Ten Years Ago

March 4, 2004

The Waitsburg Cardinal boys are state- bound for the first time since 1996.

Later this month, Wait-Hi's Knowledge Bowl team will compete in the state meet in Vancouver, Wash. The team includes Emily Hogan, Katie Brodhead, Lindsay Auchter­lonie, Maggie Pietila, Ben Bloor and Brad Green, advisor.

Observing thirty-four years of active volunteer community service, the board of the Waitsburg Ambulance Service held its annual meeting on Thursday, February 26, 2004. Board members include: Jack Otter­son, president; Bill Thompson, vice-presi­dent; Joan Hays, treasurer; Nancy Otterson, secretary; Jack McCaw, Jim Leid, Roger Hevel, Patty Loosmore and Bill Hinchliffe.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

March 2, 1989

Lynn Carpenter, daughter of J. R. and Sandy Carpenter of Waitsburg, was the win­ner of the speaking contest sponsored by the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs, held in Walla Walla last Monday night. Second place went to Beth Norton of Prescott, while Khrista Morgan of Prescott was 1st Alternate and Angela Leonetti, Walla Walla, was second alternate.

Rhonda Halley will compete in the Miss Teen All American Pageant in Everett, Washington, on April 7-9.

Fifty Years Ago

February 28, 1964

Mrs. Aleta Combs, first-grade teacher in Waitsburg for 22 years, will retire from her chosen profession this spring. Her teaching career, which extends over 35 years, began with three years in rural schools, continued with ten and a half years in Huntsville, and was climaxed by 22 years of service here.

The city caucus was held Tuesday eve­ning, Feb. 25 in the Commercial Club rooms at 8:00. The following nominations were made and accepted on the Citizen's Ticket: Albert Land, mayor; Julia Davis, secretary; Roy Reed, Roy Leid, Harold Bloor, Ken Zuger and Ernest Rohde, councilmen. The election will be held on Tuesday, Mar. 10.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

March 3, 1939

Complaint has been made to the City Council that in parts of the town cows are permitted to roam at large.

Miss Laura Land, Billy Payne, Mary Elizabeth Walker and Paul Kruchek received prizes during the games at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Clodius Friday evening.

Miss Florence Rees, English and dramatics teacher at Twin Falls, Idaho, was author and director of a modern version of the Shakespearean play, "As You Like It - On Skiis" Scenes were shifted from the Forest of Arden to Sun Valley and from 1599 to today.

Little Miss Janet Sue Light spent Sun­day night and Monday with her grandmother Light. She will be in Waitsburg a few days this week visiting other relatives and friends.

One Hundred Years Ago

March 6, 1914

The new Masonic Temple of this city was dedicated last Thursday, Feb. 26. J. E. Butler was Worshipful Master as the Blue Lodge convened.

T. V. McKinney has leased from his father, Wm. McKinney, the McKinney farm just below town, and we understand, expects to take personal charge this spring. The con­sideration as given in the lease put on record is $1200 per year.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Neace arrived home Tuesday from their California trip of several months.

Mrs. Laura Bailey of Dayton spent several days this week visiting her son, Dave Bailey and family, and her brother, George Samuels and family.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

March 8, 1889

And now Milton, Oregon, a village not to large as Waitsburg, has incorporated for the purpose of putting in and maintaining a street car line.

Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Richardson arrived home from Michigan last Saturday perfectly delighted to be once more in the very best country on God's green earth.

H. C. Actor of Dixie passed through the city last Saturday on his way home from his ranch. He says wheat is in splendid condi­tion. Similar reports come from all over the country.

Our good friend Joe Denney evidently believes it is not good for a man to live alone for he has taken unto himself a life compan­ion in the person of Miss Ida M. Hawks. May good luck, Happiness and prosperity go hand in hand with them as they journey thru this vale of tears.

Last Monday, Harrison was inaugurated and the heavens wept with joy.

Lawyer S. W. Darling of California who has been visiting Minnick Bros. in Spring Valley, departed last Sunday for his home.
