Driving along Lower Waitsburg road today, I managed to miss a deer, something "Killer," my truck, knows about all too well. "Killer "hasn't gotten the nickname because she's a mild mannered station wagon gone to pick the kids-up from soccer. No, Killer is a bonafide menace to unsuspecting wild life; poor little things. Killer can also be cruel to food. I had a bag of crab apples on the front seat and swerving to avoid the soft eyed Doe, the whole bag of apples flopped onto the floor and rolled out of sight, under the front seat. However, the...

    Pioneer Portraits|Oct 6, 2011

Ten Years Ago October 11, 2001 Long-time Waitsburg Historical Society member Jan Zuger was honored with a bouquet of roses last Monday from the board. Board member Andy Winnett presented the roses to Jan who recently retired from the board. She was a charter member when the group first formed in the 1973 and began restoration of the Bruce Memorial Museum. It seems to be a time of conflicting rights. Letters to the editor refer to the fact that a hunting license is not a license to trespass. Landowners ask that hunters observe property...

DAYTON - A group of four specialists has been selected to help-Dayton's Development Task Force come up with a comprehensive plan for Dayton's Commercial Street corridor from the Touchet River to the Seneca plant. And as local coordinators of the effort, the task force is eager to get input from the public and from historical preservation groups as part of the first phase to shape the future of Dayton's historic corridor, which some say has the "pearls" waiting to be "strung together." On Saturday, I was putting away my garden tools, when up drove my long-time cooking collaborator and friend, Desi Kitchens, arriving from California. Desi is an excellent cook and also a lover of great wine. She and I together remind me of Simca and Julia Child, wandering the Parisian markets searching for the best in food and wine. She had stated in an email that when she arrived, we should go to Jim German's Bar, to Whoop Em Up Café and to Cavu Cellars. At "Whoopee," we ordered a barbecue platter that drooled down our arms in perfect...

  • Waitsburg School District To Restrict Cell Phone Use

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Sep 22, 2011

WAITSBURG - Sometime during the past school year, a student approached Dr. Carol Clarke about an offensive text message the girl received on her cell phone. Clarke asked if the student recognized the number. She did not, so Clarke asked her permission to try the number and when she did, another student answered his phone in class and the mystery was solved. Clarke called in the caller's parents, informed them about the incident and the parents took the phone away. If the Waitsburg School Board adopts a proposed new policy regarding the use of...

Arriving home from a weekend away isn't always so happy. I found my neighbor had lost her beloved "Pearl," The Coon Cat. As the week progressed, I'd hear Sally outside calling randomly for her kitty, her best friend, and it became unnerving, bringing back memories of when my kitty, Shoes The Creek Kitty, disappeared. In the country, you have to realize there are all sorts of predators out and about, and it just might be that the Barn Owl's coo isn't as friendly as we thought! People who don't have pets or know what it is like to lose your best...

  • Fluffy Dogs, Felines & Fun At County Fair

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Sep 15, 2011

DAYTON - Tucked away behind a barn and a race track at the Columbia County Fairgrounds, whiskers, floppy ears and cold noses were making kids and judges smile. Kittens meowed loudly from their cages, not wanting to be at the fair at all, while dogs rolled in the grass, sniffed other dogs and left "presents" for their owners to clean up. Dayton's 121st fair that ran Friday through Sunday incorporated traditional elements like 4-H and FFA kids showing sheep, cows and hogs, a long line at noon Satu...
