The weekend: Shared by friends and family, I rummaged through my wine collection and found a bottle I brought with me from Walla Walla to California. I would be sharing this wine with friends at a BBQ featuring chicken and artichokes! The Wine: Walla Walla, Kontos Cellars 2011 Gossamer White, a $22 bottle of feminine white chardonnay, kissed in 20 percent Roussanne, 17 percent Orange Muscat, 35 percent Viognier and 12 percent chardonnay. Over the weekend, siblings and I celebrated our father's 90th birthday. When I walked into Papa's home he was napping with an "Architectural Digest" sprawled over his chest, eyeglasses still on. "Papa," I whispered, he awoke and smiled and the weekend began. After everyone was accounted for, we caravanned into San Francisco where one sister owns a home across the street from the harbor. This is where we'd all stay for the weekend birthday festivities. In 1941, my father joined the Merchant Marines out of San Francisco and almost got blown out...

In spite of the big, $1 per bushel spike in Chicago wheat prices May 15 through 21, the trend for wheat remains in a broad downward slope. It is very tough for wheat to advance directly into the teeth of harvest, even with the weather stories about dryness in Russia and frost on tender young North Dakota hard red spring wheat. We do not yet have the combination of factors that could allow wheat to rise beyond the upper edge of the 15-monthold downward price channel. The market played one of its best positive price cards in the mid-May jump, as...

The Adventure: I was in Napa Valley this week and although I enjoyed my time away, I looked forward to getting home and kicking off my shoes. When friends arrived to pick me up from the airport, they whisked me off to Mannina Cellars, 760 C. St., Walla Walla, for a tasting of winemaker Don Redman's 2010 Sangiovese red wine. I didn't resist because this winemaker is one of Walla Walla's most gifted. The Winery: Mannina Cellars is owned and operated by Don and Nicole Redman, two people I recommend you get out and meet if you have any doubt about...
