Whole food is one of life's greatest pleasures. When we eat whole foods, we are getting the food intact with all of the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that make it a balanced food, rather than the bits and pieces that remain after refinement and processing. If you're trying to eat a healthier diet, relying on whole foods is a great place to start. Instead of an energy bar for breakfast, have a pear and some almonds. The goal is to decrease the amount of processed foods you eat and increase the amount of whole foods. The late harvest fro...
Ten Years Ago August 29, 2002 The Walla Walla Fair will be a Maiden family affair. This year's Queen of the Walla Walla Fair and Frontier Days, Haley Maiden, and the Parade Marshall, County Commissioner Chuck Maiden, are living proof that the roots of the fair family tree go deep. Haley is Chuck's granddaughter, making her a fourth generation Maiden family participant in the fair. Haley's aunt Pam (Maiden) Hannah was a fair queen in 1975, and her aunt Linda (Maiden) Schmidt was the queen in 1985. Chuck served on the fair board for nine years....
The wheat market is hunting for a mandate. The highest price of the summer to date is now well more than a month back, on July 23 for Chicago December futures at $9.47 per bushel, and July 20 for white wheat delivered in Portland at $9.05. This week's Chicago is around 89 cents lower and Portland is down about 42 cents. The chart pattern is a (relatively) slow decline in a 20-25 cent range. It is sometimes useful to look at the wheat market as if it is an independent creature with emotions, motivations and ideas. Right now, the crittur is wan-...

ANIMAL CONTROL CODE WAITSBURG - Last week, the Waitsburg City Council discussed changes to the Animal Control Code. The code is in draft form and suggested updates include turning outstanding fees over to collections. Also, City Administrator Randy Hinchliffe said the Humane Society will now act as animal control within the city. The cost should be similar to what the city paid to have an animal control officer - a position that was eliminated months ago. The council also set fees for nuisance dogs to $100, $200 and $300 per offense, per dog....
The Wine: the incomparable L'Ecole 2011 Chenin Blanc, a white wine, $14 dollars a bottle on the shelf of Walla Walla winery tasting room, 509-525-0940. In the 1970s, West Coast steakhouse bar managers looking for a change switched out their jugs of chenin blanc for the oaken chardonnay by Mondavi. For those who don't like oak, a long-lived Chenin Blanc has far more character than any chardonnay on earth and no oak. The cold fermentation of the L'Ecole Chenin Blanc celebrates orange blossom, star fruit and a crisp mineral finish. Jean Ferguson,...

I t has been a long, hot summer. The wheat markets, led by the corn and soybean markets, have reached extremes not seen since 2008. The world markets are anxious and wary, sitting uncomfort- ably on the bench in a bad neighborhood waiting for the Euro- zone economic bus. Every story about United States corn and soybeans or Russian wheat crop disasters in the mainstream news serves to prevent wheat market participants from assessing price reality in the wheat supply and demand balance point. U.S. spring wheat is 67 percent in the bin for this...
