* It was 17th-century English novelist and politician Edward Bulwer-Lytton who made the following sage observation: “If you wish to be loved, show more of your faults than your virtues.” * If you have an indoor/outdoor cat, you might have found yourself wondering why it sometimes shows up on your doorstep with an offering of a dead animal. Well, there’s actually a good reason for it. It seems that the cats most likely to present owners with a gory gift are spayed females, and they’re acting out behaviors seen in the wild. Feral cats teach t...

One of my many downfalls is cinnamon anything, but cinnamon rolls are on the top of that list. I prefer mine to be a sweet roll with plenty of cinnamon and no frosting, please. When I saw this recipe I thought, if it has buttermilk as an ingredient then it has to be a light, not heavy, dough, and I was right. It also used brown sugar which I had not used before. I thought I'd give it a try. And thankfully, I have a handy taster, Joe. When he went for his third roll, I knew they were a success....

Correction: The Times had a little trouble with married names vs. maiden names last week. Dayton Ag teacher Kristina Knebel was listed as Kristina Peterchik and Prescott pool manager Yvonne Jackson was listed as Yvonne Gibbons. We’ve also been informed that Dayton senior princess Melody Reeves and prince Hayden Wooldridge weren’t named in the caption on last week’s homecoming court photo. Please accept our apologies....
It was almost exactly a year ago I shared this recipe so if it sounds like a repeat, it is. It is a good recipe for this time of year because squash and apples are fall items so I thought I'd repeat it. INGREDIENTS: 2 acorn squash-halved and seeded 4 oz mushrooms, chopped 1 TBSP butter, melted 2 apples, cored and chopped ¼ tsp garlic salt 1 c. fine breadcrumbs ¼ tsp sage ½ tsp sage 1 lb. pork sausage (regular seasoning) salt and pepper ½ c. onion 1 egg beaten 1 celery rib, finely chopped 2 Tbsp. fresh parsley,...
Ten Years Ago November 1, 2007 It has come to our attention that we do not have any birthdays listed for October 28. We are hoping to find someone with a birthday on that day. For the first person that calls The Times office, 337-6631, with a name to put on our birthday list for October 28, we will provide a cake mix, frosting and birthday candles. Towne Hall will be the beneficiary of funds raised by the Waitsburg Commercial Club at the 50th Salmon Barbeque in September. At a recent board meeting, Club leaders approved submitting up to $5,000...

First, before I start, I need to correct last week's pumpkin cookie recipe. I hope anyone who made it realized it had an error. I received a call from a lady who questioned whether 2/3 cup of flour was correct. Most of us who bake knows that didn't make sense so rather than ruining a batch of cookies, she checked. Since I was not at home, I asked her to Google it on Allrecipes.com. Sure enough, she found it and it should have been 2 ½ cups flour. I apologize and my only excuse it my head was not where it should have been. I wanted to...
* It was 20th-century American author and college professor David Foster Wallace who made the following sage observation: “There is no such thing as not voting: you either vote by voting, or you vote by staying home and tacitly doubling the value of some diehard’s vote.” * Those who study such things say that many ancient Greeks carried coins in their mouths -- clothing of the time lacked pockets, you see. * In late 19-century America, parts of New England had a rather unusual Halloween tradition. Evidently, in many rural communities, boys...

* It was German dramatist, poet, philosopher and statesman Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who made the following sage observation: “Too many parents make life hard for their children by trying, too zealously, to make it easy for them.” * At one time in Ireland, a traditional Halloween activity was predicting future romance. It was one of the few times of the year when young men and women could mingle, and fortune-telling games to predict who they would marry were popular. * Those who are experiencing money-related relationship issues might be int...
The recipe for this week has changed a few times. I was going to put in a recipe for roasted vegetables with rice and bulgur wheat. It has an interesting blend of spices, but I didn't get it made. I want to try it first to make sure it tastes as good as it sounds. Actually the recipe comes from the Union Bulletin. The other recipe is a sausage and barley soup. It looked to be straightforward, but when I saw the cookie recipe, I knew it would be the one. I haven't made pumpkin cookies for quite a while . INGREDIENTS: 2/3 c. all-purpose flour 1 &...
