  • Dayton Considers Security Cameras

    Dian McClurg, The Times|Dec 23, 2010

DAYTON - Though the old story that teachers have eyes in the back of their heads turns out to be untrue, school officials in Dayton hope to keep a watchful "eye" on certain high-risk areas on school grounds with a new security camera system. "I hate security cameras," said Superintendent Doug Johnson. "But I'd rather make a couple thousand dollar investment in cameras than keep spending money on clean up." Vandalism at the Dayton School District has grown more frustrating over the last 18 months to two years, Johnson said. This year the distric...

The first winter snow recedes, and what do we find? Mushy gardens. So what now, weather person? Maybe more rain, wind, even another good dusting of snow? Are we experiencing global warming or just a mild winter? Even the Farmer's Almanac can't seem to make up its mind. Maybe it's too early to tell. I was home this weekend and pulled a box of bulbs from the basement where I usually store unplanted bulbs from the fall. Because we haven't had but one freeze this winter, I was able to dig in the earth and plant the straggling bulb. Now, I wait for...

Ten Years Ago December 28, 2000 County Road Foreman Jack Otterson retired this week after 30 ½ years of service. Otterson says the 1996 and 1997 area flooding was the "highlight" of his 16 years as road foreman. Although he and his seven-man crew were severely tested when waters raged through Waitsburg, there was a silver lining: County officials teamed with FEMA funding to build a new shop, which affords many efficiencies on higher ground. Scott and Michelle Huxoll of West Third Street were declared winners for the Christmas lighting display...

  • Bluewood Opens With New Perks

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Dec 16, 2010

SKI BLUEWOOD - Joe Amend pulls his visor down over his face, fires up his welding torch and, sparks flying, tools around on the surface of a steel tube in the shop downstairs from the lodge at Ski Bluewood. After a few minutes he calls over Travis Stephenson, the mountain's new general manager, to show him the results. Down the length of the rounded metal he has "written" the letters "B.wood" for Bluewood as though he had a hair to scratch his name in the bark of his favorite tree. The moment...

MORE CHRISTMAS BASKETS WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg Presbyterian Church reported that its seasonal care effort for needy local families produced 28 baskets this year, 10 more than last year. The collaborative program with the Catholic Church of Waitsburg drew more requests for the baskets but also more support, indicating more families appeared to be in need of the baskets, Rev. Brett Moser said. Donors still wishing to help local households in need can do so by donating to the Waitsburg Food Bank. PLAYGROUND GETS BIG GRANT DAYTON - The sponsors...

When long-time cohort Desi Kitchens unexpectedly strolled up nodding her head in agreement about our winter Cabernets, I thought, who better to pal around with during Barrel Tasting Weekend than Desi, who equally loves wine. First Up: Foundry Cellars winemaker Mark Anderson's '03 Cabernet Sauvignon: 89 percent cabernet, 20 percent merlot. This is a Cab created uniquely like the Smithsonian artist that Anderson is; layered in explosive strokes of tannin, brambleberry and "meat-in-a-glass," a profile given two years ago by yours truly. This par...

Ten Years Ago December 21, 2000 Crews of Northwest Grain Growers worked all weekend, 24 hours a day, to empty a grain tank on the northern edge of Waitsburg containing 150,000 bushels of wheat. Employees noticed a recently added skid-steer loader door at the base of the 160,000-bushel steel tank had failed posing an immediate hazard to employees, passersby and the elevator facility. Twenty-Five Years Ago December 5, 1985 Waitsburg Commercial Club made plans for the first Hometown Christmas on Friday and Saturday, December 9 and 10. The...

  • Dixie Gets New Cell Phone Tower

    Imbert Matthee, The Times|Dec 9, 2010

DIXIE - No one seems to know exactly how tall the Northwest Grain Growers elevator in Dixie is, but even those who work there say it's no higher than 130 feet. That means the small town's tallest item, which is visible from Highway 12 tucked back in the fields south of its outskirts, will soon be eclipsed by an even loftier structure. Inland Cellular is set to build a 180-foot cell phone tower at 9970 East Highway 12 near the elevator this spring and is seeking public comment on its proposal under the National Preservation Act of 1966. Local...

Recently, someone asked me about the validity of California Cuisine in today's restaurant market. I was surprised by this question because without California Cuisine, we'd still be eating canned foods, meat and vegetables dusted in DDT. In fact, the way we think about and eat food today is based entirely on the fresh food movement of the 1970s and '80s known as California Cuisine. Think about it. Without the early integrated food movement, we wouldn't see regional, fresh vegetables listed on our menus today, including baby carrots, mixed l...

Ten Years Ago December 14, 2000 The proposed tower on Buttercup Hill has been the talk of the town. According to the Waitsburg Planning Commission, the 250-foot tower on 300-foot Buttercup Hill, "would be the single most visible feature throughout the city and all approaches to the City." A public hearing to gather comments has been postponed pending the gathering of more information. A nine-month fundraising project was realized this week when crews from Gillespie Roofing replaced the decades-old asphalt and tar roof with a high-tech r...

  • Hometown Christmas

    Rosindee Thompson, The Times|Dec 2, 2010

"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go." Do you know what that means? Christmas is right around the corner and Waitsburg's 25th annual Hometown Christmas is just down the road. Mark your calendars for Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4-5. You may have heard through the grapevine that this year's cherished event will be held back in Ye Towne Hall in downtown Waitsburg. Last year, during renovation, the event was moved to the elementary school. But its back this weekend in its original location downtown, confirmed Ruth Pe...
