  • CORRECTION

    May 3, 2012

In the April 26 edition of the Times, a story about the Waitsburg swimming pool contained incorrect information about how the Dayton city pool is funded. Maintenance and operation of Dayton's pool is funded solely by the city's current expense fund revenues, which includes fees collected for use of the pool. The city of Dayton does not have a parks and recreation district that assists with the funding of the Dayton swimming pool....

  • Can City Pool Be A Money Maker?

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Apr 26, 2012

WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg city pool is a major operation of the city that drains revenue and the city council and mayor want to get some input on how to turn the cash cow into a money maker. Last Wednesday night, City Administrator Randy Hinchliffe provided the council and mayor with a list of proposed ideas on how the city could cut costs for the pool. It currently costs about $20,000 to run the pool during the summers, Hinchliffe said. Local pools in Prescott and Dayton don't have the same cost burdens for their cities because of dedicated...

  • Waitsburg Highlighted In Two Magazines

    The Times|Apr 26, 2012

WAITSBURG - The city of Waitsburg has received some much-deserved attention in Seattle and Sunset magazines this month. In Seattle magazine, Waitsburg is listed as one of the "Small-Town Getaways" in the East. The piece highlights the Waitsburg Cottages, jimgermanbar, Whoopemup Hollow Café, Amo Art, the Seven Porches Guest House and the Coppei Coffee Co. It also suggests visitors travel to nearby Dayton to visit Mace Mead Works and the Monteillet Fromagerie. Small Northwest towns that also made the list are Tieton, Joseph, Ore., and Orondo....

  • Columbia Co. District Court To Get New Digs

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Apr 26, 2012

DAYTON - Columbia County District Court is moving to a new location to gain some much-needed elbow room. Judge Scott Marinella, who presides over district court, said the office will be moving from its current home at the Columbia County Courthouse to the Port of Columbia Offices. The port had a vacant space and district court is preparing to move in soon. "We are still working on a date, but we are hopeful it will be in mid-May or the first of June, dependent upon the work being done in the building," Marinella said. "We outgrew our current...

  • Acoustic Show Will Offer Different Side Of Frog Hollow

    Apr 26, 2012

WAITSBURG - With six musicians and a full-blown "rhythm section" that includes drums and bass, Frog Hollow Band is all set up for big concerts and dances. The acoustic evening planned for Saturday, April 28 at 7 p.m. at Coppei Café is a bit out of the ordinary for the three performing members. But lead singer Nick Berg, guitarist Ty Lane and drummer Brian Richards welcome the chance to play at the smaller venue. "The acoustics are great in the coffee shop," Berg said. "It's a lot more laid back....

  • CROPS

    Gary Hofer, The Times|Apr 26, 2012

The stock market has essentially accomplished nothing in the three months since mid-January. There is plenty of dithering about Spain, followed by Italy, then Portugal and so on. The elected course of response to these serial bailouts by the European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is basically to absorb the debts with international funds, ultimately supported by the U.S. dollar. It is well known that the stock markets require a "wall of worry" to climb, so we have no lack of climbing material. The doomsday commenta...

  • Get Rocked By ‘Tempest’

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Apr 26, 2012

WALLA WALLA - "Dearer action is in virtue than in vengeance." Louisiana actor Johnny Lee Davenport, the spitting image of Samuel Jackson, quotes Shakespeare from "The Tempest," the classic Elizabethan play about betrayal, revenge, love and forgiveness that will open later this week at the Powerhouse Theatre in Walla Walla. Walking into DaMa Wines, Main Street, downtown Walla Walla, owner/winemaker Dawn Kammer works the tasting room. As I explained, I had a glass of the DaMa 2011 Rose at a luncheon earlier in the week and thought it exquisite and it should not be missed by attendees over Spring Release Weekend, May 4-6. About the Wine: This Rose is quite different thatn others recently posted. This may have to do with Kammer's saignee of Syrah; the free run of natural wine grape juices gathered in the vat before first squeeze. However, the wines that accompany...

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Apr 19, 2012

WAITSBURG - The city of Waitsburg transportation benefit tax district was widely approved in the Tuesday night Special Election results. The district's approval will mean a one-tenth of 1 percent sales tax increase for goods purchased within city limits. That money collected will go into a fund to maintain city streets. At a little after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, the results showed 232 voted yes for the district and the tax increase, 75.08 percent, and 77 voted no, 24.92 percent. • Bohleen Found Not Guilty

Imbert Matthee and Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Apr 19, 2012

WALLA WALLA - A jury in Walla Walla late last week cleared an elderly Dayton man who hit and killed a Seattle cyclist last year of vehicular homicide. The not guilty verdict for Melvin Bohleen following his criminal trial in Walla Walla Superior Court Thursday drew praise from his attorney, who said the driver will nonetheless live with his regrets for the rest of his life. Saturday, standing beside local luminaries in the Dumas Station Winery's tasting room, all were fascinated by winemaker Jay Dewitt's newest bottle; Dumas Station 2009 Cabernet Franc, an Estate bottled red wine. About The Wine: Dewitt produced 40 cases of this oaken Cab Franc. At 75 percent cab franc, 13 percent Petit Verdot and 12 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine's backbone is supported by a barrel of spicy tannins. Nose buried deep in the glass, the essence of lipstick rose entices the senses. With first sip, swooshes of mint and wild...

  • Come Join In The Touchet Two-Step!

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Apr 12, 2012

WAITSBURG - - Most Waitsburgers know Mickey Richards as "Izzy's Dad." But what many don't know is that the affable owner of the town's iconic dromedary is as good a dancer as he is a camel handler. If you'd have set foot in Walla Walla's Heath & Co. (now Barnabees) in the 1980s, chances are you'd have seen Richards practice or teach the two-step, waltz, polka or any country dance routine as often as six days a week. "I practically lived there," he said. "It was a bad day when it closed." But...
