Ten Years Ago

Mother and daughter, Jackie Penner and Debbie Fortner ended toe 2003 reining circuit, a horse competition scored on arena patterns, with two year-end buckles a piece.

Kennewick Police have arrested two more individuals after serving a search warrant on Feb. 10 in the apartment where numerous allegedly stolen musical instru­ments and other items were found. Last week a Kennewick man was arrested and he has confessed to the January 27 burglary of the Waitsburg Grocery Inc. store in Waitsburg.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

February 16, 1989

Superintendent Ed Larsen will ask for revised cost estimates from a three-year-old architectural study as the Waitsburg School Board decided to go ahead with plans for a bond issue to fund a major building project. And Larsen will investigate the possibility of building a physical education room, attached to the grade school, to eliminate the lost time and added trouble of walking children from classrooms to the gym for P.E.

The Waitsburg Cardinal boys assured themselves of at least a fourth place finish in the Blue Mountain B League with an excit­ing 46-42 win over the DeSales Irish in a subdistrict game played in Clarkston last Sat­urday. Marc Zuger, who did not play against DeSales in the final season loss, proved his value to the Redbirds with high point tally of 17. David Murphy gathered in 14 to add to the total.

Fifty Years Ago

February 14, 1964

Jim Tuttle and Lewis Neace are the two top candidates from Waitsburg participating in the FFA Public Speaking Contest to be held in the Wait-Hi Auditorium this Satur­day, Feb. 15. Speakers from Dayton, Walla Walla, Prescott, Pomeroy, and Waitsburg will compete.

A total of 7,584 students had signed up at Washington State University last Friday at the end of formal registration for the spring semester. Acting Registrar Stan Berry said this was a jump of 620 students, compared to the figure a year ago at this time, 6964.

An explosion of a stoker-operated fur­nace caused extensive damage to the interior of the Waitsburg First Baptist Church Sunday morning, Feb. 9. Bill Towers noticed the smoke pouring from the building and turned in the alarm at 6:45. About 20 men answered the alarm and fought the blaze for nearly two hours.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

February 17, 1939

One of the major feeding projects in Columbia County is conducted by Frank Gerton on his farm between Dayton and Waitsburg. He has 251 head under feed in two lots.

Miss Mary Frances Conover cel­ebrated her fifteenth birthday anniversary on last Thursday evening at her home when her mother entertained a group of her friends at a 6 o'clock dinner. Guests included Maxine Dunn, Helen Lloyd, Patricia Hirsch, Louis Dunn, Bob Perry, Tom Hamby and Roy Leid.

One Hundred Years Ago

February 20, 1914

Mrs. J. C. Arnold and daughter Anna went to Portland the fore part of the week to be present at the wedding of M. E. Arnold, so of Mrs. J. C. Arnold and a Portland girl, which we understand occurred Feb. 17.

Will Vollmer is adding an addition to his kitchen. He will concrete the spring to keep the rats out.

Mrs. J. D. Laidlaw and son Ellis re­turned the latter part of the week from their Eastern trip.

A. G. Loundagin left Tuesday morning for Chesau, Wash., where he will join his brother, J. B. in the development of the Reco mine near that place. He expects to be gone some weeks.

The same old story of fog so thick you could cut it with a knife for the past week and it looks as though it were to be a continued story.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

February 15, 1889

Miss Lettie Crawford leaves today for Lewiston, Idaho, where she goes to take charge of a school. She will be absent four months. Miss Lettie is a most excellent young lady and a splendid teacher. We want the Lewiston folks to treat her well.

Miss Addie Fudge entertained a few of her young friends with luncheon and games at her home Monday evening. Following is a list of those present: Katie Mullinix, Mabel Fuller, Mamie Bosworth, Bertha Johnson, Lillie Houtchens, Nettie Stevens, Amy Wheeler, Anderson Cox, Eph. Smith, Schulyer Arnold, Frank Parton, Homer Arnold, Frank Walden, Emerson Wheeler, Clarence Mason.

Mat McCauley last week sold his ranch to his son James, and will move to near Dayton.
