MORATORIUM ON POT SHOPS

WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg City Council this Wednesday will vote on an ordinance imposing a one-year moratorium on the establishment of marijuana dispensaries, processing and production facilities in the city pending the implementation of new state rules on such shops.

The ordinance is not designed to ban such operations here but simply to await final state rules and regulations allowing for their establishment following the passage of Initiative 692 making possession of small amounts of pot legal in Washington.

The council will also consider a reduction in hours of dedicated patrol coverage from the Walla Walla County Sher- iff's Office. This should not affect the Sheriff's availability for service calls, but shrink the patrol hours to 30 per week from the current 47.5, a move that would save the city about $45,000 annually.

The adjustment in patrol hours is part of the final city budget review subject to its second and last public hearing on Wednesday.
