WAITSBURG - Jake Winona is in his 14th year coaching youth wrestlers in the Mat Bird program in Waitsburg. This season, Winona welcomed 34 wrestlers; 22 of those are returning from last season. Winona has built a strong program and will be assisted this season by Charlie Barron, Caleb Barron, Rob Parrish, Steve Mertens, and Curtis Winona. WAITSBURG-The Matbirds Calvin James and Charlie Reger each placed first in their first time wrestling at the first wrestling tournament of the season on March 11. On March 18 the Matbirds traveled to the Ritzville tournament. Highlights were Jess Winona placing 1st winning two out of three matches by fall. Twelve Matbird wrestlers received medals at the Colfax Little Guy Tournament on Saturday, March 12. Wrestlers were placed into brackets based on age and weight. First place finishers were Parker Winona in the 7/8 age group and Carter Barron in the 9/10 age group.
