Our Neighboring Countryside: Fall came over the week- end, the sound of leaves being raked was deafening. Maybe you've noticed recently the neighborhood turkey clutch is nowhere in sight. I was told by one old timer that after the turkeys see humans wearing camouflage they high tail it to the Whetstone to hide in their caves. With this thought I get a mental picture: a clutch of modern-day raptors running like the Road Runner with Wylie Coyote wearing camouflage running close behind, "meep-meep!" The Wine: When Master Sommelier, Franco Rossi...

Ten Years Ago September 26, 2002 It was a good summer for Waitsburg Lions Club, with several fundraising projects bolstering the club's bank accounts. The income offset some ex- penses the club paid out for maintenance around the softball fields over the summer. The Walla Walla Fair ice project delivered 45,000 pounds of ice over four days of the fair. Gross revenues for ice sales amounted to $6,925, netting the club $2,359 after the concession permit and ice bill were paid. The Softball Bash was full with 26 teams, and unfortu- nately had to...

Wheat prices along with many other markets this week are waiting for a push from any domi- nant factor that will allow a direction. Chicago wheat managed to gain about 15 cents per bushel since last week at this time, but in this environment that is a mere wiggle. White wheat prices for Portland delivery also gained about 14 cents in the same week with current levels near $8.78 per bushel. Few are willing to take major positions ahead of this Friday's USDA Grain Stocks as of Sept. 1 and Small Grains Summary Reports. The trade, including analyst...

It's hard to miss the giant rolls and bundles of hay dotting the countryside today. For the small rancher, the no. 1 step to success- fully storing hay is to first lay a layer of rock to support the hay weight and help in drainage. Stacking hay bundles into a pyramid helps air flow freely, keeping hay rot at bay. The crush is on! Wineries across the valley are busy with harvest. I stopped at Tertulia Cellars, 1564 Whiteley Road, Walla Walla, to sample a rose wine, so perfect with fall foods. The Wine: Tertulia Cellars 2011 Rose, a luscious...

Ten Years Ago September 19, 2002 Just more than 800 hungry people helped the Waitsburg Commercial Club, in its primary fundraiser of the year, consume about 1, 100 pounds of Copper River salmon at the annual salmon barbecue held Sept. 12 in Waitsburg. Some 805 people paid to get a plate of the succulent seafood dinner, up from 782 in 2001, according to Ivan Keve, one of the chairmen of the event. Keve didn't have all the figures in by press time, but he did know that beverage sales were $170 higher than last year. Patrons of the fall classic...

The trend in wheat has not been positive for nine weeks, although depending on what week you chose, it was either at the high end or the low end of an 88-cent range that was defined right at the beginning of the period since the last two weeks of July, with the upper end around $9.44 and the lower about $8.56. 88 cents per bushel is a lot of money. A single futures contract, or "one-lot", is 5,000 bushels. Around here that might represent all of the production of 45 to 65 acres of good wheat ground. In the Midwest it reaches 100 acres or more....

The weekend brought a surprise; my gardening neighbor and a bag full of Dutch bulbs from her garden. She and I trade seeds and bulbs -- a sustainable practice for gardeners. I have a prolific sunflower and sugar pumpkin patch each year. I move the patch, rotating from one end of the yard to the other, giving the earth a good mulching before each long winter's nap. Last year, my neighbor admired my rows of baby sunflower plants and asked where I had purchased such hardy fall starters. Starters? I had no starters, these plants germinated from...

This just in from the Department of Redundancy Department: The wheat market is in a sideways pattern, with a range of just under 90 cents per bushel in Chicago soft red winter wheat, slightly more for Kansas City hard red winter, $1.23 from high to low in Minneapolis hard red spring wheat. White wheat prices in Portland have swung from about $8.30 to about $9.05, settling early this week at about $8.76, just over the center of the 75-cent high-low range since late July. Global import buyers have been active in the usual Northern hemisphere...

  • New Study By Community Council Starts Sept. 17

    Morgan Smith, The Times|Sep 13, 2012

WAITSBURG - In a rural community, it's easy to feel like helping and making changes for the better are impossible as a single person. The Community Council understands that feeling, which is why they put together a non- profit organization to help people connect to their community. The five-year old organization prides itself on bringing individu- als together to help strengthen communities by focusing on different topics to discuss for lengths of time in order to come up with a way to improve on each issue and you can help them out this...

There are corn shipments from Brazil unloading on the East coast for feeders in the mid-coastal region. The price of corn has arrived at a tipping point that is the market must seek a price for United States corn that does not destroy demand any further than it has already. On the other hand too much relaxation of prices could kick demand up enough to over-run available supplies being harvested now. The price range for corn is thus de- fined loosely between about $8.50 and $7.50 for a while. The recent range for December corn is between $8.49 o...
