The ordinance is not designed to ban such operations here but simply to await final state rules and regulations allowing for their establishment following the passage of Initiative 692 making possession of small amounts of pot legal in Washington. The counc...
Ten Years Ago December 19, 2002 A new Historic Resources Coordinating Committee has been formed to provide expertise in reviewing historical brochures, increasing the accessibility of historical resources and helping fill gaps in the history of our area. The committee includes representatives of various local institutions involved in valley history, and is being coordinated by the Walla Walla Valley Chamber of commerce, which took the lead in bringing the group together."We all have been following our passion for history and now we have an...
WALLA WAL- LA - More than once dur- ing her three months at the Walla Walla Regional Fire Academy this fall, Dayton's Heather Truitt's experience was a bit like trying to drink from a fire hydrant. "I thought to myself 'I don't know if I can do this,'" the 22-year-old volunteer fire fighter said. "I didn't realize how much was involved." It was intimidating at first, she said. Not only did she have to "step it up to keep up with the boys" physically, but the "homework" of reading and theory was...
Maple leaves crunch under my feet as I walk to the car. In my mind, I know driving into Walla Walla will be a challenge at Lewis Peak. At this time of year, the peak's nature is to spray frozen rain on the window shield giving each car its own personal white-out, but don't let that stop you, by the time you reach the lower elevation in Dixie, the ice melts and it's "easy peasy" into Walla Walla. I am no different when it comes to holiday food shopping: I hit the sales. This week, I bought what I need to make all my holiday food gifts. Needless...
Ten Years Ago December 12, 2002 T'is the season of giving and the Waitsburg Lions Club is conducting its annual smoked turkey fund raising event. For a modest donation of $25, gift givers have a quick and tasty answer to the question of what to give to their hard-to- give-to friends and relatives, and smoked turkey lovers have a quick, easy and affordable way to get the taste they crave. The Waitsburg Lions seek the public's help with this project, which helps numerous youth-oriented projects and causes in the Waitsburg community. The club's la...
Tuesday morning's USDA monthly reports on supply and demand balance sheets had a surprise for the wheat trade: world wheat stocks were increased by 3.4 million metric tons over last month's reported total. The trade had expected some increase, but the surveyed pre-report guesses from prominent analysts around the country were uniformly too low. Another negative statistic was dumped on the market Tuesday morning in the USDA's reduction of projected US 2012-13 wheat exports by an additional 50 million bushels, the second cut in as many months....

Driving out west on Highway 11 towards Milton- Freewater, just over the Oregon border, on the right hand side of the road sits the log cabin tasting room of Zerba Cellars. This unique winery has obtained a polished wine- maker who makes wine in a versatile and sustainable manner. This is where I begin this week's column, talking about Zebra Cellars 2009 100 percent Estate Late Harvest Semillon wine. When profiling a Semillon white wine, tasting notes are usually met with a toasty palate of just-baked bread. But in the case of the Late Harvest...

People are struggling with decision making in all of the markets as we close in on the end of the year and the end of the Mayan calendar. Outside of those habitual seekers of reasons to "party as if there were no tomorrow," there is little value in all the dire predictions of cataclysm at the winter solstice on Dec. 21. According to a recent web post from a reasonably cred- ible source of information (NASA) in a world awash with nonsense, just as your desk calendar ends on Dec. 31 and world keeps going on, the same goes for the Mayan calendar,...
