 31. Besides his 300 meter win, Lanning placed second in the 110 meter hurdles, with a personal record time of 16.72 seconds, and second in the triple jump. He was also fourth in the long jump.

"This is a huge accomplishment with 25 or more teams participating, including Pendleton," Bartlow said. "He joins other Waitsburg and WP athletes (James Thompkins in 2013 and Derek Martin, 2000) that have won the top points in this meet."

Adams, a sophomore, won the girls' 800 meter race in a school record time of 2:29.96, breaking Maya Garcia's 2009 record by more than a second. Adams was also 4th in the 3,000 meter run, 7th in the triple jump and 11th in the 100 meter dash.

"She had a great day, and her 3000 was also a great time for her and tells us what she can do," Bartlow said. "She can drop a decent 100 and run a 3000 all in the same day then go triple jump.  She will have a number of school records before her days are done in Waitsburg."

Travis Crockett, a sophomore from Jubilee Academy, scored an impressive win in the 200 meters, in a personal record time of 24.1 seconds. He was also 5th in the 100 meters, 10th in the high jump and anchored the 7th-place 4x100 relay team.

"What I liked is that he did not allow a poor performance in the high jump define him for the day," Bartlow said of Crockett. "He came back and ran a PR in the 100 and then won the 200 all on the heels of a bad day in the high jump."

Other strong performances by WP athletes Friday included Brandon Penner, who was 4th in the discus, Daelon Davis, 5th in the 400 meters, Tewedros McDowell, 5th in the 800 meters and Landon Callas, 5th in the 300 meter hurdles.

WP's Emily Adams is shown in flight in the long jump competition in Dayton.

In addition, the 4x100 and 4x400 boys relay teams both recorded team best times, placing 7th and 8th, respectively. "We have a shot in both of these races and feel we are coming along fine there as well," said Bartlow.
