The Annual Dayton Christmas Kick-Off was a hit. Shop owners report sales were brisk. Ending the downtown winter event was the traditional Christmas float and light show parade on Main Street. This is where everybody in Dayton gets busy applying crazy creative ideas, whimsically displayed to the floats for the public's enjoyment. Gathering from the crowd's laughter and applause, I would say this part of the event is a sure way to bring the town together! At dusk, the event ended with a fireworks display while cafés and bars remained full until...

We may finally be approaching a market consensus that allows a breakout of the more-than-4-monthold trading range for wheat prices. Even though there is a reasonable technical chart-based rational for lower prices, the variety of fundamental factors now emerging in the market's mind is all positive. This week, the USDA released the last crop condition update until spring. The U.S. winter wheat crop condition has continued to deteriorate due to lingering drought. The government reported Monday that only 33 percent of the national winter wheat...

Unanimously, I'll be making this year's Thanksgiving Day turkey gravy, again. The honor inspires me to change things up introducing a little taste of France to the traditional American table. Holding the credential of "Grand Saucier" from Cordon Bleu, France does help a bit in the gravy department. I adore making sauces, chutney and smears of all kinds. For those of you who want to know, I'll be in a Nouville state of mind us- ing a red wine to extend a deeply reduced Cordon Bleu-style turkey gravy. If you want to change things up at your...

Ten Years Ago November 21, 2002 Most of the faculty of Waitsburg Elementary School attended the Waitsburg School District board meeting last week to express concern about staffing levels in the elemen- tary school after a vacancy created by one teacher's resigna- tion was not filled for the 2003-2004 school year. Carolyn Rittenhouse, who last year taught a 2-3 combination, re- signed at the end of last school year to accept a position in another school district. A replacement teacher was not hired following last summer's budgeting process and...

The price of Chicago soft red winter wheat on Tuesday, Nov. 20 was 70 cents below the highest price traded on November (a week ago Friday). The slightly down- ward sloping trading range is unbroken, but is being threat- ened. The current price is a battleground. Buyers that see wheat at the low end of its range about to return to higher lev- els as expectations for increased U.S. exports finally emerge. Sellers see the weak pace of exports to date and importers tak- ing only small amounts from the market at a time along with a potential range-f...

  • Districts Make Changes To School Lunch

    Jillian Beaudry, The Times|Nov 22, 2012

WAITSBURG - At the beginning of this school year, school staff members began hearing complaints that students weren't eat- ing enough to feel full and energized after lunch. Now, some local schools are stepping up to accommodate kids and prevent their tummies from rumbling in fourth period. Susan Wildey, the food services supervisor for the Waitsburg School Dis- trict, said in September the amount of food offered for breakfast and lunch by the district's cafeterias has been reduced this school year. The change in nutritional guidelines for all...

I bundled-up in a down vest and headed to the barn. I was looking for a garden pot I envisioned planting the last of 12 crocus bulbs. Winter has arrived and this will be the last thing I do before the snow falls. These promising bulbs will sit on the outside ledge of my kitchen window while I await spring and their colorful blooms. You may be familiar with Walla Walla's Lodmell Winery, its logo a curled snake honoring the Snake River that meandering through the Lodmell wheat farm and vineyard properties. Recently, I tasted the Lodmell 2008...

On Friday Nov. 9, the Chicago wheat March contract briefly touched $9.29 per bushel. By 11 a.m. the next Tuesday, the same contract was trading actively at $8.59, 70 cents per bushel lower. This little bit of drama came in the face of the low- est overall national winter wheat crop quality rating in the U.S. since records have been kept in 1986, with reports of good-to-excellent wheat condition assessed at just 39 percent last week and anticipated to continue to decline into the winter wheat dormancy season. The 20-year average for this rating...

The 2012 Fall Wine Release held throughout the region this weekend was a huge success. Thousands of people converged in Walla Walla and Columbia counties for this yearly wine event. Wine sales were brisk. One thing remains the same each year: wine enthusiasts standing elbow to elbow, swirling and listening to tasting room managers explaining just why our regional wines are so deli- cious. Saturday's tasting room talks surrounded the recent years' mild winters and wet springs influencing the 2009 to 2012 wines with unusual velocity, deeply hued...
